Memorial Day~How will you celebrate?

Memorial Day, formerly Decoration Day, is a Federally observed holiday in the United States. It is dedicated to soldiers who died for their country! It is always the last Monday, in May…which happens to be May 30th for 2011. It was first started following the American Civil War to honor the Confederate and Union soldiers who gave their lives to fight for freedom and beliefs. It was extended after War World I to honor all American soldiers who have given their lives, in all wars.

It is now not only a day of observance for lost loved ones, but also to mark the start of the summer season. Families celebrate with get-togethers, festivals, shopping, beach trips and racing, like the Coco-Cola 600 scheduled this weekend, at the Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Originally, it was named Decoration Day until 1882. Then, the name change gradually became more common after WWI. However, it wasn’t officially renamed by Federal Law until 1967. In 1968, Congress passed the Uniform Holidays Bill whereby three holidays were moved to a Monday to create a 3-day weekend holiday celebration. The other two holidays were Washington’s Birthday and Veteran’s Day.

There are several traditional observances: The Indianapolis 500 and The Coca-Cola 600 will take place on Sunday. The National Memorial Day Concert will take place on the west lawn of the US Capitol and is being broadcast by PBS and NPR. The most observed tradition is flying the American flag at half-staff, from dawn until noon.

Easy Fish Taco's!

Fish Taco’s

I love Mexican food, but sometimes I get a little bored with the same old fillings. Plus…I am always trying to incorporate more fish into my diet. So, I came up with a quick and easy Fish Taco recipe. I hope you enjoy!

Ingredients:

2-3lbs Boneless White Flaky Fish (I use Swai Fillet)

Taco seasoning packet

1 can of Rotel

Mexican Rice

Corn Salsa

Shredded Lettuce

Sour Cream

Shredded Cheese

Hard or soft Taco shells

Bake the fish until flaky (350 degrees x 20-30 min~approximately). Cook the Mexican rice per package directions. Mix the Taco seasoning packet with the Rotel…don’t add water (like the seasoning packet says). Once the fish is flaky and the rice is cooked, add it to the Rotel/Seasoning packet mixture. Heat on medium high for 15 minutes. Let it stand for 5 minutes. Serve in hard or soft taco shells with salsa, lettuce, sour cream and cheese.

Tada…enjoy! I enjoy mine with a nice cold DosXX or a mojito!

NASCAR Sprint All-star Race

If you are a NASCAR fan, then you are already aware that today officially starts "Race Week" at the Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord, NC.

But, if you aren't a race fan, then here is the scoop. The NASCAR Sprint All-star race, itself, doesn't start until tomorrow night at 7pm. The tickets start at $39 and include a Dierks Bentley concert. This race is 100 laps and the winner receives a large sum of money...$1 million to be exact! Check out the Fan Guide to Fun for the full schedule of events over the next two weeks.

But beware...traffic in and around the Charlotte Motor Speedway is brutal. If you must drive anywhere near Concord or the University area of Charlotte, make sure you allow extra time for your commute. If at all possible, avoid these areas! I make every attempt not to show houses, in these areas, during Race Week...the traffic is literally that brutal!

If you are going to the race...make sure you have fun, but stay safe and God bless!

TGIF~Thank God It’s Friday! It’s been a busy week and what could be better way to start the weekend off right? That’s right, a massage! Massages are truly pure bliss…heaven on earth! My client and good friend, Erica Mitchell, is a Massage Therapist. She is truly amazing and I highly recommend her if you are in the Charlotte area!

Erica Mitchell (NCTMB) is nationally certified and licensed through the NC Board of Massage and Bodywork Therapy. All states vary with their educational requirements. She attended The National Massage Therapy Institute in VA. She was required to have 600 hours of education before she could sit for her board exam. In order to maintain her NCTMB professional license, she is required to have Continuing Education (CE) of 24 hours/2 years. But, she doesn’t stop there. She continually is trying to master her trade by learning something new everyday. Erica chose Massage Therapy because she wanted a lifestyle change, a mental relaxation…to be less stressed. She wants to help and educate people on the benefits of massage therapy–an alternative to medication and physician visits.

Massage Therapy is the hands-on manipulation of the soft tissues of the body for the purpose of obtaining or maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Therapeutic massage can ease tension and reduce pain. Massage can be a part of physical therapy or practiced on its own. It is an alternative health option to help alleviate the soft tissue discomfort associated with everyday life, injury, and occupational stress. The benefits of Massage Therapy are endless, but to name a few:

Thirsty Thursday and Simply Naked!

At Y Charlotte 4 You, I will preview a great wine or a local Vineyard on Thirsty Thursday. For this 1st Edition, I am previewing a fabulous Unoaked wine.

I was dining at one of my favorite Pizza Restaurants and they were offering a special of 1/2 price bottles of wine. As I mulled across the wine list, I came across a wine that I had never heard of that sounded very interesting. Why did I think it was interesting? Because it is an Unoaked wine. It is called "Simply Naked". I chose the Chardonnay. It went well with my chicken, spinach and white cheese pizza. I found this wine to be crisp and clean tasting, without a bite. I could taste hints of melon , apple and pear. It has now become my new favorite.

As with any new favorite, I went to the internet to do some research. I went to the Simply Naked website to find out their story and to see if they had different varieties. The winemaker, Ryan Flock, wanted to be one of the few makers of Unoaked wines. He is quoted as saying "In winemaking, it's all about letting the character of the grape shine through. Oak often masks the characteristics of each varietal but unoaked wines really allow people to taste how a Merlot grape is supposed to taste, or a Chardonnay grape and so on. And since we can't use oak barrels to manipulate the flavors in the wine, we have to start with the best quality fruit and manage the entire process very carefully. It takes a lot of discipline but it's worth it in the end when we have a great tasting wine in the bottle".

So, what do they use to create the Simply Naked line? They use 100% steel barrels in place of the oak barrels to ferment and age their wines.

They have a full line of wines:

The Chardonnay is a light-medium bodied wine with tropical fruits, citrus and pear flavors with a touch of honey. It pairs best with salmon, chicken, turkey, or cream-based pasta.
The Pinot Grigio is a light bodied wine with layers of lime and melon with aromas of peach and passion fruit with hints of spice. It pairs best with shellfish, chicken, creamy pasta dishes, salads, cheese and fruit or simply by itself.
The Merlot is a medium bodied, but very silky tasting wine. It offers a blackberry jam intensity with fruit forward flavors. It pairs best with lamb, pizza, meat, tomato-based pasta, or pork.
The Cabernet Sauvignon is a medium-full bodied wine with plum, black cherry and cinnamon spice flavors. The tannins are chewy, but don't weigh down the wine. It pairs best with hard cheeses, grilled or roasted red meats and tomato-based pasta dishes.

In the restaurant, it went for $28/bottle. However, I found I could enjoy it from my local grocery store for $8/bottle. It's only offered in a few states, so check the website link (above) to find retailers. I hope you too can enjoy the wonderful line of, Simply Naked Wines!

Tasty Tuesday: The Hidden Gem of Concord, NC~Yama's Sushi and Grill

I personally believe that Yama's Sushi and Grill is definitely The Hidden Gem of Concord. My family and I love Sushi and are always looking for that amazing Sushi restaurant, well we found it at Yama's Sushi and Grill. It is located at 8455 Pit Stop Ct, Suite 105, Concord, NC 28027. It's across from Concord Mills Mall, near the Auto Bell. They don't just serve the freshest Sushi in town...they also have a full Hibachi menu.

We frequent Yama's Sushi and Grill on a regular basis and even made it a family affair...my son works there as a busboy. The ambiance is very relaxing and the people are super friendly. We consider Ken Doan, the owner and operator of Yama's, a friend and am so excited that Ken agreed to spotlight Y Charlotte 4 You's first edition of "Tasty Tuesday"!

Ken Doan opened Yama's Sushi and Grill on May 8th, 2009. His brother has a Hibachi style restaurant that doesn't serve Sushi, so he decided that would be his theme for his restaurant. He decided to open his restaurant in Concord because of the local attractions of Concord Mills Mall and Lowe's Motor Speedway, and because there weren't any great Sushi restaurants in the Concord area.

Yama's Sushi and Grill has traditional dining room service, as well as having the only Tatami Room in town. A Tatami Room is an actual private Japanese traditional dining room where you can experience your meal while sitting on the floor. Yama's also has a full wet-bar and Sushi Bar.

Yama's offers daily lunch and dinner specials, as well as "Buy one roll and get one roll 1/2 price every Sunday and Wednesday. It's a misnomer that all Sushi is raw. Yama's offers raw, cooked and vegetarian Sushi. Ken wants to make sure that everyone realizes that raw Sushi is perfectly safe to eat and that they take strict measures to ensure that their raw Sushi is prepared properly.

I hope you will dine at Yama's Sushi and Grill. If you are going, please let me know...I can never get enough!

What is Cinco de Mayo and why do we celebrate it?

Cinco de Mayo isn't the Mexican Independence Day (which is September 16), but is actually the day that the Mexican Army won the battle at Pueblo, Mexico. The Mexican Army had only 4000 soldiers and still managed to defeat the French and Mexican traitor army of 8000 soldiers. The battle took place near Pueblo, Mexico at the Mexican forts of Loreto and Guadalupe.

However, the victory didn’t last long. One year later with an army of 30,000 strong, the French invaded and defeated Mexico. Emperor Maximilion reigned for three years until the United States assisted Mexico in overthrowing Emperor Maximilion. Consequentially, Mexico executed the Emperor and his Mexican generals Miramón and Mejía, in the Cerro de las Campanas.

This battle was very significant for two reasons:

The Mexican Army of only 4000 soldiers managed to defeat the 8000 strong and better equipped French Army, which significantly boosted Mexico’s morale.
Since the Battle of Puebla, no country in the Americas has been invaded by a European military force.

On June 7, 2005, the U.S. Congress issued a Concurrent Resolution calling on the President to issue a proclamation calling upon the people of the United States to observe Cinco de Mayo with appropriate ceremonies and activities.

Camping in the Land of Waterfalls!

It was Easter break and we decided to break in the camper, for the season. We decided to go camping at Cascade Lake in Pisgah Forest, NC (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pisgah_National_Forest). If you like to tent camp or you have your own camper, then check out this link:

http://cascadelakerecreationarea.com/, for a wonderful campground experience. I have a popup camper and can get full hookups with lake view for $35/night. Cascade Lakes Campground rents canoes and paddle boats, it has two boat ramps and many private campsite boat docks. They even have a man-made beach. They have interpretive programs for kids and adults. The best thing is they are pet friendly! They are adjacent to DuPont State Forest and are open seasonally and have fantastic sunsets and views. They are also close to Historic Hendersonville, http://www.historichendersonville.org/, for dining and local shopping.

The Land of Waterfalls is a nature lover’s dream! You can make this a day trip or a vacation. Pisgah Forest and DuPont State Park is a short 1.5 hour drive, from Charlotte. If you like to Kayak, Hike, Rock Climb or Bike…then, this is the place for you: http://www.visitwaterfalls.com/.

We decided to spend a day hiking to Bridal Veils, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bridal_Veil_Falls_(Macon_County). Bridal Veils has an upper and a lower section.

I will tell you, it’s not a beginner’s hiking trail. But, we didn’t find out until we were headed back. The trail itself was easy enough…it wasn’t even the drop in elevation of 200 feet. It was the hike back that almost killed us (lol)… because what went down had to come back up. It ended up being a 4.2 mile round trip trek with a 200 feet drop in elevation. But, it was worth it! It had amazing views and I can’t even begin to describe how breathtaking the falls are…not to mention that I burned over 1000 calories (yeah)!

Then we spent a day kayaking to Hooker Falls (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hooker_Falls) with my dog Abbie. We launched right off our boat dock, at the campgrounds, and paddled the one mile up the river. Again, I can’t tell you how breathtaking the falls are!

We took in the arts at the Art Corridor…Scenic 276 in Brevard, NC (http://www.scenic276.com/category/events/) and we dined in Historic Hendersonville, NC at the Cypress Cellar (http://local.yahoo.com/info-13361342-cypress-cellar-hendersonville). The Cypress Cellar is a quaint and moderately priced restaurant offering Cajun cuisine. We had the roasted duck and lamb with sautéed vegetables, sweet potato chips and potato cakes…yummie!!

Unfortunately, all good things come to an end and we had to venture back home. However, it won’t be our last trip to the Land of Waterfalls.

From Sale to Sold: Steps to Stage Your Home

When you are ready to sell your home, then, it’s important to stage it properly. You want to evoke a feeling of warmth. Staging a home doesn’t have to be expensive, you can use the items you already have in your possession. I tell my sellers it’s important to “invite” the buyer in…you want buyers to feel as if they are “at home”. Think about that new model home and how it’s staged…that is what you want. Here are some simple steps to help your home sell faster:

De-clutter all rooms! Get rid of all the knick-knacks. You are planning on moving anyway, so just start packing your home. But make sure you store the boxes in the attic or a storage facility.

Hang artwork, but limit the family photos. A few family photos are fine, but not entire walls or shelves worth. Make sure artwork or wall art is hung at, or slightly below, eye level.

Use neutral paint colors; it really makes the areas look larger. Nothing is wrong with doing a splash of color or doing one accent wall in a bold color. You just don’t want buyers to feel they have to put in a lot of energy to make it their home. If I list a home and the seller isn’t willing to change the bold colors, then I suggest the sellers offer to repaint the walls in a neutral color before they leave and then, market it that way.

Don’t allow the kitchen to be the “catch-all”. Buyers are looking for that “designer kitchen”. Take down all the kids’ fridge drawings and pizza magnets (we all have them). Put away small appliances that you don’t use every day…especially if it’s a small kitchen. The more items on a counter give an impression of the space being small and cramped.

Use fresh flower and real fruit and plants whenever possible. In lieu of fresh flowers , do a centerpiece like this one:

Remove extra furniture…you want the space to look large and inviting. Too many furniture pieces can make the room look messy and small.

Use baskets for your remotes or magazines (or, for all your hubbies stuff that he pulls out of his pockets).

Don’t forget the garage! Don’t use it for storage...it’s for the car. Clean and organize the garage. Use shelving and plastic bins. Get a tool box and hang items on the walls.

Remember the curb appeal…try to spruce up the lawn and make it greener. If you can afford to, sod the yard. Remove debris. Add flowers for a pop of color. Power wash the home…you can do-it-yourself, easily. And, paint trim work.

Finally, keep the house clean. There is nothing worse than taking a potential buyer into a home that is filthy.

It’s important to do these steps before you actually market the home. As a listing agent, don’t be afraid to tell the seller what needs to be done before you market the home. Let them know that it will take time and effort on their part, but they will be rewarded with selling their home, faster, and possibly at a better price.

I have always been told that it’s not politically correct to mix business and religion. I recently read an ActiveRain Blog by Loreena Yeo that put things in perspective and inspired me. Please understand, my intent is not to offend anyone. But today, I want the world to know that I believe in the power of prayer.

I love being a Realtor…I find it as personally satisfying as being a Registered Respiratory Therapist. I love helping people and taking care of them. Unfortunately, a couple of years ago…I had emergency surgery and my immunity plummeted. I was catching everything my patients had. So, I had to leave the one thing that I loved and had been doing for the last 20 years. But, I found a new love…being a Realtor. I do Real Estate to help people. I still help people, just in a different way. I get tickled pink when I find my first-time homeowners their dream home or when I help a struggling home-owner sell their home. I don’t do it for the money, I know many of you are thinking I am full of it (but, you wouldn't think that if you saw my car...I drive a 8 year old Beetle Bug). But seriously, I only want to make enough money to pay my bills, enjoy the simple life, and give back to God and my community. I will be completely honest with all of you…if I am very successful and do well financially, then trust me, I won’t knock it.

I have been very blessed in my first year of Real Estate and have made lasting friendships, as well. I feel my success is due largely to prayer. I pray every day that I continue to succeed in helping people find their dream home. I pray that God gives me the strength to do or say the right thing, (or better yet, not say the wrong thing). I pray that my clients are thoroughly happy with me and their transaction. I pray that my family is safe and that we all make the right decisions. But…the most important prayer of all is that we all stay safe in our dealings with clients and that nobody becomes a victim. I pray each and every one of you have a blessed Sunday and sell homes!

Verse for today: "Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus" (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18).

QR Codes

What are QR Codes??

QR Codes, short for Quick Response, are matrix barcode (or two-dimensional code), readable by dedicated QR bar c ode readers and by our super-popular camera phones. The code consists of black modules arranged in a square pattern on a white background. The information encoded can be text, URL or other data. My particular code looks like this:

What are QR Codes used for??

It seems everyone has a Smart Phone, like the Droids. I do and I absolutely love mine. It can do anything my laptop can do, but with ease and mobility. I only use my laptop, when I am going to spend a long time on it. With a QR Code, you can virtually do anything. I use my “Shop Savvy” barcode scanner often when pricing or reviewing products, such as printers or coffee makers…what’s great about them is it’s a simple way to help the environment by “Going Green”, by reducing the waste of paper flyers. I use QR Codes in the following ways, but use your imagination.

1. on business cards to direct them to your website or blog

2. on listing flyers to direct them to the Virtual Tours of your listed properties

3. to link other sites/business’ you recommend

4. on car magnet signs

Even if you have a stock of business cards, you can add your QR code to the back. Just have mini stickers pre-printed with the code and affix them to the back of your business cards, or better yet…save $$ by printing the stickers with the QR Code, yourself. And, who doesn’t like to save a little money??

Molds 101:

I decided to blog about Mold…nasty subject that it is. I am also a Registered Respiratory Therapist, for the last 20 years of my life. I could be extremely intensive with this article, but my plan is to keep it simple. I want people to realize how potentially dangerous mold is and what to do about it. But first, I want to explain what mold is, what it can do and how to get rid of it. I have also included hyperlinks if you choose to read further. I highly recommend, as a Respiratory Therapist, that when showing a home that you know has mold…wear a mask and gloves. Make sure you inform your client if you know, before showing a home. And, if you are a listing agent…make sure you list it in the MLS (please). Too many times I have gone into a home that has an obvious mold issue and nothing was said in the MLS, to fore warn me and my clients. Even if you aren’t sure if it’s mold, simply state: “that you make no assumptions about mold in the home”. So, what is Mold??

Mold is everywhere, indoors and out. It grows anywhere there is moisture. Mold that grows outdoors is actually essential to the environment by breaking down dead organic matter. Indoors it can wreak havoc. Mold is reproduced through invisible spores that can be transferred by touch, ingested or inhaled. They can be an allergen and cause simple Hay Fever symptoms i.e. sneezing or itchy eyes, or an irritant to an asthmatic i.e. wheezing or even respiratory failure due to severe bronchospasm. But even worse, the mold spores could be potentially toxic mycotoxins. “Mycotoxicoses (Wikipedia) is the term used for poisoning associated with exposures to mycotoxins. The symptoms of a mycotoxicosis depend on the type of mycotoxin; the concentration and length of exposure; as well as age, health, and sex of the exposed individual. The synergistic effects associated with several other factors such as genetics, diet, and interactions with other toxics have been poorly studied. Therefore it is possible that vitamin deficiency, caloric deprivation, alcohol abuse, and infectious disease status can all have compounded effects with mycotoxins. In turn, mycotoxins have the potential for both acute and chronic health effects via ingestion, skin contact, and inhalation. These toxins can enter the blood stream and lymphatic system, they inhibit protein synthesis, damage macrophage (white blood cells) systems, inhibit particle clearance of the lung, and increase sensitivity to bacterial endotoxin (associated with gram negative bacteria and extremely dangerous)”.

You have Mold…so, now what??

Remember, mold spores fly through the air, so you can’t kill them. However, they will only grow in moisture, so keep things dry. You can prevent moisture by maintaining your property and making sure there aren’t any leaks or standing water. It is a misnomer that bleach kills mold. It doesn’t…it just whitens and brightens it and now you have pretty mold! The EPA states if it’s a small area (less than 10 square feet), than you can probably handle it yourself. If you do-it-yourself, make sure you use an industrial strength commercial grade fungicide (EPA approved) and make sure you wear personal protective equipment (goggles, mask and gloves) or better yet, call a professional service to do it for you!

Steps for Home Ownership:

You have decided to buy a home, but now what?? It can be a very exciting process…but, also very exhausting and overwhelming! There are so many steps to home ownership and you don’t know where to start. You probably have a ton of questions racing through your mind like: do I get pre-qualified now or later, what area do I want to reside in, do I need a quality school system, do I want to be close to work and entertainment, do I want any land, how do I make an offer, do I really need an inspection or survey, do I need a buyer agent or can I just use the agent listing the home I want to view, what are distressed properties. This is where your Exclusive Buyer Agent comes in…they answer all your questions and advise you on the process. Here is a simple new buyer checklist, do these steps in order and you will make it through closing and living in your dream home with ease:

1. Check your credit. You are entitled to a free copy of your credit report from each of the three major credit reporting agencies, every year: Equifax (http://www.equifax.com/home/en_us), TransUnion (http://www.transunion.com/) and Experian (http://www.experian.com/). You should do this before you start looking at homes. This way, you can make sure there are no discrepancies in your credit file.

2. Hire an Exclusive Buyer Agent. Think of this process as a job interview. You will be working very closely with this person and there must be compatibility for both parties involved. Meet your agent, in person, before you go view homes. Remember the listing agent works for the seller and has their best interests in mind. You need someone in your court that has your back.

3. Get pre-qualified. Your agent will offer suggestions to lenders. Shop your loan to find the best terms (but, no more than 3 times).

4. Start a file of needed bank documents: last 3 paycheck stubs, last 3 bank statements, last year’s tax records, etc.

5. Write down a list of needs and wants. The internet is a great way to do “window shopping”, first. Setup a follow-up appointment with your agent to review your needs and wants list.

6. Start home viewings and keep a journal, write down things you liked and didn’t like about each property (this will help your agent in finding your dream home)

7. Learn the mortgage and real estate lingo…the internet is a great educational tool, but can be confusing. Your Realtor® is there to educate and advise you.

8. Find your dream home and make an offer. Your Realtor® is working for you and will negotiate the best possible deal. They will take care of all necessary steps such as: inspections, surveys, closing attorney, etc.

9. Obtain your loan

Now, get packing...it's time to move!!

True story of a Blogging Nightmare!

I have fallen down the proverbial rabbit hole. If you haven't noticed...I am a newbie and addicted to blogging. I lost my blog for the first time, two nights ago, and have taken everyone's advice and am typing (and, saving) this in Word, first. By the way...thank you to all who support me in my blogging journey!

I am known to have extremely vivid dreams and nightmares. I talk in my sleep and actually do activities in my sleep. Once, I was so cold that my hubby had to help me put on my imaginary coat, literally one arm at a time and then actually buttoning my imaginary buttons. One particular nightmare I had was when I dreamt the ceiling fan was a giant spider. Another memorable dream was when my son was little and stuck in a sleeping bag that was attached to a very high ceiling with Velcro And no, I am not crazy or on drugs! I just have always had quite an imagination. I often incorporate things that have a huge impact on my day to day life into my dreams. Last night was no exception. Here is a recap of my most recent nightmare:

I always play a few games on my Android phone, right before I go to bed, and last night it was Poker. As I was getting sleepy, I decided it might be fun to download some dice games. But alas, I was too sleepy to search for dice games. I completed my evening ritual of putting in my earplugs and placing my eye mask over my face (I know...so attractive), but if I don't then my husband's XBOX shoot ‘em up game keeps me from sleeping. So, off to dream land I went. At some point in the night, I sat straight up in bed and told my husband: "I swallowed my ActiveRain dice and my blog won't be saved unless I get them"-hehehe...crazy huh?. I continued to rant and rave about losing my blog masterpiece, for several minutes. My husband is always helping me out and so sweet about my crazy nighttime escapades. This time, he offered to go get my computer so that I could get my ActiveRain dice and save my blog. Needless to say, I finally realized that I was dreaming and went back to sleep.

Moral of the story: Don't take the red pill!!

Blog Frustrations!

Aaarrrggghhh!! I had just completed my newest blog and noticed it saved as "Auto-Draft"~whoohoo! I was super excited because at that very moment, my computer crashed (no, I swear it wasn't my fault). My husband says I must have an extremely magnetic personality. I am not sure if he is being sweet and loving or obnoxious...hmmm. It seems as if everything electronic and technical turns to mush in my hands...seriously, cell phones, computers, printers, etc. It never fails...they all go on the blink.

Anyways...back to blogging...it literally took me all day to clear out the bug that burned me! But, I just knew that my blog was safe, thank God! I had spent several hours doing research to make sure I had all my ducks in a row. I was finally able to log onto ActiveRain this evening, so I could publish my blog...and it has disappeared. What the heck happened to my blog?? Please...please...can someone tell me if my blog is in the depths of hard-drive hell or not?

Oh well, I will figure it out. I am determined to let the Rains fall and become a full fledged RainMaker! But, as I continue to blog, I ask myself an important question:

"Why oh why didn't I choose the blue pill?"

Just a quickie blog: Social Networking from the eyes of a Newbie!

Wow, if my friends and family could see me now! I am not the most computer savvy person and didn't have a clue what social networking was all about. My new broker-in-charge instructed me to start building profiles to all the following sites: Facebook, Zillow, Trulia, Homes.com. And then, he started throwing technical terms at me like "blogging" and "search engine optimization". All sorts of questions were racing through my mind:

What is social networking
What is "Search Engine Optimization"
What the heck is blogging
How does this help me build my business
Who really has the time for all of this

I wish I could have stepped to the left and done the "Time Warp", but instead I boarded the train to Social Networkingville and quickly realized that I couldn't stop there. That's when I figured out about Twitter, Linkedn and finally my newest addiction...ActiveRain~~Tada (as Super hero Marvin says...think Jeff Dunham). I have created profiles on each and every one of these sites and am trying to network with the best of them. I find that I LOVE social networking and my family likens me to the lady on the cell phone commercial that tweets and texts her family at the dinner table (that is so me). I can officially say that I am doing the following social networking activities:

I am on Facebook
I Tweet
I am a blogger
I'm linkedn
and finally...I am a Sprinkler (I don't consider myself a full fledged Rainmaker quite yet...as I have alot to learn).

I believe I am currently enrolled in every ActiveRain University class available and continue to read the FAQ's and tutorials. I am still trying to figure out how to "customize" my outside blog. Next, I plan to try and figure out this "Search Engine Optimization" thing. I am thirsty for knowledge. So, if anyone has a copy of "Social Networking for Dummies...please loan me your copy! Karen Ann Stone (Active Rainmaker) gave me lots of tips on groups and exposure~whoohoo! I might have a handle on this stuff, soon!

If you can't envision the excitement oozing from my pores as you read this blog...then note, that it's 3 am and I am blogging (I really do love it). I am super excited about my future networking opportunities and how it will build my business!

Help!

Hey all, I am Mechelle and a newbie to ActiveRain. I am not very PC savvy. Is there an easy tutorial like "ActiveRain with blogging for Dummies"? I am trying to customize my blog and I have no clue what a "background image" is. I am watching the tutorials and have signed up for ActiveRain University....but, the webinars aren't until next week. In the mean time, what can I do? Any advice is greatly appreciated!!

Spring Fever in NC!

We are officially in Day Light Savings~~Yeah, I personally love spring time! Charlotte and it's surrounding areas offer so many activities that you can participate in...and, you don't have to travel too far. Now is the time to do all the things you love and try new and exciting activities, too. In this post, I will highlight some of these great activities and include an easy link to their site:

1. The U.S. National Whitewater Center is located in Charlotte (http://usnwc.org/). It has a number of activities to enjoy. It boasts Rafting, Kayaking, Mountain Biking, just to name a few. If you aren't faint-of-heart, then try the Mega Zip Line (1,123 feet over Class 3 and 4 rapids) or the Mega Jump (a controlled jump off the 46 foot tower). You can play for a day or buy a season pass and play all year.

2. Historic Latta Plantation is located in Charlotte (http://lattaplantation.org/latta/index.php?page=home). It holds events throughout the year...like the Easter Egg Hunt. You can picnic, hike, go horseback riding, Kayak, and even take a Segway tour. Make sure to check out the Latta Plantation Nature Center and Preserve (http://charmeck.org/mecklenburg/county/ParkandRec/InsideTheDepartment/Divisions/StewardshipServices/NaturePreserves/Pages/Latta.aspx).

3. Jetton Park is located in Cornelius, right on Lake Norman (http://charmeck.org/mecklenburg/county/ParkandRec/Parks/ParksByRegion/NorthRegion/Pages/Jetton.aspx). It has a 1.5 mile walking/roller blading trail, a 1.3 mile bike trail, a playground, picnic areas, and tennis courts. It has a "Sunning Beach" (not for swimming).

4. The Lazy 5 Ranch is located in Mooresville (http://www.lazy5ranch.com/). It is a 3.5 mile drive-thru animal park where you will see animals from all over the world...or, better yet, take the wagon ride tour!

5. The Biltmore House in Asheville, NC (http://biltmore.com/). It is just a 2 hour drive from Charlotte. Enjoy the festivals and tour the house and gardens, go to a wine tasting at The Winery, or shop, dine and play at Antler Hill Village. Stay the night (or longer) at the Inn on Biltmore Estate.

6. The Great Wolf Lodge and Waterpark in Concord, NC (http://www.greatwolf.com/concord/waterpark) is fun for kids of all ages. It has 12 huge slides, 3 (84 degree) indoor pools, a giant water fort and even a huge outdoor pool. They even offer an all-inclusive dining and lodging package.

Whether you want excitement or relaxation, you are sure to find it near Charlotte, North Carolina!
