Hickory NC Receives Environmental Award - 11/25/08 02:29 PM
Hickory was recognized at the North Carolina League of Municipalities annual conference in October for committing to efficient, energy-saving operations and practices. Hickory received the Level One achievement for the NCLM Green Challenge. Last summer the NCLM challenged municipalities state-wide to implement long-range and short-term actions that would conserve resources and save money. NCLM hopes such implementations will protect the environment and operating municipal government in a more cost-¬effective, energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly manner. To achieve Level One recognition, municipalities were required to complete three of five steps. The Hickory government is partnering with RainBarrel USA to offer residents a means to purchase rain barrels at wholesale prices as part of their continued effort to conserve water and implement stormwater management. Hickory government is not making a profit from the sale of these rain barrels. The manufacturer delivers the rain barrels to the Julian G.Whittener Municipal Building for residents to pick up. On November 18, 2008 Hickory Chair was presented the Sage Award for environmental responsibility and dedication to the environment, at a reception during the 2008 Sustainability Summit in Greensboro. The manufacturer received a $2,500 check from Cargill and was cited for its efforts to involve all of its employees in environmental stewardship. Some of Hickory Chair's current environmental practices include recycling everything from material used in furniture production such as fabric, leather, cotton and wood to everyday office items like aluminum cans, plastic bottles, ink toner and batteries. I have been using Wyke's Cleaners on 127 in Hickory for over a year now. I am very excited that they have embraced the eco friendly movement. They offer GREEN bags (a reusable dry cleaning bag - it switches from duffel bag to haul laundry to suit bag to bring home the garments) for your dry cleaning instead of the plastic dry cleaner bags. The holiday season in Hickory will officially begin when the new festive and illuminating Christmas decorations are officially turned on. Hickory Mayor Rudy Wright will turn on the "official light switch" on the Flag Court on Union Square. Begins at 5:30pm and will continue until 7:00pm. Mr. & Mrs. Claus will be at the entire event greeting kids of all ages. Between 5:30-6:30 local musicians Rick Cline and Nathan Hefner will play holiday music. This information was in a press release from Hickory NC Government. HICKORY - Merchants Distributors Inc. (MDI) announced an expansion to its Hickory facility in Caldwell County which will result in a $50.5 million investment resulting in 200 new jobs by 2014. MDI is a privately-owned wholesale grocery store distributor headquartered in Hickory. MDI supplies over 850 retail food stores with food and non-food items in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio, Florida, and Kentucky. I spent the week with a wonderful couple from New York and they kept commenting on how beautiful the weather was here in Hickory. They loved the warm weather and the beautiful fall colors on the trees. The autumn colors looked even better in the reflection of the lake. They were trying to pick an area in North Carolina to retire and had visited many different regions of our wonderful state.
