Governor Andrew Cuomo's state budget proposal for 2012-2013 eliminates a pair of programs that directly impact urban neighborhoods.
Cuomo's plan cuts funding for the state's Rural and Neighborhood Preservation Programs grants, which partially fund neighborhood groups like the South Wedge Planning Committee, Group 14621, North East Area Development, and South East Area Coalition. The budget also creates a new Foreclosure Relief Unit within the Department of Financial Services, seemingly at the expense of foreclosure legal assistance programs.

The area’s largest employers registered 20,340 workers on December 31, 2011. According to abc wham's Rachal Barhart "The U of R’s impact on the regional economy goes far beyond its own payroll. A 2010 Center for Governmental Research study says the college is responsible for 47,000 direct and indirect jobs, which pay $2.3 billion in wages. The U of R’s challenges as it grows will be to maintain funding levels and manage infrastructure. The Route 390 Interchange project begins to address some of the needs regarding access to campus."

In an article written in the Democrat and Chronicle in late December the typical American household will have spent $4,155 filling up in 2011, a record.
According to the D&C in 2011, gasoline prices in the Rochester NY area never got within 15 cents a gallon of the all-time high for regular $4.25 that was hit in the summer of 2008. But neither have prices stayed so far above $3 as long as they have this year.  $4155, is 8.4 percent of what the median family in Rochester NY takes in per household, the highest share since 1981.
