The Importance of Walking - 12/30/09 10:54 AM
One of the number 1 New Year Resolutions, next to losing weight, is getting fit.  Walking is great way to do this. Lisa VonBargen, my friend in Estes Park, has a great post today about a wonderful place to take a walk in Colorado.
Yesterday, one of my friends sent me an email about the Importance of Walking, filled with excellent information about the subject.  I thought I'd pass along my favorites to you from the email:

Rural Lifestyle -Growing Trend - 12/28/09 11:43 AM
The Wall Street Journal ran an article on December 3rd entitled "Green Acres is the Place to Be" featuring United Country Real Estate, several of their offices and buyers.

The article's main focus was on the growing trend of young families and singles moving to non-urban areas.

This growing trend is seen in the number of new visitors to United Country's Website as indicated by a 49 percent increase in November of 2009 from November of 2008!

The Wall Street article sited 3 distinct types of buyers of rural properties:
(1) Younger people buying land as an investment, in … (33 comments)

Shift: Tactic #7 Pricing Ahead of the Market - 12/26/09 05:51 PM
In March, I listed a home for $219K, the price was good for the market and there was quite a bit of interest.
40 days after the listing, the sellers changed their mind and decided they didn't want to sell.
As luck would have it, six months later, they got a job transfer and needed to sell.
We knew that most homes in the area sold for an average of 95% of the list price and the second time around, they decided to price it at $210K.
We were under contract in 2 days!

Just read it! Doggone it, I know it's boring - but it's important. - 12/18/09 10:44 AM
I've never heard of anyone saying ,
"I'm going to go home and snuggle by the fire and read a good insurance policy"!
Many people don't understand Title Insurance; almost everyone in the Real Estate Industry would say it's important.......and it's boring.
It's true! I've seen people nearly fall asleep in a Title Insurance class more than once!
It's just about as uninteresting as watching paint dry or reading any insurance policy, however, I cannot stress enough the importance of READING the Title Commitment (or Preliminary Report) nevertheless.
When I reviewed the last title commitment I received, I found the buyer's name … (56 comments)

Get Your Ducks in a Row - 12/15/09 09:26 PM

On a chilly day last October, I stopped by Erie Lake in search of a mama moose and her twins but all I saw were ducks.

After reading a great article the other day about "getting your ducks in a row", I wanted to use that line together with my duck photos from Erie Lake. The more I wrote about "getting your ducks in row to buy a Colorado Mountain Cabin" the sillier "get your ducks in a row" started to sound!

Getting your ducks in row means getting organized, but where did the saying come from?

Holiday Sweets and the Spirits - 12/12/09 01:54 PM
Like you, I get a lot of catalogs and flyers in the mail this time of year.  Mostly more stuff for the recycle bin, but once in awhile there's something of interest, like:
Wilbur's Total Beverage Drinks- the Magazine of Fine Wine Spirits and Living
If you're "wine challeged" like me, you might be surprised to know that when serving wine with desserts the wine should always be sweeter than the dessert.
Personally, I believe I dislike sweet wine and usually vote for coffee, which keeps me up all hours of the night, thinking I should have opted for the wine!
When in doubt, the go-to wine is … (46 comments)

It's Nine Below Zero in Glacier View Meadows Subdivision - 12/08/09 08:22 PM
It's Nine Below Zero in Glacier View Meadows Subdivision
The temperature is 9 below zero on this cold December evening.  I'm thinking about the Battersons, a pioneer family in this area, and the hardship, loss and success they found here.  I pass the Batterson Barn and the little grave, one on each side of the county road, and can only imagine the courage and the mettle they possessed.

In 1873, Solomon and Mary Batterson were heading west to California, along with their 3 children, Billy, Mina, and Azubah Emma.
They drove 2 wagon teams and 8 head of … (60 comments)

Homemade Christmas Memories - 12/07/09 02:24 PM
A Holiday Tradition at our house is the "Annual Gingerbread Man Decorating Contest".

We usually get together the week after Thanksgiving, have a meal and decorate gingerbread men.

Happy and busy children with flour on their faces roll and cut out the dough. The house smells "Christmassy" with the aroma of gingerbread baking in the oven.

We have so much fun, passing sprinkles and icing around the table as well as compliments and giggles.   A few cookies get eaten in the process, but not many.

The voting (by secret ballot) is quite simple; the one with the … (45 comments)
