The Humane Society of Catawba County has joined forces with the American Kennel Club to provide more training and opportunities for the areas homeless dogs.
Dogs adopted from Humane Society of Catawba County will go home with a registration in the American Kennel Club Canine Partners program. The Canine Partners program enables mixed-breeds and purebreds “without papers” to enjoy American Kennel Club benefits and compete in American Kennel Club events, including agility and rally trials.

Certified yoga instructor Pradnya-Swati Bhende will offer a special free yoga class on Saturday, August 13, 2011 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library.
The class is geared toward couples, friends, siblings or even the whole family. Anyone ages 5 and up is welcome and no prior yoga experience is necessary. Catawba County: 2011 Stuff The Bus School Supply Drive - 07/29/11 09:39 PM

 
The Volunteer Center, a program of Catawba County United Way, is running its annual “Stuff the Bus” School Supply Drive between now and August 15th, 2011.
The effort benefits students in all three school systems; Catawba County Schools, Hickory Public Schools and Newton-Conover City Schools.
The items donated are sorted, counted and then distributed evenly to each system. Students in need are identified by guidance counselors and social workers in each school. Residents are encouraged to purchase school supplies and take them to one of the drop off sites listed below.

The Newton NC 21stAnnual Soldiers Reunion 5K Run/Walk is Saturday, August 20, 2011 beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the Newton Recreation Center.  It is a one-mile fun run is slated to begin prior to the 5K run at 8:00 a.m.
Trophies will be given to the top three male and female finishers in the 5K overall, as well as in each age division, with awards presented for first place in each age division for the one-mile fun run. Each participant will receive a t-shirt.

The new, exciting “Quick Start Tennis” is being played daily at the Hickory Foundation YMCA.
Players ages 10 and under use lower-bouncing balls, and lighter, smaller rackets.
Players ages 8 and under play on 36’ courts and players aged 9 & 10 play on 60’ courts.

This year is the 122nd anniversary of the Soldiers Reunion in Newton. Sponsored by the Newton Merchants Association and American Legion Post 16, the week-long celebration is believed to be the longest-running patriotic celebration not based on a holiday in the entire country. This year’s theme is “Saluting Our Heroes.”
Sunday August 14, 2011 Reunion Week begins with a “Cruisin’ and Car Show” on  in downtown Newton. Cars and trucks from 1972 and earlier will cruise the city streets beginning at 6:30 p.m.
