Mel vs. the Volcano Volcano=1 Mel=0 - 10/28/08 03:45 PM
I recently took a trip to Washington and had time to visit Mount St. Helens. I was staying in Seattle. I couldn’t imagine being that close to a volcano and not check it out! It was a beautiful sunny day and I was ready for a road trip (approximately 96 miles). Armed with a bag of snacks and camera in hand we started out on our adventure.

If you squint hard you can see the volcano in the background.
When we arrived at the welcome center I was jumping with excitement. As I learned more about the eruption in 1980 I … (45 comments)

If you are going to San Francisco... Take me! - 10/23/08 03:31 AM
In August 2008 I took a trip to California.  It was a blast!  I stayed for over a week and visited many places.  One that sticks out in my mind was San Francisco.  I love the TV show Monk and it is filmed there.  That is not the only reason, however.  I saw the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz and spent time at Fisherman's Warf.  It being August, I expected a warm summer day.  That was not the case.  The sunshine winked at me from time to time but it was windy, cold, and wet.  Oh, did I mention the fog?  No, well … (24 comments)

For mom. - 10/22/08 06:09 AM
My mother was born to a farmer in Texas not so long ago.  She had the good sense to marry my father and there are four of us.  Her heart is large and her hands are always warm.  She taught me how to be a good Southern girl and encouraged me to reach as high and far as my imagination would allow.
Ruby's (I love that name) birthday was earlier this month.  She spent it in the hospital due to heart issues.  Ironically they were very similar to the heart issues my husband had a few months ago.  Our prayers were answered so she … (26 comments)

Pirate Days in The Colony, TX.  2008 was a huge success.  The festive atmosphere included- Music from local bands, food with flair, many vendors, sword fights, and Pirates from 'far, far away'.  I was there to participate in the fundraiser for the Friends of The Colony Dog Park (non-profit organization).

Friday Morning Bitch Slap - Salty's - 10/17/08 09:09 AM
I recently returned from Seattle, WA.  The trip was short but full of fun and activity.  The locals are nice and very helpful.  (When I visit from out of state that is the first thing I notice).  The food, shopping, and sights were unmatched compared to other downtown areas I have visited within the US thus far.  It is not a stretch to say it is my favorite.  Not all was perfect, however.
After spending a long day chasing every tourist attraction I could find I decided to give my running shoes a rest.  I wanted to experience the 'good life' for one … (26 comments)

Seattle Fun? I answered an email to someone about what there is to do in Seattle, so I figured I might as well post it here, too.  Here were some of my ideas and favorite things:
Volunteer Park in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle
Ferry ride to Bainbridge Island and make sure to walk around in Winslow right off the ferry
Waterfront - lots of good seafood and shopping

On line predators. - 10/07/08 08:11 AM
As a mother of two teenage girls I pay close attention to what they are doing and who they speak with on the internet.  They are aware of my watchful eyes.  However, you can never be too careful.  This morning I took my 16 yr daughter's laptop for a spin.  She video IM's and all her friends are stacked in one window.  Looking closely at the pics I noticed a handful of boys and girls probably the same age.  But there were also two obviously 'older' men.  They looked older than me!  You cannot hide wrinkles and salt and pepper hair.

Bow Wow Pow Wow at Bill Allen Park in The Colony, TX. - 10/04/08 07:05 PM
There was an impressive turnout for the Bow Wow Pow Wow at Bill Allen Park in The Colony, TX.  Many people enjoyed the opportunity to spend time with other dog lovers and get to know local vendors in our community.  I am one of the volunteers raising money for a dog park.  The city has approved the construction but our non-profit organization will provide funds for maintenance.  I am not asking YOU for money.  I only ask you to view my video/slide show to raise awareness of the project.  Furthermore, if you have tips or suggestions regarding how to provide a safe and dog … (15 comments)

Vote or Shut UP already! - 10/01/08 05:55 AM
It is that time again.  The economy is in turmoil, unemployment rates are high and the price of gas is through the roof, AGAIN.  We are in need of nothing less than a knight in shining armor.  So where is he/she?  I am not able to cast a confident vote yet.  Come election day I will, however.
I was very surprised, shocked even, to find out a good friend of mine has never voted in a Presidential election.  We have argued our political views for years yet she has never taken the time to vote.  I feel jilted and 'put on'.  She … (28 comments)
