FREEZING in Auburn, Alabama - 02/18/09 05:26 AM
The South is prone to long months of hot summers, but not freezing temperatures in its few months of winter! Temperatures of late have been as low as 18 degrees, compared to average lows in the 30's for this season. I happen to love winter scenes, and was elated to find these frozen images around town recently.
These icy sculptures were taken at The Flower Store in Ogletree Village in Auburn, and by a creek on Rockybrook Road in Opelika. The 3-tiered frozen fountain reminds me of a winter wedding cake!
Enjoying the coolness and the surprises before Spring...

The weight and feel of old coins in one’s hand is, to me, similar to that of a rare, out-of-print book--- you touch history and imagine the hands and hearts that held the stories. Local electrician, Lee Waller, had my full attention the other day when he pulled a couple of old coins out of his pocket and began telling me the story of how they came to be in his possession. SAVING HISTORICAL REAL ESTATE - Fire at Chicago Cathedral - 02/04/09 06:46 PM
Being a Chicago native (and growing up Irish-Catholic), I'm primarily attuned to news about this culturally rich city. I was sad to learn of the famous Holy Names Cathedral, caught in a burning blaze early this morning, that lasted about two hours. HOLY NAMES, which is attached to Xavier Ward K-8 School and located on State Street in the heart of downtown, is often called "where Chicago goes to pray." You won't believe what happened yesterday---it was like a dream! 
 
I live in a village development of apartment-style homes in Auburn, Alabama. One of the best things about my end unit is that I have a decent view of the lake, a much appreciated amenity when I’m working at my computer and able to enjoy the view.
 
Within a one-mile radius of where I live is a movie theatre, a shopping mall, a row of restaurants, some new subdivisions, a medical park and Lee Scott Academy.  This is anything but uncongested countryside!

TODAY THE WEATHER IS FURRY - Happy Groundhog Day! - 02/02/09 09:45 AM
'IF CANDLEMAS DAY IS BRIGHT AND CLEAR, THERE WILL BE TWO WINTERS IN THE YEAR.'
The legend of Groundhog Day stems from this Scottish verse.  In the late 1800's a man named Phil, in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, began predicting whether or not the winter was going to be long, or if spring would arrive early. This was all calculated on the actions of a groundhog emerging from his burrow on the second day of February, and looking for his shadow. If a shadow is seen, it means another six weeks of winter.
