The Humane Society of Catawba County has joined forces with the American Kennel Club to provide more training and opportunities for the areas homeless dogs. Dogs adopted from Humane Society of Catawba County will go home with a registration in the American Kennel Club Canine Partners program. Certified yoga instructor Pradnya-Swati Bhende will offer a special free yoga class on Saturday, August 13, 2011 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library. The Hickory Creative & Performing Arts Center is trying to raise funds to help renovate their building. Teachers will be able to lease space at an affordable price. The plan is to offer classes in violin, guitar, bass, piano, drums, voice, theatre, creative writing, painting, crochet, knitting, sewing, and puppet making.
The Volunteer Center, a program of Catawba County United Way, is running its annual “Stuff the Bus” School Supply Drive between now and August 15th, 2011. The effort benefits students in all three school systems; Catawba County Schools, Hickory Public Schools and Newton-Conover City Schools. The items donated are sorted, counted and then distributed evenly to each system. Students in need are identified by guidance counselors and social workers in each school. Newton NC 2011 Pet Mania event is scheduled for Wednesday, August 17, at 7:00 p.m., on the Square in downtown Newton. The event, which is part of this year’s Soldiers Reunion line-up, is sponsored by the Newton Parks & Recreation Department. There will be seven categories in which to compete, with the winners from each category eligible for “Best of Show.”
The Newton NC 20th Annual 30-60-100 Mile Century Bike Ride is Sunday August 21 at 8:00 a.m. as part of the Soldiers Reunion events in Newton. The event begins with a mass start at the Newton Recreation Center. All bicycle rides will be conducted at each rider’s own pace, with three ride lengths mapped throughout Catawba County. Each ride offers scenery and hills for cyclists to enjoy.
The 2011 Soldiers Reunion Senior Citizens Dance for those ages 55 and older is set for Thursday August 11 from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on the lower level of the Newton Recreation Center.
