arizona: Adobe Lightroom Magic - 12/14/09 06:47 PM

I took this photo just over 5 years ago and was never very happy with it.  The building and foreground were too dark and the canyon in the background was washed out.  So, I've just ignored it for 5 years.
Then, today, I was going through my old images and came across this one and started "playing" with it.  Photo software has improved immensely in the last few years and Adobe Lightroom wasn't even available at that time.  Of course Adobe Photoshop had the capability to improve this image - I just never took the time to jump through all … (15 comments)

arizona: HDR Image of Meteor Crater in Arizona - 10/23/09 11:45 AM

Photo © Mike Hendren, 2009

I was traveling through Arizona a few days ago - headed home after visiting my son and his wife in Phoenix. I took a little detour, just about 6 miles off I-40, near the eastern border of Arizona to visit the famous Meteor Crater.
It is truly impressive, especially when you consider it was caused by a direct hit from a relatively small meteor. The crater is about 550 feet deep and 4,000 feet across and was caused by a meteor not much bigger than a large house - only about 150 feet across. It's scary … (22 comments)

arizona: Opportunity = Preparation + Luck - 05/05/09 09:39 AM
A few years ago, I was in Monument Valley, Arizona, one crystal clear morning.  My goal was to get some photos of the famous rock formations, there.
As the light strengthened and threatened to end my "morning shoot", I saw this hot air balloon being filled and prepared for flight.  I felt very "lucky" to be there - just in time - to get out of my car, frame the scene, and rip off about a dozen shots as the balloon ascended into the still morning air.
The lighting was perfect, and the timing was just right - a few minutes … (20 comments)

arizona: Monument Valley, Arizona - Go There! - 04/16/09 07:15 PM

Monument Valley is the aptly named area in northeastern Arizona. These are just two of the magnificent formations that rise up from the desert floor, some reaching heights of 1,000 feet above the surrounding terrain.  They are beautiful at any time of day, but the best times are early morning or late evening, especially for photographers. They are not exactly in a convenient location but there is lodging available within a few miles.  This would make an excellent side trip while traveling between the Grand Canyon and Moab, for instance. In addition to gorgeous scenery, you just never know what … (6 comments)

arizona: Combining Images in Photoshop - 04/15/09 07:29 PM

Photoshop is an amazing piece of software.
One of the really cool things it can do is merge images in several ways.
Two possibilities are:
Merge to a panorama, or Merge into a composite. The panorama is very useful when you have a scene that is just too wide (or tall) for the lens you may have available.  So, you can shoot a series of images, overlapping them by about 20% or so and then through the magic of Photoshop, those images can be put together into a seamless panorama.  That is the technique I used for the photo of … (5 comments)
