sports: Lessons from the Super Bowl - 02/03/14 12:33 AM
In the wake of the Super Bowl where the Seattle Seahawks defeated Denver Broncos 43-8, there are some interesting lessons one can learn by examining what happened.  Many watchers of the big game were perhaps in shock to see Peyton Manning and the Broncos perform so poorly and be beaten so resoundingly.  What happened?
The best summary of this game would be to say it was the change of times and playing style that created the outcome.
The playing style of the traditional quarterbacks in the NFL were to remain in the pocket, and although they would move around and … (68 comments)

sports: Championship Football Day in America - 01/20/13 12:02 AM
Today the NFC Championship and the AFC Championship games in the National Football League will be played.  The winners of each will go onto the Super Bowl in New Orleans on February 3rd.  The Atlanta Falcons will host the San Franscisco 49ers in the NFC Championship, and both teams are coming to the game on great momentum.  In the AFC Championship the New England Patriots will host the Baltimore Ravens, a rematch from last years AFC Championship.
This time of year is exciting as a football fan.  The games are great, and competitive for the most part.  Quite often they are … (6 comments)

sports: NFL Football On Sunday - 11/18/12 12:15 AM
I have never been able to get into the spirit of College football. Many of my friends do.  Perhaps it is because I have lived in so many areas of the country, that I never embraced any one school.  Or perhaps again, it is because I never attended a school that had a football team, much less a tradition.
However, I have all my life been a lover of the NFL.  I growing up in Arizona when the State had no NFL football team, wishing for a chance to go to a live game.  I was a follower of the Redskins … (3 comments)

sports: Baseball Is Here Again. A Reflection on the Game I Love. - 04/16/12 11:10 PM
One of the things that is the greatest reminder of Spring for me is baseball.  I love following baseball in my daily work.  I listen to the day games on the radio as I am driving around, or listen to a game playing softly in the background as I work.  The Detroit Tigers are my team for my area, and I mostly follow them.  However my pashion is for the sport itself, so I admire all the greats from many teams that play the game.
When I lived in Atlanta for many years I followed the Braves.  Some of my all … (2 comments)

sports: Tebow-Mania evolves to become 'Tebowie' - 01/14/12 03:15 AM
If you are a football fan of the NFL, you have probably have at least heard of Tebow-mania.  For those of you who do not know, Tim Tebow is the Denver Broncos Quarterback who has made his religious beliefs take center stage in all of his public media exposure on and off the field.  There is an old Southern saying that there are two things you do not discuss at the dinner table "Politics and Religion" as you will never get agreement, and everyone will leave with indigestion.
One could say the same with sports.  It is one thing to look … (6 comments)

sports: The Struggle With Open Houses Vs Sports - 10/17/11 04:05 AM
My struggle with open houses is an ongoing thing.  I ask myself at times, do they work at all?  Sometimes it seems like good exposure, but in all my years in Real Estate I have seen very few offers come from hosting an open house, unless it is a very special house like a reasonably priced lakefront property.

Usually I find people attending open houses are either ‘Look-ee-loo’s’ or are the ones needing to sell their home before they can buy one.  Then of course there are the ones looking who have no prayer of ever buying because their … (5 comments)

sports: NFL Off Season Compressed to a Few Short Exciting Weeks - 07/27/11 02:39 AM
With the labor negotiations for the NFL finally over, every team is now circling the wagons and taking advantage of what is left of the normal several month long off season.  Players on waivers are being released tomorrow, and already teams with salary cap room are feasting on the free agent market filling holes where talent is needed.
However, I think we will see most of the exciting moves between Thursday and Monday of this coming week as the teams all scramble for lost time.
Negotiations that normally would drag out for weeks and months are being condensed down to … (4 comments)

sports: Moe Skeeter - Battle Creek, Michigan - 06/28/11 02:12 AM
Part of the fun of going to a Battle Creek Bombers Baseball game is seeing the mascot 'Moe Skeeter' throughout the game.  He appeals to the kids, and is a good entertainer for the crowds.
The 'Bombers' logo is a mosquito, and when I first learned of that I thought to myself "C'mon, couldn't we get a better mascot?"
However, over the years, I have watched people respond to this, and Moe Skeeter has become an endearing part of the culture of Battle Creek, Michigan.
Moe Skeeter over the years has grown in popularity.  I finally got my wife interested in … (0 comments)

sports: An Evening with the Bombers - Battle Creek, Michigan - 06/25/11 03:46 AM
Last night I went to a Battle Creek Bombers baseball game at C.O. Brown Stadium.  The Bombers are part of the Northwoods League, which consists of 16 teams spanning mostly the East Coast and northwest United States.
They are not an official minor league organization connected with MLB, but a independent league.  The players are college students who are playing the summer in the league befoe going back to their college leagues later in the year.  They are not paid, which preserves their NCAA standing.
The Northwoods League was founded in 1994 by a group of businessmen who wanted to bring baseball … (5 comments)

sports: Softball and Baseball Games at Piper Park in Battle Creek, Michigan - 05/07/11 10:14 AM
I live across from Piper Park in Battle Creek, Michigan.  It has its benefits, as it is a wonderfully kept city park here in Battle Creek.  In the park during the warmer months, there are frequent baseball and softball games.
In the last few weeks, I have observed a lot of teams showing up and using the field for practice.  In short order games will start to be held, but right now it seems mainly to be a time of year for working the kinks out of your batting swing, and loosing up the old throwing arm.
People of all ages … (0 comments)

sports: Kalamazoo Wings Hockey is great local fun! - 02/27/11 01:08 PM
I recently attended my first Kalamazoo Wings Hockey game at Wings Stadium.  Being a fan of active team sports, and enjoying making a good video now and then, I took my camera with me to the game and put together a video which you can see below.
The Kalamazoo Wings (known locally as the K-Wings) are members of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL), an AA league which was founded in 1988-89 with originally just four teams.  Today the ECHL has grown to 19 teams all over the U.S. and each have a 72 game schedule.  So it is very easy … (0 comments)

sports: Living Vicariously Through Those Who Play the Big Game on Super Bowl Sunday... - 02/06/11 04:25 AM
Well it is Super Bowl Sunday today, and the whole country as well as many other places in the world will be watching the big game.  Fans of the given teams will be sporting their pride, and prepping for the big day.
If you are a Steelers fan, you will be waving your towel, and if you are a Packers fan you will be sporting your cheese head gear.  What perhaps makes this Super Bowl unique is that the two teams that will meet come to the table with a huge legacy of tradition, more so than any other teams in … (2 comments)

sports: Battle Creek Revolution Hockey - 01/30/11 12:32 PM
The Battle Creek Revolution hockey team offers some exciting entertainment for an evening, if you enjoy watching fast action sports.  They play in downtown at the ice rink, also known as ‘Revolution Arena'.  They draw a regular following of fans from around the area, and one learns that if you are going to go that you arrive early to enjoy the pre-game warm-up.
The Battle Creek Revolution hockey team is part of the All-American Hockey League, which is single ‘A' professional hockey.  The league is a small one, consisting of a total of six teams right now.  The Battle Creek Revolution's … (2 comments)
