w7: Windows 7 has shipped. - 10/21/09 03:33 AM
I got a notice from NewEgg today including a surprise invoice for $299.97.
"What the heck?!"  I couldn't recall a purchase, let alone for $300.  Phishing?  Scamming?  ID theft?
So I went to my NewEgg account, and there it was.  3 upgrades to Windows 7 Professional.
Great! I will have them by the end of the week and will start planning my changeover from W7 Release Candidate to W7 "For Real."  That will probably be a format and reload sometime over the Christmas-New Year's period.
W7 RC has been pretty good.  The most interesting difficult items have been related more to Internet Explorer 8 … (13 comments)

w7: Windows 7 PC's debuting early. Up to 10 days early. - 09/30/09 02:19 PM
Ars Technica reports that some system builders will offer Windows 7 computers earlier than October 22 General Availability, as early as October 13, with Microsoft blessing the early release.
That is great for folks who are eagerly waiting for the next MS operating system.
Of course, I am all for it.  I have mine, and I want a few more early adapter test pilots to run W7 through its paces.  I'm well into my third month, and enjoying it immensely.

w7: Windows 7 Compatibility Mode Saves My Bacon! And My Pocketbook, Too! - 09/04/09 10:44 PM
We have learned to fear Windows Upgrades due to the possibility we will have a legacy device that we will not be able to use due to lack of driver support. I thought I was there.  With a printer that would be expensive to replace.
I own a Dell 5100cn printer, an enterprise level printer designed for group environments and a 90,000 print/month duty cycle.  But Del ended support.  That wasn't an issue as long as I used Windows XP.  Although I never upgraded to Vista, I knew that Dell had provided Vista drivers for the 5100cn.  And Vista Drivers have worked very well … (9 comments)

w7: Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor: Can you run Windows 7 on your old machine? - 08/21/09 10:39 PM
Microsoft has provided a "Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor" to help you determine whether you can run W7 on your current computer.
You will download an .exe file and run it.  The Advisor will tell you what components are capable, what are not capable, and give you a list of components that you will need to update after W7 installation.
I have a Dell E1705 laptop with a "Windows Vista Capable" sticker, which I thought was bogus.  But it runs Windows 7 RC 32 bit quite well.
My new desktops have no issues.  I bought nice machines.
My older desktop, a P4 … (4 comments)

w7: So I loaded Windows 7 RC last month... - 08/21/09 04:07 AM
...on two new machines with a little help from a young feller named Chris.
So far, so good.  Very good.
I skipped over Vista, and came into Windows 7 RC straight from XP home and Pro.  Actually, I think I have never even sat at a Vista machine!
Gotta say, I'm loving it.  I was already running Internet Explorer 8 with no issues, so that part of the change was easy.
I suppose it is fast for me because it is on a new machine with almost nothing on the hard drive, but even at that, speed was not the only … (5 comments)
