For 20 years, the tradition of lighting 2,000 holiday luminarias throughout Fountain Hills has attracted thousands of visitors and has seen few changes until now. Chandler Museum presents... A slice of the Old West Lifestyle along with the Old Fashioned Culinary Competition is expected to draw wagon teams from across the western United States. Competitors will prepare their foods from their authentic chuck wagons and use cooking methods and utensils in the style of those used in 1880s cattle drives. Meals will be available to purchase, and the event will also feature stage entertainment, family activities and shopping opportunities. Just a little history...everyone loves history! :) "Mighty Mud Mania" began in 1976 as the "Shout It Out Decathlon," a promotional gimmick for Johnson's Wax "Shout" Spray pre-wash. The activity was held in Chaparral Park in Scottsdale and the Johnson's Wax Company provided 300 white t-shirts for the participants. Johnson's dropped the program because our Arizona mud was too tough for the pre-wash. However, the City of Scottsdale felt the activity was so successful, that our Parks and Recreation Division incorporated the event into the summer recreation program. Re-named "Mighty Mud

Today's history lesson... On May 5, 1862, 4,000 Mexican soldiers held off 8,000 French and allied troops bent on reestablishing their presence in the New World. Recognition of the Mexican victory is widely celebrated in the United States. In Chandler, the celebration is highlighted with the famous Chihuahua Races and the crowning of the King and Queen of Chihuahuas. This weekend is the annual Cinco de Mayo Celebration honoring the Hispanic community and their contributions to the City of Chandler. October is fire prevention month...Chandler Fire and the National Fire Prevention Association want to remind you to "Prevent Home fires." This I did not know...we were gone over the weekend and yep, you guessed it, one of our fire alarms was going to town...it was time to change the batteries. For all those out there that do not know that school schedules, Chandler has been on Fall break for the past 2 1/2 weeks. With 2 kids home and as they say, "We're totally BORED!" You have to think of fun stuff to do around town...yep you quessed it the Zoo! The weather is now at it's best and the animals are out and about. I was on my son's schools web-site Ryan Elementary looking at the October calendar for the kids. I found this interesting and yet every year we plan to attend and then something happens and we do not attend...unfortunately.
