There's going to be some great discussion over pizza (Luigi's) and beer (Rubicon).  Ron's going to share some of his vision for this emerging corner of Oak Park and has welcomed any and all to join in the discussion.

5 of the units for this project have already sold.  If you want to get a good look for yourself while connecting with other urban-minded folk, this is a great opportunity.

I'll be there and hope to see some of you as well.

Paying your utiliity bill in the City of Sacramento just got easier! The Department of Utilities recently launched its ExpressPay service to allow customers the ability to make one-time payment online.  Customers will receive a leaflet in their January bills explaining bill paymentoptions.  But I posted info below:

The City of Sacramento Department of Utilities has launched its new online bill payment option, ExpressPay. The ExpressPay system can be accessed from the Department's webpage and allows customers to make a one-time payment with their Visa, Mastercard, debit card or bank account number.

ExpressPay is the first online bill payment service offered by the City of Sacramento. The Department of Utilities also accepts payments over the phone, in person at 1395 35th Avenue and via AutoPay which automatically deducts money from a checking or savings account to pay monthly utility bills. More information about options for paying a City of Sacramento utility bill can be found at www.cityofsacramento.org/utilities or by calling 808-5454.

After the storms the beginning of this year it is a good idea to be prepared for the next one.  I have many clients who lost power for up to a week here in the City limits of Sacramento.  Take some time to think what you would do without power and or heat for a week.  My clients spent lots of time in internet cafes during the day but nights were cold without lights and electricity.  Those with gas stoves and water heaters faired better because they could still cook and take hot showers but not much else.

I am compiling a list of items that clients should have on hand for severe weather events including the possibility of having to evacuate if there is a flood.  In the meantime below is information from the City of Sacramento regarding severe winter events:

If you should experience any problems with sewers or storm drains,
contact the City Operator at 264-5011.  Operators are available 24
hours
a day, 7 days a week.

For information on what to do in the event of a power outage, or how to
be "storm ready", please visit the Emergency Services website at:
http://www.sacramentoready.org/index.htm.

For current updates of creek levels, check out: http://www.stormready.org/.

Free self-serving sandbag stations have been set up throughout
Sacramento.  The closest station is the Robertson Community Center,
located at 3525 Norwood Ave.  For a complete list of locations in the
City and County, visit the Emergency Services website (listed above).

The first case of west nile virus was confirmed in California last week.   Time for everyone to do their part to stop the proliferation of mosquitos.  Best way you can help, is to drain any standing water in your yards.  Make sure you store unused planting pots upside down and pour out any standing water you find elsewhere.  Make sure to check places that may get watered from sprinklers during the night.  Also if you know of any stagnant green pools in your area, let the Sacramento Yolo County Mosquito Vector control know by calling 916-685-1022 or visiting their website at www.fightthebite.org.

See the notice below from the Department of Health Services for more information.  K

STATE HEALTH OFFICER ANNOUNCES FIRST CONFIRMED HUMAN CASE OF WEST NILE VIRUS IN CALIFORNIA THIS YEAR

Jun 20, 2007

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SACRAMENTO - A 21-year-old Kern County woman has tested positive for West Nile virus (WNV) infection, the first reported human case in California this year, State Public Health Officer Dr. Mark Horton announced today. The woman's symptoms include fever, headache and body aches. She was not hospitalized.

"This first confirmed illness in California due to West Nile virus reminds us that we are moving into the high-risk season," Horton said. "The most important step people can take to prevent exposure to West Nile virus is to protect themselves from being bitten by a mosquito. We are also requesting the public to report dead birds to assist state and local agencies with surveillance efforts."

The positive test was reported to the Kern County Department of Public Health by a local blood bank where the patient had donated blood. She subsequently developed symptoms.

"Special precautions are taken to test all blood donations for West Nile virus, so Californians can be assured that blood supplies are safe," Horton said.

To date this year, WNV has been detected in 13 of California's 58 counties in 57 dead birds, 18 mosquito samples, two sentinel chickens and one horse. In 2006, a total of 278 human WNV cases, including seven deaths, were reported in the 46 of 54 counties that detected WNV activity.

WNV is transmitted to humans and animals through a mosquito bite from a mosquito that has been infected by feeding on an infected bird. Although the risk of serious illness to most people is low, less than 1 percent of individuals will develop a more serious illness.

Horton reminded Californians of three simple ways to protect themselves from WNV:

  • DEET - Apply inspect repellent containing DEET, picaradin or oil of lemon eucalyptus according to label instructions. Repellents keep the mosquitoes from biting you. DEET can be used safely on infants and children 2 months of age and older.

  • DAWN AND DUSK - Mosquitoes that carry WNV bite in the early morning and evening so it is important to wear repellent at this time. Make sure that your doors and windows have tight-fitting screens to keep out mosquitoes. Repair or replace screens with tears or holes.

  • DRAIN - Mosquitoes lay their eggs on standing water. Eliminate all sources of standing water on your property, including flower pots, old car tires, rain gutters and pet bowls. If you have a pond, use mosquito fish or commercially available products to eliminate mosquito larvae.

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has invested a total of $15 million over the last two years to enhance mosquito control efforts in California. This funding has supplemented the resources of existing mosquito control programs statewide and expanded efforts in areas of the state not covered to control WNV. This investment in equipment and other products to control mosquitoes continues to benefit mosquito control efforts this year.

For more information about WNV, visit www.westnile.ca.gov. In addition to reporting all dead birds, Californians are encouraged to report dead tree squirrels. The Web site includes information on the most common birds found with WNV. Dead birds and squirrels can be reported on the Web site or by calling (877) 968-2473.

In an ever continuing process to consolidate City Services and provide better customer service,  The City of Sacramento Parking Customer Service will move into City Hall...   Once again great work on better serving the public!  - K

Customers can obtain all services in one location beginning week of Monday, June 18

The customer service team for the City of Sacramento Department of Transportation's Parking Services division is relocating from 921 10th Street to the Revenue Department, Monday, June 18, to better serve customers out of City Hall at 915 I Street, first floor.

The move means a one-stop shop for citizens needing to obtain residential parking permits, validation coupons, meter reservations for bagging parking meters during construction and other parking transactions as well as pay for parking tickets. Currently, all those services, with the exception of citation payments are handled out of 921 10th Street .

New hours will be Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. People should be aware that Mondays and Fridays are busiest as are noon hours and the first of the month.

All staff within Revenue Services will be trained on how to process parking business transactions and the Parking Services team will be trained on how to process other Revenue-associated transactions such as business tax licenses, so the two will form one customer service team.
