Twenty years ago today Tim Berners-Lee authored "Information Management, a Proposal". What is that you ask? That was the start of distributed hypertext system, what we know as the web. It took a couple of more years for a demo and the middle of the 1990's and two additional people(Jim Clark and Marc Andreessen to bring us Netscape.
The web has changed the way most people search for information, stay in touch, keep up to date on news, manage their financials(remember when it was great to print checks off the computer, now who uses check, thanks to online banking), watch tv(thank you Hulu), order food. It has also changed how we conduct our real estate business.
Most said the web would be the downfall of agents. I say it has been one of the best things to happen. Gone are the real estate books that came out weekly, or the MLS that you had to print out and try to decipher. We are now able to better serve our clients by sending property information, area information, pictures, to them directly, to review in their leisure. Our clients are so much more informed about what is going on in the real estate market thanks to the web. And when we are in escrow, thanks to the web, clients are able to review contracts, and disclosures online.
My business, my life and my entertainment are all better thanks to the web and Tim Berners-Lee.
