barrie real estate: Real Estate commissions vs a weekly paycheck - 01/27/14 01:56 AM

The weekly paycheque or the commission check, which is better?     Realtor's are overpaid for what we do. I am reminded of this often. One of the things that enticed me as it does many others to the business was those fat commission cheques I heard about.

Let's take a look at how money flows in the business of Real Estate compared to most businesses where employees receive a pay cheque at the end of each week. That pay cheque most receive as a salaried or by-the-hour employee is their portion of profits generated after all of the expenses incurred in generating … (99 comments)

barrie real estate: An off centred look back at 2013 - 12/28/13 02:51 AM

Controversy sells. While this isn't  a fresh, or untested notion by any means, I think 2013 will come to be remembered as the year it became accepted as a bona fide and deliberate marketing tool to get and hold our attention. Many qualifying controversies seemed to appear one right after the other in 2013.
A significant portion of us like to see people succeed yet there is a far more devouring and seemingly growing apatite out there for watching our more accomplished members of society overstep the lines and or get busted on it. Call it car crash syndrome and it is significant enough … (10 comments)

barrie real estate: How will Barrie look 20 years from now? - 10/21/13 03:56 AM

Are there incentives for one to move a family from a large metropolitan environment like Toronto, to a more rural setting like Barrie Ontario?

For my parents and many others back in the early 70's when Barrie had a mere 30,000 population, that incentive was comparatively affordable housing.
For my father, driving north from the big city to the under construction Holiday Inn in Barrie was a daily contrast for six months between a bustling city with horizons hash-marked by industrial smoke stacks and Barrie's unfetid sunsets where the tempo of living was more self determined. Incentives that … (0 comments)

barrie real estate: Renter to Buyer - Realizing the goal of owning a home - 09/04/13 01:39 AM

I see so many who want to own a home who earn enough household income to carry a home, yet that down payment requirement keeps them renting, often for years and years. If you are renting a home you are already in effect paying a mortgage, just not your own. You are also putting some extra cash each month into someone else's pocket while their property increases in value each year on your investment.
Without taking some active steps to change from home renter to home owner, one year leads into the next and the opportunity in many cases … (0 comments)

barrie real estate: Talking homes at the Canadian Real Estate Association AGM - 03/28/13 05:35 AM
The Canadian Real Estate Association's Annual general meeting was held in Ottawa this past weekend. I don't think you can gain a more front line, up to the minute, sense of the health and direction of the housing industry from one end of Canada to the other than by spending 3 days with more than 300 front line troops from literally every inhabitible part of the country.

To summarize the many dozens of conversations I had with representatives from this countries real estate boards, I can say that the activity in each of their respective markets attests to the fact that Canadians are still actively buying … (1 comments)

barrie real estate: Barrie's future growth will continue to come from GTA escapees. - 03/16/13 05:12 AM

Toronto recently surpassed Chicago taking on the title as being North America's fourth most populous city.
Already the largest city in Canada, Toronto's new population estimate is 2.79 million — beating Chicago's 2.7 million people. The numbers do not include the surrounding metropolitan areas (Vaughn, Mississauga, Brampton, Markham etc.) which more than double that number again. While the number of inhabitants has doubled in the past 50 years, Toronto has not seen a major inter city transit or roadway expansion in that time.
Toronto City Council boasted the city's new ranking in their annual Economic Dashboard summary. The report added that Toronto's … (0 comments)

barrie real estate: Comparing Canadian House (real cost) Prices - 03/14/13 04:58 AM

I try to avoid starting stories with "Back in the day" or  "I remember when", because I remember when back in the day people who talked like that sounded like old farts to me. If you were around to watch the first moon landing as I was, albeit I was very young at the time, there is no escaping the use of these catch phrases now and again to make a point.
That same year Neil Armstrong uttered those historic words from the moon (1969), my parents took delivery of a shiny new washer and dryer set. When the Eaton's delivery truck pulled in … (1 comments)

barrie real estate: Municipal land transfer taxes - just one more obstacle to future home ownership - 01/24/13 06:10 AM

Having to find additional ways to generate new revenue streams is where many Ontario municipalities, including our own, find themselves as they attempt to balance the books in 2013. Unfortunatly, homeowners are typically the principle targets turned to for additional revenues when the well runs dry.
The following letter from the assistant director of public relation for the Ontario Real Estate Association outlines how municiple land transfer taxes are being considered as one possible revenue generating action home owners in various Ontario municipalities may face in the near future. Such a tax could further inflate local home prices … (0 comments)

barrie real estate: 2013 Barrie Real Estate Market - 01/22/13 08:32 AM

What Kind of real estate market is Barrie in for in 2013?

I hosted open-houses each weekend so far in 2013. Mid winter open-houses in Barrie, for those determined enough to host them, typically provide the solitude for a Realtor to catch up on some paperwork or get in some reading. I have set up my signs in the middle of winter whiteouts recently fully expecting the next two hours were going to be a snore. Not so far this year.
Instead I find myself literally on my feet talking with visitors the whole time. Much of that time … (0 comments)
