The Minetta Lane Center for Arts and Peace is seeking artists of all ages for the upcoming exhibition, “Reflections on Peace and Peacemakers,” to coincide with World Peace Day, Wednesday September 21, 2011. On Monday August 29, 2011 Humane Society of Catawba County will hold the 10th Annual Bud Lofland Memorial Golf Tournament fundraiser, held at Rock Barn Golf and Spa. Humane Society of Catawba County does not receive any tax dollars, government funding or support from national humane organizations. By either playing in the tournament or by becoming a sponsorship, the proceeds allow HSCC to continue its mission: saving animal lives and providing permanent homes through adoption. The City of Hickory will be holding a 9-11 Remembrance Ceremony on Sunday, September 11, 2011 in Downtown Hickory at 4 p.m. WHKY 1290 am First Talk program host Hal Row will emcee the ceremony and U.S. Rep. Patrick McHenry will give the memorial address. Additional participants include Mayor Wright, Reverend David Roberts from Morning Star Baptist Church, Hickory High School Band, and the Exodus Choir.

Hickory citizens are invited to participate in the Neighborhood College program. The Neighborhood College is a series of professionally led classes designed to teach citizens about the City of Hickory and the services it provides. The class is an educational experience that will give participants insight into how the city operates on a day to day basis, as well as how it plans for the future. This will be the city’s 13th class, and in the past 12 years almost 250 citizens have graduated from the course and many of the graduates are now leaders in their neighborhood and/or (0 comments)

Catawba Science Center in Hickory presents an end-of-summer blowout with a special weekend of science demonstrations Saturday, August 20 and Sunday, August 21, 2011. Demonstrations will get started at 2 p.m. both days. Blast Off Make your own two-liter bottle rocket, experiment with soda geysers and learn fun facts about rocket science during Saturday’s demonstration – Blast Off. Activities will start in the Inventor’s Workshop and move to the Arts & Science Center North Lawn where visitors can prepare for lift off and let the soda spew.
