The new Village Inn Pizza location at 2467 Springs Road, NE, is planning to open in early May. The new location will be about 2,000 square feet and will have a dining room with seating for about 65 to 70 diners.
One of the best features of the new location is a 6-foot by 24-foot mural depicting the two Hickory VIP locations destroyed by arson in January.
The Village Inn Pizza on 127, that burned on Jan. 25 will be repaired and restored. The goal is to have it open it for business within a year.

One of the most common complaints about Hickory is that the streets are confusing and it is tough to find your way around town. The good news is that we are one step closer to making it easier.
The Hickory City Council voted 4-3 to approve a contract with Frasier Associates to develop an updated logo for the city and develop a wayfinding plan that will incorporate the new logo on strategically located signs that will guide travelers to and from Hickory's various businesses and points of interest.

The Hickory government website has been given an update in make it easier to navigate and more user-friendly.
According to an article in the Hickory Daily record, Hickory citizens continue to increase their use of the website. In 2008 the website had more than 425,000 visits. Many visitors look for local information, news updates or pay utility bills. There's still information on Hickory's website about its departments and events. There is also an enhanced news center section that includes city publications and news releases. Everyone is invited downtown to Union Square, tonight from 5:30 - 7:30 to shop and visit the wonderful shops that are decorated for Christmas. This evening is sponsored by the Downtown Hickory Development Association. They will be hosting this event again on Thursday December 18.
Events will include: wagon rides around Union Square sponsored by BB&T, Suzuki School of the Arts adult ensemble performing inside Shoppes on the Square, interactive motor skills development through a fun obstacle course sponsored by the Little Gym, carolers, and of course Santa will be there.

The yearly drudgery of getting rid of the leaves that have fallen on your yard has begun. Hickory is asking that homeowners rake all of their leaves to the curb before the first collection day of your quadrant. Remember to keep leaves away from storm drains and out of the streets to help prevent flooding and accidents during rain. It is not good for our storm water system to be overwhelmed with leaves because it can deplete the oxygen in our lakes and streams as they decay. Hickory was recognized at the North Carolina League of Municipalities annual conference in October for committing to efficient, energy-saving operations and practices. Hickory received the Level One achievement for the NCLM Green Challenge. Last summer the NCLM challenged municipalities state-wide to implement long-range and short-term actions that would conserve resources and save money.
NCLM hopes such implementations will protect the environment and operating municipal government in a more cost-¬effective, energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly manner. To achieve Level One recognition, municipalities were required to complete three of five steps. Hickory had already completed four of the five steps, including:
