Letter to Mike

I was recently contacted by an old friend on FaceBook. While we were catching up I told him I was about to skydive for the first time. He was very excited because he has been wanting to do it for many years. As we traded messages back and forth I was even more encouraged to dive.

My phone and email have been blowing up with my friends asking me how the dive went. Instead of telling the same story repeatedly I decided to post my letter to Mike. His first jump will be July 11, so he wanted all the details.

"I don't want to influence your experience by giving you too many details. It will be different for everyone. As you know, I fear many things so it was a very big deal for me. I had little sleep the night before and the drive was nerve racking. I went to Skydive Dallas. It is located 1hr north of McKinney. From the first phone call I made to them I could tell they were an organized operation. I highly recommend them to anyone considering doing this.

Upon arrival I checked in and signed many pages of legal documents. They all basically said they would not be held liable if something happened. There were six other first time divers checking in.

We went into a small room and watched a short video showing us how to arch and various ways of landing depending upon the instructor and wind. Then we went to the hanger. Our names were placed on a dry erase board and we were assigned a dive number along with an instructor and photographer. About 30mins prior to take off we put on jumpsuits and our individual instructors gave us instructions and fitted us with the equipment. The photographer interviewed us on camera and took pictures. It was a hot day and the suit was heavy with the equipment. I am only 5'2" and 120lbs so perhaps it was a challenge due to my size. FYI- Skydive Dallas will not let anyone dive over 210lbs.

We waited for another twenty minutes before we boarded the plane. While we waited we got to see other people coming down solo and tandem. It was way cool!

The photographer interviewed me again while on the plane. The instructor gave additional safety tips while the plane was rising to 13,500 ft. At some point the instructor strapped himself to me. My shoulders are a little narrow so the straps were not tight. It was not a big deal because the instructor was attached but it tugged and bruised just a little.

The photographer went out first and held onto the plane like something out of a spy movie. I was the first one to jump! I could hear most of what my instructor was saying but the wind was loud at first.

Once the chute opened it was quieter and it felt like we were flying. Everything was very clear and bright. He let me steer the chute a bit and taught me how to do a couple of tricks.

The landing was perfect! The photographer was already on the ground so he came up to interview me again and take more pics. The instructor took me into a back room to discuss the flight, give me a certificate, sign my flight log and asked me to fill out a survey about him and sign his flight log. He and the whole staff were terrific! They did a great job of calming my fears.

After the jump I was in a dazed state. I couldn't believe I did it. It made me feel completely invincible. Now I know I can and will do anything!!!

I would do it over and over again but it is expensive! I would love to be an instructor but with my small stature I think it is impossible. All the instructors seemed to be taller and stronger than the jumpers they were assigned to.

I hear sunset jumps are the most beautiful. I loved the one I did, however. I arrived at 9am but didn't jump until 12pm. I don't know if you remember but I have brown eyes with just a hint of green. My friends told me my eyes were bright green when I landed. I don't know if it was the lack of oxygen or the excitement. Also, there is a skydiver's hand shake- side ways open handed soft slap then bumping fists with your thumb up.

The video is really cool. It is surreal for me to watch it and my family loves it!

I hope I didn't give too much away. It will be different for you. This was one of my biggest fears so it probably affected me on other levels. You sound like a pro already! I cannot wait to hear about your experience.

Afterward, I had a celebratory beer at a nearby restaurant with friends and family. It was a lot of fun! The moment that sticks with me is when my 14 year old daughter Loren looked at me and said, "Mom, I am very proud of you." Now that is something worth taking a risk for."

What is a Zaxby's???

I have to admit my eyebrow was raised when I saw the sign "Zaxby's Coming Soon" by the roadside. As in everything, google lead me to the answer. It is a very popular chicken franchise restaurant.

I dropped in to take pictures but the manager said I needed corporate approval so I cannot post them. I ordered wings to try them out. In my humble opinion I wouldn't say they are better than KFC (considering I love KFC).

So if you are in The Colony, TX. I suggest you give them a shot. They are located at 4547 Main St. You cannot miss them.

BTW- The crushed ice is a nice perk with the soft drinks.

Dear Diary, my passion is... Real Estate (insert heavy sigh here).

When I was a teenager I thought being a Realtor would be the coolest job in the world! I didn't personally know any Realtors. The only examples I saw were attractively dressed professionals driving big shiny cars and living in beautiful homes. They set their own work schedules and helped families achieve the American Dream of homeownership. What is not to love?

I came from very humble beginnings. My parents worked for ‘the man' to earn a steady income and had no entrepreneurial aspirations. The thought of working for 100% commission was a nightmare to them and they instilled that fear in me. That being said, my dream of becoming a Realtor would not be realized for many years.

Fortunately I started working in the electronic components industry and became a manager at a very young age. It was a career that afforded the ability to take real estate investment and business management classes.

I decided to become a loan officer. It led me to help families facing foreclosure (even when it wasn't a way of life). I began working for an appraiser to become an apprentice. One day it occurred to me, while I was explaining to a Realtor how I came to an appraised value, I am better qualified to sell homes than the Realtor on the phone. I asked myself, "What are you waiting for?" So I decided to dive into the world of real estate sales and never looked back. Some would say I went about it the long hard way and they would be correct!

I am a Texas Real Estate Broker, coach, mentor, salesperson and business owner. It would be a challenge for me to calculate how many investors, families, and agents I have helped achieve their financial goals while realizing my own.

My career permits time to do other things I am passionate about as well. I am a wife, mother, domestic engineer, daughter, sister, volunteer and a friend of many. What other job could afford someone the opportunity to do all those things?

My second choice would be a head chef in a five star restaurant. I wouldn't have time for much else, however.

Yes, my passion is real estate! I was right, it is the coolest job in the world.

And every now and then I get to do this!

BETTER TO LIGHT A CANDLE FOR ONE LOST DOG . . .

I want to bring attention to this post. Thanks for reading.

Via Renée (Renee) Hoover (Ed Nikles Custom Builder, Inc. and Nikles Realty, Inc.):

"A BEAUTIFUL POCONO CHRISTMAS STORY"

One of the greatest gifts I have ever received as a mother was to witness the deed of my youngest son and his wife this past Christmas. Richard and Emily amazed me with their sensitivity and generosity - in my mind, personifying the true meaning of Christmas.

While discussing with each other what each would like for Christmas, they decided to make their Christmas gifts to each other in the way of gifts to our local struggling animal shelter. Their scheme was not a small one. They began by inviting all of their friends and relatives to participate with donations of old blankets, toys and any useful items for the care of animals. They offered to collect and warehouse the donations on their own. The call was heard, and the donations piled in.

They then decided to set aside a certain amount of money, which was considerable, and went on a shopping spree at our local Sam's Club and pet store. The list was long ~ toys, medicines, cleaning supplies, shampoos, conditioners, dry food supplies, wet food supplies, vitamins, chews, grooming aids, and many more varied and sundries items.

There living room was full; a large portion of their basement was filled. Twenty loads to the truck, and they were off on Christmas Eve to deliver their red sled full of goodies. I hope your hearts will be as warmed as mine.

Still Loading . . .

Not quite finished yet . . .

Special people on a special day . . .

He says, "When does it end?"

The kitties are exuberant!

Training Day- or how about training for 79 days?

We have a tradition in the Botting household- Every year we train for the Texas Round Up hosted in Austin, TX. This year the race will be held on April 25th. Families from across the state come to compete in a 5k and 10k race. The program started in 2004 to promote wellness and healthier living for Texans. We are one of the largest states in the US but statistically one of the most under insured. It just makes good sense to make an effort to promote fitness.

Awards are given for the fittest Texan, fittest kid, and fittest family. Handicapped and wheel chair participants are also welcome to join in the event. The race takes you through the downtown area of Austin and the weather usually cooperates. The race ends at the state Capitol.

This is how WE do it- register on line for the race and book a room in Austin near downtown. We start training at least 60 days in advance by walking the track every night until we can reach a 10k momentum. (We also use swim training to help build strength and endurance). We show up at the booths early on race day because we stayed close by. We have four walkie talkies- one for me, one Tony, one for Amanda and one for Loren. There is usually a massive crowd and it is easy to lose track of your loved ones. (Cell phones get too sweaty). Amanda will outrun us all! The rest of us walk at a steady pace. As a family we are not concerned with coming in first or any particular placement in the race. Participating in the event and finishing the trek is what we shoot for.

If you live in Texas I would love to see you there. For those who do not live in Texas I would encourage you to enter a similar program with your family or by yourself. You will not regret it, I promise!

PS. Come on now! Don't make me go Denzel on you!

Yeah, no school today! Part II

Yesterday I wrote a post regarding SNOW DAY. It had been raining in my area for a couple of days and the temperature was threatening to drop below freezing. The kids had a day off from school but it was a joke. There wasn't much ice and we all got a little bored.

Today is a different story. It started to sleet around 8pm last night and didn't stop until about 3am this morning. How do I know? My electricity went in and out. It is 21.9 so the precipitation is now a glaze on all the roads. Now this is what I call a snow day, without the snow. There is no chance we will leave the house today.

Yesterday was full of baking, playing Wii, watching movies, cooking a nice dinner, etc... If I had known we would be stuck again I would have stretched out some of that fun. Now what do we do?

This is a picture of my children and their friends enjoying a much warmer day!

In the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex we have enjoyed a mild winter thus far. Most days we can get away with a light jacket or sweater to keep us warm. BUT NOT TODAY! It has been raining since yesterday and the temperature is continuing to drop. My children excitedly announced there would be no school today. (I double checked, just in case).

So what do we do when there is a school closing? Typically we bake and watch TV all day. The kids shrugged when I suggested this. I would love to get new suggestions on how to spend an 'ice day'. (Cleaning out the closets didn't go over well either).

How long do you think it would take to clean out these closets?

This picture has nothing to do with this post. I took it and I like it!

Tacos for a cause!

I love volunteering and giving time to charitable organizations. There is nothing like the feeling you get knowing you have made a difference in someones life. In my busy world I cannot always find time and in this market the donation dollars are becoming more sparse than ever. However, Blue Mesa made it easy. Everyone has to eat, eh?

The Blue Mesa Grill is a well known restaurant in the D/FW Metroplex. They have excellent food and atmosphere. Another thing they have is a desire to help the community. For every taco sold they donate one dollar to charity. The money goes to shelters for children and even Operation Kindness, a no-kill shelter for animals. You have to love a restaurant who's motto is, "Food is art. Tequila is life."

This little guy was adopted from Operation Kindness in 1997.

I will be making my donation having lunch there later today!

My First Thankful Thursday Post!

For my first Thankful Thursday post I would like to introduce Abigail. I call her Abby, Abbysmell, and anything cute that pops into my brain at the time.

I wanted a small dog. I have been a dog parent for many years but they have always been large. You see, my dogs are rescued. Shelters usually have large dogs and I just cannot resist their big brown eyes. The sadder the story, the more likely I will welcome them into my home.

My husband is an even bigger sap than I when it comes to these hairy creatures. He refuses to adopt from a breeder because he says there are too many good dogs put down every day. By adopting from a shelter you are not only saving a life you may put an irresponsible breeder out of business.

It is no big surprise he was against me adopting a Chihuahua. His argument was that I shouldn't waist good money on the purchase. He said they are yappy and always under your feet. He was concerned it would be hard to train and my other dogs wouldn't get along with one. We came to a compromise, I could adopt if I found one at a shelter.

For two years I called shelters. I put my name on a list at each local shelter and would check back frequently. It was pain staking to say the least. One day I was in a store and someone had the cutest little Chihuahua puppy I have ever seen. I asked her where she got it and she gladly gave me the business card of the breeder. I was a little disappointed but didn't give her my reasons. When I went to the register the clerk said, "Hey, why don't you go to www.petfinder.com?" I explained why I couldn't just adopt any dog and she told me they have shelters as well as breeders on the site. She happened to have a laptop there and we did a search for the breed in my zip code. Low and behold, there was one just a few miles away!!! I called to make sure the dog hadn't been adopted yet and was told, "No, but she has been here a few weeks. She doesn't like kids and is not in good health. We will have to put her to sleep if she is not adopted over the weekend."

I jumped in my car and drove there immediately. When they took me to the kennels I saw many large barking dogs. In the mix was a tiny Chihuahua. She was shaking and looked intimated. I picked her up and could see how skinny she was and it broke my heart. I knew she was the one for me. The cost to adopt her was $10. I had a $20 so I told them to keep the change for donation.

I held that dog in my arms for hours. I did my best to let her know I was now going to take care of her. She seemed to understand. When my husband came home from work he said, "What a cute little dog. Is she lost? Are you looking for her home?" I said, "She is home." He didn't put up much of a fight once I told him how I came about adopting her. The price impressed him, to say the least.

I took her to the vet the following Monday. He told me she had been used as a breeder dog and had been taken advantage of. She had too many litters and her health was in danger. She had a heart murmur and four abscessed teeth. Her hind legs were stressed from all the extra weight of pregnancy, etc...

I had a long cry after leaving the vet's office that day. It saddened me to think how she may have been used then dumped at a shelter once she wasn't of any value. Getting her teeth fixed and getting her well was expensive. The vet said she may not survive all the work that needed to be done.

I am happy to say she is doing well! Once her teeth were fixed she started to gain weight and play just like a regular dog. All the fears my husband had of small dogs where thrown out. She is not yappy and doesn't get under your feet. She rules the house over the larger dogs.

I am her ‘main' person. She sits with me, sleeps with me, greets me at the door with excitement, hangs on my every word and is the only one in my house who really seems to enjoy my singing! It has been three years now and I cannot imagine life without her. I learned a good lesson in patience and received a beautiful gift. My friends say I should have named her Lucky.

If you are interested in adopting a pet I would encourage you to check out your local shelter first. There are many animals there looking for a good home. If you are like me you just may find unconditonal love.

In this economy it may be hard to take on an extra expense. There have been many animals left in foreclosed homes. If you are afraid of the cost of adopting a new pet but have a big heart I would encourage you to become a foster parent. The animals are not well enough to be adopted but the medical cost will be paid for you. Please google it to find out what you can do to help. It may not cost you anything but a little time. Is that too much to ask?

Home Owners Beware.

I received an interesting call from my mother two days ago. She had been contacted by someone regarding her mortgage. He told her she could get a loan modification and here is how, "Don't pay your mortgage. When you receive a letter from the lender regarding the late payments I will contact them on your behalf. They will make arrangements to modify your loan. My fee is $299, but you will save at least two months of regular payments."

My heart sank. I asked, "Are you late? Why did this person call you?" She explaned she hadn't been late but has an ARM (adjustable rate mortgage) and he mentioned he knew. My question is how did he know? He also told her the rate was about to go up.

I am glad she called to let me know about the latest scam. She was smart enough to ask him to send an email regarding the conversation. He was dumb enough to do it. She sent a forward to me and I am going to report him at the highest level of authority I can find.

If you are late on your mortgage payments, ARM or not, there are professionals that can help you. Seek the advice of your local Realtor. Don't believe you can scam your lender with the help of someone who sounds like they know how.

***Christmas Parade in The Colony, TX.***

Saturday December 6th there was a Christmas Parade in The Colony, TX. I personally could not attend but I heard it was the best one yet. A lot effort goes into these events and the community involvement is treasured.

I am happy to announce the 'Friends of The Colony Dog Park' float won first place in the 'most creative' category. We were not able to procure a trailer so we used what we had. (We are a non-profit organization). The message came across loud and clear, however. Four large dogs were in the back and 'How much is that doggie in the window' blared out of the speakers.

A special thanks goes out to Lisa Pierce. We couldn't have done it without you!

Buyers: If You Want the Plasma TV, Be Sure It's Written In Your Contract!

LaShawn Norden made a very good point in her post. My hope would be a new agent would read it and spare themselves some grief.

Via LaShawn Norden:

No one likes personal property disputes. I mean really, closing days are meant to be "happy days" when everyone celebrates, not when you yell or scream because the surround-sound speakers are "missing" or worse...the flat screen TV is no longer mounted on the bedroom wall!

All kidding aside...if you want to avoid an uncomfortable (and potentially deal-breaking) situation, it's very important that you know what "personal property" is being sold with the house and what "personal property" is not....and, if you want the Seller to leave something that they didn't include via the listing agreement or in the Seller's Disclosure, ASK FOR IT by making sure it's written in your offer and negotiated as part of the sale!

I know it can be confusing to determine what is "supposed" to come with the home, but I can tell you from experience that just because a TV is mounted to the wall doesn't mean that it's staying with the house.

As a Buyer's Agent in Seminole County, I often make it a point to identify those items that are considered "personal property" to be sure that the Buyer is fully aware of what they can expect to find remaining when they walk through the property before closing. If the Buyer identifies something specific that they would like the Seller to include with the sale of the house, I make sure to include it in the offer.

Although sales contracts do typically outline the existing appliances, ceiling fans, light fixtures, etc. that are expected to remain with the property when it sells (unless the Seller excludes them from the contract), there are always additional items that can (and do) become areas of dispute if not agreed upon upfront. Here is a list of those items I am most often writing in offers on behalf of my Buyers:

Flat screen TV's mounted to the wall

Surround sound stereo speakers

Pool equipment such as hoses, brushes, vacuums, etc.

Wine coolers/sub-zero refrigerators

Custom-made closet systems (not mounted to the wall)

Tool benches/storage shelving in the garage

Extra refrigerators or freezers (possibly kept in the garage)

Detached storage sheds

Children's playsets and trampolines

Decorative water fountains/bird baths

Decorative hose reels/artwork mounted to exterior of home

Non-permanent landscape lighting

Basketball poles/backboards

While this list is not intended to be comprehensive, it is intended to remind Buyers that what they see is not always what they get.

An experienced Buyer's Agent can help you make sure closing day is one filled with warm chocolate chip cookies and a celebratory glass of wine instead of tears or frustration.

If you or someone you know is in need of an agent who is a stickler for details, I'd welcome the opportunity to earn the business. References from happy Buyers who have had the Plasma on the wall (amongst other things) when they closed are readily available upon request!

Dodie's Seafood Cafe, Carrollton, TX.

If there is one thing I can appreciate it is good Cajun and Creole food. At Dodie's Seafood Cafe located in Carrollton, TX. they really know their business. The first time I walked in the door (probably four years ago) I was transported to many vacations spent in New Orleans on Bourbon Street. The wait staff is courteous and the food is authentic. So if you are wanting good food at a reasonable price but don't have time to visit The Big N.O. drop by Dodie's on Josey just north of Frankford. You will enjoy it.

"I GUAR..AN..TEE!"

Owned and operated by Jeff and Michelle Neri.

BTW- 'Oysters Dodie' is my favorite dish on the menu. The oyster is shucked, seasoned with butter, oil, herbs then placed on the grill and served piping hot. It doesn't get any better than that!

Dog gone Funny!

The SPCA is a nonprofit organization that cares for animals. It takes in many homeless pets per day. They care for them physically as well as emotionally. It is not all dogs and cats, however. They often get horses, birds, and an occasional pot belly pig. Every Year there is a contest held called 'PetFlix Film Festival'. The Grand Prize is $2500! Entries must be received by May 15th with a minimal $10 fee. I love this contest because the entries are very creative and, let's face it, I love animals. This year I am considering entering the contest. The competition is fierce but I am in real estate so I am used that.

Here are some previous winners- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QwbTc4SGDFY&eurl=http://www.spca.org/site/PageServer?pagename=petflixfilmfestival_videos&feature=player_embedded

And check out- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gkjM_ZHynwE&feature=channel

They are too cute to miss! I will try my best to be a worthy adversary.

BTW- If you are considering pet adoption please give the beautiful animals at the SPCA a chance. They are always looking for a good home.

Marketing a Commercial Real Estate Book

This book is really getting a lot of exposure. I cannot wait to get my hands it!

Via Josef Katz - Trump University {Marketing Maestro}:

If you look at the post I reblogged yesterday you can see we launched a new book. C Tann-Starr took the initiative to share the info with the AR community (thanks again). Today (and I probably should have done this a few days ago...) I wanted to share some of the behind the scenes info on our book marketing effort and ask for your help.

I have participated in a number of book launches over the years. But this one is shaping up to be different. When we checked the Amazon ranking for Commercial Real Estate 101a week or two ago the book was ranked #335,105 overall. Not very high but the book was not available for shipping. Today is a different story thanks to our marketing efforts.

Our goal is to get the book to #1 overall but at a minimum to #1 in Business and Investing and the Real Estate categories. The second goal has since been accomplished.

So how are we going to hit #1 without spending any money on media?

There are two main efforts. The first is a very direct approach to our clients and customers offering them bonus material for helping us out. Feel free to check out the promotion for Commercial Real Estate if you have an interest.

The second is to try and maintain our rankings and sales volumes by utilizing PR, social media, and networking.

So what does this all mean to you? Why should I care?

OK I'll get to the point. We are looking for some people to help spread the word via social media and networking. If you are interested in helping us out and learning more about our marketing efforts or you are just interested in having some fun then we can talk about the following:

Inside scoop on our marketing plan

Content for a blog post

A gift from Trump U. (to be discussed offline - sorry I can't give everything away...)

Bragging rights to say you worked with me… (OK Trump University)

and most importantly my/our gratitude for your help…

If you are interested in playing along leave me a comment or send me an email.

I will be Twittering sales rank info during the day and week to keep folks updated on our progress. Feel free to follow or join us and tag your postings #CRE101 so we can find you in our searches. I will share some results once the effort is completed.

So do you want to help us out?

I didn't like it. I didn't like it at all!

I didn't like it but I absolutely loved it! After holding my breath for over a year I finally saw Quantum of Solace. Turning blue was the least of my worries, however. There were no gadgets, very little time with Aston Martin and Daniel Craig didn't show any of his ‘money maker' bod.

The cast was amazing and the plot was dead on. I even loved hating the villain in this one. I don't feel it stayed true to all the Bond movies of the past. (Though I loved them). It was more serious and grown up. Perhaps with the changing culture we needed more fight and less fluff. I can't even recall one corny line throughout the entire thing!

I will not give away the movie by giving you too much information. What I will say is that I cannot wait for the special edition DVD.

If the Powers that Be are listening, "Bring back the gadgets, give me more Aston and keep Daniel."

Poor guy, he never saw it coming...

I had to take my car into the dealership today for various reasons. It is a three year old Black Cadillac CTS. Though it has been the love of my life since day one, I cheated. I was given the latest upgraded model of the same car in a different color. Let me tell you something, when I turned it on it certainly returned the favor.

Since I had a little time on my hands I decided to treat myself to lunch. Allen, Texas used to be a small farming town. Things have changed as of late. There are many new and exciting things going on. One is the opening of a new shopping center called Waterscreek. It has everything you would need to spend an afternoon or evening. There are lofts and condos as well. The shopping and restaurants are second to none.

I love the landscape and sound of the creek running throughout. Check out the horses. They look like they are made of copper but I am really not sure.

I had an awesome lunch at Naan. The restaurant is owned by a very ambitious young woman. The service and food are spectacular!

So are you wondering who you have to feel bad for? My husband of course. I got so 'excited' about driving that car and hanging out in Allen he will not hear the end of it for a while. We all know I usually win these battles so he should just concede now!

If you feel inclined to watch the experience in a slide show please click below. I dropped by to say hello to a friend and her pet chicken and Lab Sam. That explains the end of the video.

The Power is in 'The Terms'.

In all the years I have been in real estate, the seasoned agents may smirk, I have been told the most important thing in home buying is location, location, location. Almost nine years ago when I was sitting in my first real estate class the instructor said it over and over. It is such a common saying you think of it first when someone asks, "What is most important?" (Old car also comes to mind but that is for another post).

It has shifted. Did you feel it? When speaking with two buyers this week they asked me, "What are the interest rates? What do you think I will qualify for?" I cannot tell you how happy this made me. I was a loan officer prior to being a real estate salesperson. This parallels my first set of questions to a prospective buyer. The mindsets have adjusted, the questions are good ones.

The shift we have also seen over the previous year is people are being more realistic about their home ownership needs. Cost of ownership is first, location is second, and amenities are now pulling in third.

In this economy many good people have suffered losing their home to foreclosure and seeing their retirement circle the drain. I myself felt the shift of the stock market when I opened the mail and figured out exactly what I had left/lost. JL Boney said it best when he said, "Just keep thinking long term." Well, not all of us have that option if no longer in the workforce or planning the end of our career. In my opinion real estate is still the best investment.

I cannot say I am happy about what has happened to the real estate market over the past 24 months. However, it is refreshing to see how buyers are changing their priorities. It was a shift I never expected to see in my lifetime.

BTW- Have you hugged your loan officer today? (Insert expletive here). Some may feel they helped get us into this 'adjustment' but I have a feeling they are going to be an asset again.

Then the check came. It was a lot less than what I expected so I had to do some close inspection. I saw that I wasn't charged for some of what was ordered. I called the waitress back over to the table. I showed her the mistake and she informed me she omitted some things on purpose because of the slow service and mix up. I told her I didn't have a problem paying what I actually owe and wanted her to adjust the ticket. She smiled and said, "I hope you have children and you are teaching them your principles. Most people would have paid and left." This made me feel good so I started to think maybe her service wasn't so bad after all. (I know, a sucker for compliments).

Let's fast forward to a few days later. I am at the same restaurant with a prospective new agent. (Still wanting to feed the craving). The service was good and the food was great! When the check came it was exactly what I expected. I hand my card to the waitress and she says, "You were you here a few days ago, right?" Me, "Yes, is there some sort of problem?" She said, "I heard how nice you were to the other waitress and about how you wouldn't let her under charge you."

Needless to say, the agent signed with me and will be coming on next week. Not too shabby, eh? My point of telling you this is not to toot my own horn. It is to remind you the smallest amount of kindness and sticking to your principles (regardless of your disappointment in others) will be paid back in Karma or in cash. Sometimes both!

Mel vs. the Volcano Volcano=1 Mel=0

I recently took a trip to Washington and had time to visit Mount St. Helens. I was staying in Seattle. I couldn’t imagine being that close to a volcano and not check it out! It was a beautiful sunny day and I was ready for a road trip (approximately 96 miles). Armed with a bag of snacks and camera in hand we started out on our adventure.

If you squint hard you can see the volcano in the background.

When we arrived at the welcome center I was jumping with excitement. As I learned more about the eruption in 1980 I was amazed at the pure power of this monument. My husband teased me, “It could erupt any time. Doesn’t that make you a little nervous?” Not me! If it is my time to go there is nothing I can do about it. So I insisted on going as high as the laws of gravity will allow.

1000 feet up and I am still jumping with excitement. 2000 feet up and I can see snow of the ground. 3000 feet up and I almost fainted! I cannot express the feeling of panic that came over me. I had to get the heck out of there immediately! I suddenly had a better understanding of Jesse Clifton. It was almost time to call in the rescue squad.

2000 feet down! (two lane bridge)

There you have it. Mount St. Helens won this time. Apparently there are some things I cannot do. However, I wouldn't trade the experience. Taking pics was a blast.

If you are going to San Francisco... Take me!

In August 2008 I took a trip to California. It was a blast! I stayed for over a week and visited many places. One that sticks out in my mind was San Francisco. I love the TV show Monk and it is filmed there. That is not the only reason, however. I saw the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz and spent time at Fisherman's Warf. It being August, I expected a warm summer day. That was not the case. The sunshine winked at me from time to time but it was windy, cold, and wet. Oh, did I mention the fog? No, well there was plenty of it. I still had a great time and would love to do it again. (Dressed more appropriately for the weather).

Driving on the Golden Gate Bridge.

Alcatraz!

Look out from the Golden Gate Bridge!

I had a drink on the second level with Manny! (I didn't forget about you).

For mom.

My mother was born to a farmer in Texas not so long ago. She had the good sense to marry my father and there are four of us. Her heart is large and her hands are always warm. She taught me how to be a good Southern girl and encouraged me to reach as high and far as my imagination would allow.

Ruby's (I love that name) birthday was earlier this month. She spent it in the hospital due to heart issues. Ironically they were very similar to the heart issues my husband had a few months ago. Our prayers were answered so she is doing well now. The hospital is located 45 minutes from my home so I was able to spend time with her on her special day.

I am writing this because she is coming to visit me today. She was recently laid off due to the economy so we are taking full advantage of our time. She is amazed that she is able to find my blog and posts via the internet.

Mom, Thanks for giving me life and teaching me the 'proper' way of doing things. I know you will appreciate the links. Click on the pictures.

Love,

Melodious!

Ps. I would have come to visit you any way!

Pirate Days in The Colony, TX. 2008 was a huge success. The festive atmosphere included- Music from local bands, food with flair, many vendors, sword fights, and Pirates from 'far, far away'. I was there to participate in the fundraiser for the Friends of The Colony Dog Park (non-profit organization).

Friday Morning Bitch Slap - Salty's

I recently returned from Seattle, WA. The trip was short but full of fun and activity. The locals are nice and very helpful. (When I visit from out of state that is the first thing I notice). The food, shopping, and sights were unmatched compared to other downtown areas I have visited within the US thus far. It is not a stretch to say it is my favorite. Not all was perfect, however.

After spending a long day chasing every tourist attraction I could find I decided to give my running shoes a rest. I wanted to experience the 'good life' for one night. After doing research on google I made reservations for a restaurant with very good reviews. Lucky for me it was located just a few miles from downtown. They indicated breathtaking panoramic views with an upscale atmosphere so I was really looking forward to it.

Upon arrival I was suddenly stricken with a feeling of dejavue (sp?). It looked like a scene from the movie 'As Good As It Gets'. Jack Nicholson was walking up the steps and Helen Hunt was sitting inside the bar. If I were a 'betting' person I would place money on it being filmed there. Perhaps I will watch that movie again to see if I am right. If not, it is very similar. I thought that was 'kinda' fun.

Being from out of town I miscalculated the drive. We were approximately thirty minutes early. (No traffic, go figure). It gave us time to tour the restaurant and compare what the reviews had to say. They were mostly dead on. There was jazzy live music playing in the lounge/bar. The setting was perfect for a romantic evening. It was a large open space with slightly dimmed lighting. I couldn't wait to 'belly up to the bar' and check out the menu. I ordered a pomegranate martini because it sounded good. It wasn't. Call me spoiled but it was nothing compared to what I have had. I am of the opinion if you are going to charge that much for a drink there should be more effort put into it than adding 'simple' syrup to vodka. My husband had a gin martini. He was happy but consider it was probably the second one he has had in his lifetime.

The seating was impressive to say the least. Large windows are across the back of the restaurant with views of downtown Seattle. It sits right on the water's edge. We probably got the best seats in the house. The lights reflecting off the water and views of the skyline were amazing!

The experience went down hill from there- I ordered wine. It was overpriced and awful. They should have been embarrassed to serve it. My husband asked, "So what about it do you not like?" When you take a small sip and the alcohol goes up your nose and makes you squint 'real hard' that is not a good sign. I asked the waitress to recommend one and described what I was looking for. She knew nothing about wine but recommended the 'house' wine. It was even worse. I wouldn't be complaining if I weren't spending so much...

Apparently the young waitress was overwhelmed by her work load. The four tables she was serving with a total of nine people was too much for her to handle. I was a waitress when I was younger so that irritated me. If we had been at Denny's I would not have given it a second thought. (No, I didn't work at Denny's).

By the time the appetizers arrived they were room temperature. You could tell they had been sitting around for a while. Maybe it wouldn't have been so bad if they hadn't been oysters. I was disappointed to say the least. It gets worse.

I wanted to really enjoy the experience so I ordered steak and lobster. It may have been a little 'over the top' but how many times will I be in Seattle? Why not enjoy it to the fullest? Texas is known for having good steaks so I will give them a break on not knowing how to cook one properly. However, the lobster was nothing to brag about either. My husband ordered the salmon. He said it wasn't as good as what I make at home. "Thanks Dear."

Overall it wasn't a horrible experience. The atmosphere was good and the company was great. But for the money I would recommend Ruth's Chris or Chamberlains in Texas.

I am writing this review for two reasons- 1) I want to give a realistic review of this restaurant in google searches. "No, puking rainbows here." 2) I told them I was going to.

My suggestion is to go there. Order a beer. Look out the window and enjoy the band.

The pics are not good quality but you get the idea.
