silverthorne: A Piece of History Becomes History - 10/04/07 04:53 PM
The Old Dillon Inn has closed its doors...for good. Apparently, after 140 years in business the ODI, as it's affectionately known by the locals, is history. The ODI has always had a place in Summit County history. Sometime in the 1800's the town of Dillon was established. They chose the spot where three rivers, the Blue, the Snake and Ten Mile, came together and built a trading post and a few other buildings. Over time the town grew and continued to survive until the Denver Water Board determined they needed water storage in the high country. The plans for the dam (5 comments)
silverthorne: Crossing the Continental Divide - 09/30/07 07:19 PM
Your journey to Summit County, if coming from Denver via I-70, will consist of crossing the Continental Divide through the Eisenhower Memorial Tunnel. For me & I expect for some of you, this is an experience in itself. I grew up outside of Kansas City. Going through a tunnel in KC is driving under a really wide bridge. The Eisenhower Tunnel is way more than that! The Eisenhower Tunnel is the highest vehicular tunnel in the world. The average elevation while traveling through the tunnel is 11,013 feet and it's nearly 1.7 miles long! Try holding your breath through this tunnel! It took 5 (6 comments)
silverthorne: Silverthorne welcomes DooWop Denny - 06/17/07 02:25 AM
DooWop Denny is performing again at the Silverthorne Pavilion at 7pm on June 29th and again August 31st. Denny does a Rockin' Oldies Dance Party, and everyone has a ball dancing to (and with) the oldies. Tickets are $12 in advance, $14 at the door. Two years ago we reserved several tables for our clients and had so much fun that last year we hired Denny for our private client party. Luckily, we anticipated that it could rain (Colorado in the summertime) and had it in the bandstand in the Historic Park in Frisco. We catered food and everyone had a wonderful time. silverthorne: Silverthorne, home to shopping, golf, and some great views! - 05/28/07 05:14 PM
Silverthorne began its life in the 1960s and 1970s as a place for the workers who were building the Eisenhower tunnel to live. According to the Colorado Department of Transportation website, the Eisenhower/Johnson Memorial Tunnels were designed as "twin bores". Construction on the first bore (North Tunnel) began March 15, 1968 and was completed five years later on March 8, 1973. This westbound bore was originally called the Straight Creek Tunnel, and later was officially named the Eisenhower Memorial Bore. Construction on the second bore (South Tunnel) began August 18, 1975 and was completed four years later on December 21, 1979. This eastbound (1 comments)
