I happen to have an amazing lab mix, full of personality and apparently, bored as of late. I had a weekend full of activities and a few late nights (interrupted by bathroom and feed breaks for her) and Liberty Belle, the wonder pooch, got creative.

I walked in late Saturday evening to find shredded garbage from one end of the living room to the other and a black dog that knew nothing on the subject, naturally. I clean it up, we head to bed.

First thing in the am, she’s swinging from chandeliers like she’s been living on pixie sticks for the last week. I head to the kitchen to make myself some be-nice-juice and find she has devoured the contents of a picnic basket I won earlier in the week. Contents of her stomach included (mind you also Saturday night dinner and Sunday am feeding to boot): a bag of cheese its, two travel containers of pringles (both original and sour cream), two packs of lance crackers (one cheese, one wheat, both with peanut butter of course), a chocolate pudding cup, a pack of oreos, half a pack of trident gum (to freshen up) and three travel tubes of crystal light (the size you add to a water bottle) to wash things down.

When I got back at lunch she was in a hurt locker. I’ll spare you the details but I do have an antique silk rug that could use a little professional tlc as Libbys impersonation of a Sick Puppy and mine as a professional carpet sweeper were not the costumes I had in mind this year.

By dinner, it was time to call the vet. The good doc was impressed with the sheer VOLUME of what she ate and was less concerned about the chocolate intake considering how many other starches were mixed in and hopefully absorbing/preventing damage. Not reassuring enough.

I tried a few of the suggestions but found swapping the mashed taters for grits an easy enough swap that made the patient happy and kept me from running out to the store. In the am, the vet also offered a trick, full fat vanilla iced cream, apparently coats their tummies like pepto does for us. Good old fashioned napping also helped her turn the corner but there was no avoiding her being miserable for a few days.

Environmental Elf Program

Please pass this message to other teachers, students, and parents.

We need high school volunteers for the Jacksonville Litter Free Holiday Parade / Environmental Elf Program.

Those that are interested should meet at the parking lot on the right side of the Coastal Carolina Community College science building (look for Environmental Elves sign) at:

no later than 8am on Saturday the 19^th of November.

You can also preregister by emailing Lisa_Rider@onslowcountync.gov . Environmental Elves program helps high school students earn SAT credit hours by walking in the parade collecting recyclables and trash from parade watchers. Hats, bags, etc will be provided and the first two volunteers to show up will have the option to hold the banner.

The parade starts at 9am and traffic will be blocked, so you need to make arrangements to have students dropped at the parking lot at CCCC by 8am and meet them at the end of the parade (Brynn Mar Shopping Center). The parade ends at noon and the walk takes about 30 minutes from start to finish. (Elves will be located all throughout the parade so some will finish earlier than others.)

It is best for parents to be at the end of the parade by 9am. Parents can also walk in the parade with students if they choice to. Please bring SAT credit hour forms in order to receive credits. YOU MUST BE AT THE PARKING LOT BY 8am at the LATEST in order to participate in the parade and receive credit!!!

“Good Day Everyone,

Attempting to keep everyone in the communication loop, I wanted to provide you with a quick update regarding bringing pets to Okinawa. In the past, we advocated against this since not all housing was considered pet friendly. Since that time, we got a new housing chief and as a result all military family housing is now pet friendly. Within the towers specifically, cats are allowed on all floors and dogs are limited to the first two floors.

Also, in the past, people left their pets behind per the suggestion only to be penalized once they arrived with being assigned a non-pet friendly house based on the fact they did not bring their pets. Again, this will not likely occur now since all military family housing is pet friendly. However, considering all of this, we are now not suggesting or advertising that people leave their pets behind. If people have more questions regarding this issue, please refer them to our housing office or to us for further clarification.

She’s bubbly, approachable, fun, can make it all make sense. . .and, possibly even more importantly, cool. My mother has been a coupon nut for years. There have literally been calls from Walgreens to squeal about free mascara or a shopping bag of shampoo and conditioner that only set her back three dollars. For her, it’s the thrill of the hunt and what Collin calls “coupon stacking.”

Depending on which study your favorite trusty search engine pulls up for you, the average “couponer” can save an average of twenty-five dollars a week, about a hundred a month. . .which, at year’s end of course adds up! I think some of Collin’s tactics will have you even more back in black. Give it a whirl, the worst you can do is save money in the process! The North Carolina Symphony performance last night was wonderful. Gathered with a group of friends, we camped out on a front porch, enjoyed the tunes and catching up. Gardenia scented air, rocking chairs, moss draped trees, a glass of wine and world class performers. . .a tough night to beat!

So, it should come as no surprise to most of you that I’m a dabbler, with a few projects spinning like plates on a stick at a county fair at any given point in time. Looks like one that I’m super excited about is pressing forward and might actually move from pipe dream to an actual “thing.” I’ve been a good chickadee and did my due diligence and leg work on the how and what and why but I be needing some WHO.

ONE of the reasons I’ve been working myself out for months is because of this one special project. . .Sooo if you know of anyone in the “biz” I’d love to exchange info with you. Before you ask, yes, yes, I’m working with the writer’s vault and both email and snail mailing myself copies of things and following the fun “intellectual property” guidelines to CmyA.

I’m headed out of the office for the day, finally, and to get a run in. Mom, if you read this, I’m going for a meandering walk around the neighborhood then icing my stress fracture down and generally taking it easy. I swear. Everyone else, wave if you see me out and about. Honking not encouraged since A. generally the music is too loud 2. I do lots of thinking and a blonde, running on the side of the road does not need her thought process interrupted and III. well, can’t think of a third but let’s just not and say we did

A few weeks back, I think on the last really cool and windy day of spring, I donated blood for the first time in forever. Royce, a colleague at my office suggested it and as a father of two grown kids, knew exactly how to rope me in. ”Want to give blood today?” “I’m in the middle of herding some cats, when?” “Right now, I have an appointment.” “Eek, maybe!” “No, seriously, just hop in the car, I’ll drive.” So off I run out the front door, jacketless, to be the first donor of the day, with excellent blood flow no less (yes, I’m that competitive). I close the car door, he locks it and off we went but I have to admit I felt like a dog being tricked into a vet visit with a promise of a cookie and a drive around the neighborhood. Anyhoo, good deed done and yesterday, a shiny new official donor card showed up in the mail with a thank you note and a suggestion of when and where I could donate next.

I’m often asked by prospective and current clients about the success rate of open houses. Do they work? In my experience, yes and no. I have found that Agent/Broker Open houses have the best track record. I can’t tell you the number of neighborhood open houses I have hosted over the years with ads in the paper, online, various social media outlets and signs everywhere to have only the next door neighbors show up to talk about the kitchen drapes. Granted, it only takes that ONE buyer to get your home sold but low attendance isn’t going to get you there. My goal is of course to keep my clients happy but happy means a sold home. The more prospective buyers your home can be exposed to, the better.

A Broker open can do just that. On average, a broker is communicating with five to eight buyers, we call it incubating, several times a week touching base on what the current market conditions are, what might be new on the market or what on their top ten list may have sold. . .and what new gems we may have previewed that week. So, on a quiet Tuesday afternoon, a broker open with fifteen to twenty in attendance possibly means your home was exposed to 75-160 prospective buyers.

A caravan is a great and super fast way to preview homes, it’s sort of like speed dating. My firm and a few other Century 21 offices in the area gather every Tuesday morning after our sales meetings to tour our new listings in a portion of the county. There’s only so much time in a day, so, we limit the number of homes to about fourteen. It’s a great way for new agents to learn the area and for every agent in attendance to have some great homes brought to their attention.

Both events of course get traffic through your home, but possibly even more important is the feedback the agents provide. Is the home clean enough? Are the paint colors too much? Is the home over priced? Are there any offensive odors? Is the home too overstuffed for it to show well? Are there better ways to arrange the furniture to show off the floor plan?

I’m hitting a few open houses again today. Which inspires me to forward things on to specific clients as well as scrub my baseboards. . .nothing like touring several immaculate homes to make you want to race home and get some spring cleaning done around mi casa!

Crack down on fake PCS orders and other news. . .

I’m sure I don’t need to tell you there have been lots of changes in the real estate industry in the last few years. Rumor patrol is part of my job. We had an amazing series of meetings with base officials, state organizations, and peers. The result? A few updates.

-Rumors have swirled for years that E5 and below are required to stay on base. Not the case. No USMC order exists nor is one planned.

-North Carolina has had some changes in the way fees can be assessed and collected for property management and tenants. If you have questions regarding your lease, property manager, your rights as a tenant or owner, feel free to call or email. If you are a tenant and have a dispute with the property management firm or the property owner, do not simply move out of the property and abandon your lease. Consult an attorney or even a competing firm for help on how to constructively sole your problem and keep you out of the court system.

-FALSE PCS ORDERS. Enacted in 2003, the Soldiers and Sailors Relief act (http://usmilitary.about.com/od/sscra/l/blsscra.htm) was drafted to protect Active (and later amended to cover Reservists) Duty Service Members. With a simple thirty notice and a copy of PCS orders(Permanent Change of Station), a service member could break their lease with no penalty. For a variety of reasons: found a home they’d like to buy, tired of the current living arrangements, divorce, etc. there has been a rise in folks drafting FALSE PCS ORDERS to help them break leases or terminate a real estate transaction, abusing the Soldiers and Sailors Relief Act and creating financial turmoil for innocent builders, property owners and managers. In the instance of the USMC, there has and will continue to be a crack down. My firm verifies each and every copy of PCS orders breaking a lease or a contract by contacting the Command which has had mixed results. In several instances the result was the active duty member being booted from their respective service. If you’re reading this thinking about falsifying pcs orders, there are other, legal options (ask me if you have questions, regardless of where you’re located). From this week forward, there will be a point of contact (POC) at Camp Lejeune who will research each and every inquiry and report back directly. Don’t be that guy that gets caught.

Wanna celebrate with me? Our annual convention (both National and International) offices was hosted by Las Vegas this year and as a special treat from our ninja marketing department, they managed to turn one of our evenings together into a very special Cake Boss episode. . .resulting in one of the largest cakes I have ever seen.

So, on June 6th 9pm est our very special Century 21 Cake Boss episode will debut. Please check it out! On June 5, 2011 at 7:30 the North Carolina Symphony will perform Around the World in Eighty Minutes. Sponsored by Marine Federal Credit Union, Mine Safety Appliances and Onslow County Tourism.

“Music Director Grant Llewellyn takes you on a whirlwind journey across the globe with musical gems from the U.K., Austria, Italy, Russia, the Far East and, of course, our own United States. Helping us along the way is one of our favorite collaborators, Rhiannon Giddens Laffan, lead singer of the 2011 Carolina Chocolate Drops.”

The County has been trying to attract some great events and performers, please show some support, I’d love to see this event have a tremendous turn out. The park is beautiful and I’m sure it will be a fantastic night, care to join me?
