Are you new to the City of Alexandria? Did your street lose trees during the August 5th storm? Do you just want more trees on your block? The you need to meet John Noelle. John is the arborist for the City of Alexandria and is in charge of planting trees throughout the city. Of course he's responsible for a lot more than just planting trees but it's a good place to start. We met John last night at a gathering of neighbors in Del Ray. Fox Vernon, neighbor, musician and blogger, organized the meeting and arranged for John to

city of alexandria: Tree Damage - Who Pays? - 08/07/10 01:18 PM
With the number of trees down in Alexandria from the massive thunder storm that swept through on Thursday, it's worth asking - who pays for tree damage? Essentially, it's going to depend on how the insurance policies read and what a claims adjuster decides. If the tree was already dead or diseased - and if you had already brought it to the attention of your neighbor - then it's your neighbor's insurance that will end up paying. (This is when pictures and documented evidence come in handy.) If it was a healthy tree and just knocked down by a storm, (an

The City is temporarily relaxing some of its normal requirements for removal of tree debris on private property. Residents removing tree debris on their property should place tree limbs and debris at the curb, and if possible, cut them down to pieces that you, as a homeowner, can safely take to the curb for collection.

city of alexandria: City of Alexandria Announces Parking Meter Increases - 06/25/10 07:18 PM
The City of Alexandria has announced parking meter increases that will take the hourly rate from $1.00 to $1.75. That's a lot of quarters folks! If it's any consolation, meters in the District of Columbia are $2 an hour. The parking meter increase is just part of an overall increase in several departments in response to the City's current economic challenges and the increased cost of providing services to residents and the public. Other increases include: A $5 fee increase for City trash and recycling collection for residents who receive these services, for the acquisition of new and improved

city of alexandria: When is the City of Alexandria Liable? Part Two - 09/19/09 05:02 PM
As you can imagine, the thread on our neighborhood listserv regarding what and when the City of Alexandria is liable for homeowner damages was quite lively. The general consensus seems to be that the first response of the city is NO but that patience and persistence often win out. One neighbor wrote (I paraphrase): about four years ago, the city allowed a private contractor to bore holes underneath the sidewalks to lay fiber optic cable. In the process, they broke 80 yr. old clay sewer pipes that worked great. The damage resulted in sewage backing up to my house and causing
