Having lived in Michigan for well over twelve years now, and traveling around as a Realtor even on heavy snow days, here are a few tips to stay safe this winter: 1) Don't be in a hurry. Whenever you have to go somewhere snow is the order of the day, factor in added time for travel. For example, I just made a drive this morning to Charlotte, Michigan from Battle Creek. I thought I would write this blog post on the subject of fire, and how dangerous is can be. Fire can consume a home in less time than you realize, and it can quickly get out of control. I attended a fire safety class last year and learned that a home can be completely destroyed within 20 to 30 minutes of the initial fire starting. My wife and I have lived in Michigan for over a decade, and have been caught on the road in many a blizzard and bad weather conditions. Having to live in this environment you learn a special kind of patience and skill in winter driving that is just not taught in driving school. It is hard to explain, but it is more that just defensive driving. Getting back to normal is sometimes as uphill battle after a destructive natural disaster. Recently this past weekend, the Battle Creek area experienced a severe high wind storm bordering on tornados that wiped out thousands of trees across the area, knocking out power to over 27,000 residents. Today power was finally restored at my Realty office of Troxel Realty, but so many other places around town are not so fortunate. It may be Friday before power is fully restored to the entire city.
