Windmills - 05/27/08 11:30 PM
You know, I want one of these really badly!

We live on a hill where the breeze is always blowing.  I would like a cheaper water source, one that I can use to water our yard and gardens, and with out an increase in electric bill to pump it out of the ground. So I found out there is still a dealer in San Angelo, Texas! I was surprised.
Now the cost including drilling the well will be around $10,000 without a holding tank.. Does anyone know if that is reasonable?
Have a prosperous week!

Don't You Just Love Homes With Character? - 05/27/08 09:40 PM
I love homes with Character.  A home does not have to be expensive or necessarily any particular style to have character. And let's be clear .....character  is not the same as style.  And not unlike individual people, some homes have got it and others simply don't come close.
Today while waiting for a client to come view an interesting little investment home in Bryan,  Texas , I found  out I was 30 minutes early, so I decided to just look it over and keep an open mind. This was a simple 50's masonry block home with steel framed casement windows and it rested on two lots with … (12 comments)

Is This Even Possible? That Darn Parrot! - 05/26/08 04:47 PM
It has been a while since I have posted anything about Peepers our African Grey parrot. Anyone who has ever owned an African Grey knows all to well they are real "rascals."  Besides having a pretty large vocabulary our Mr. Peepers, is  a great musician, and about half  prankster too. I know he does a lot of what he does for attention, but what is occurring now has got to take the cake!
Now everyone knows parrots mimic. They mimic noise. Peepers mimics everything from our phone conversations to the beep made by the phone when you are dialing a number, to the beeping … (28 comments)

How to get Rich....Will You Buy This Bridge? - 05/26/08 12:14 AM
In reading Charles McDonald's post about "Bottom Feeders", http://activerain.com/blogsview/518975/Bottom-Feeders......  I was reminded about the late night " How to Get Rich in Real Estate" shows.  Often they feature an interview  with a middle aged average couple, lounging in  the backyard of their second home in Hawaii or Tahiti.  In their past life they were struggling at hourly dead-end jobs. Then one night while sleeplessly tossing and turning , worried about their electric bill and college funds, they by chance turned on the TV  and there was that couple in Hawaii, and suddenly by some kind of miracle and within a year from that night they … (9 comments)

Can You Identify This Tree? - 05/25/08 10:16 PM
Do you recognize this tree?
They are all over East and Central Texas and are usually found planted alongside most older homes on old farms. Often times they and other unusual trees like Catalpa trees are all that is left to identify an old homesite. They bloom prolifically and have large seed "pods" later in the season. They add nice texture and color  to a landscape and garden if there is room for them.  Do you know the name?

Only in Texas.........Cool Country Street Signs # 2 - 05/25/08 09:09 AM
This is the second post about Cool Country Street Signs. The first one was a few weeks ago and featured an old Oak Tree. I had forgotenabout  this sign which I pass everyday going to and from work.. It has always been one of my favorite homemade street signs for sure. It is becoming a little worn, and the county has put up a modern regular county sign (Boring) just a few feet away ...but I still like this one way more! It is located at the intersection of Jack Rabbit Lane and FM 2549 in Robertson County, Texas a few miles south east of Hearne, … (14 comments)

Are the fruits of Your Labor Dissappearing to Knomes or Unknowns? - 05/24/08 12:06 AM

Nothing can be more frustrating than for a very experienced succesful agent to lose a prospective listing to a brand new agent or a part time unknown agent.   Now ,  we all began our careers at one time and we all  had to learn how to scrap for a listing. Competition can be tough in the real estate business.  Experienced agents sometimes become complacent, and often assume they will get the listing.  I have made this mistake. It is absolutely necessary no matter how many years we have under our belt, that when working up a listing proposal that  we honestly take the time … (7 comments)

Approaching 90! Should I slow down? - 05/21/08 10:52 PM
While reading and working on Active Rain tonight I  noticed I was just a tad under 90,000 points. It seems like yesterday I was at Zero.     Time really flies when your having fun!  I am so amazed at some of the top bloggers here on AR.  Not only do they turn out volumes of postings and comments on others, but they offer really helpful information. Just about everything you need to know about Real Estate and related businesses can be located on Active Rain.  I just hope some of what I have submitted can be helpful to others also.

Everything is Normal! - 05/21/08 09:19 PM
Whenever things get hectic around the office, or newer agents stress out over the ...unexpected , I usually  tend think back to the Floyd Wickman training I went through years ago .  Whenever things got tough for Floyd, he would casually reply "Hot dog, everythings's normal!"
You know this statement has helped guide me through some pretty rough transactions through the years. And I have tried to relay the simplicity of this statement to newer agents. Basically I think what Floyd ment... is that it does no good for either we as agents, or for our clients to be stressed out over difficulties that … (7 comments)

Only in Texas! - 05/20/08 12:02 PM

While trying to locate a listing this morning in a very  rural location I ran across this street sign on a dirt road. The sign post is a narly old oak tree in the middle of the road and a black and tan coon hound was also lying in the middle of the road by the tree... I guess I woke him from his morning nap !   Ah... the suthurn country  life ...it sure is great.   Do Da... Do Da!  I finnaly located the property I was looking for , but half the fun is always in the getting there isn't … (8 comments)

Lake Limestone Texas Where our Family Relaxes - 05/19/08 10:06 PM

One of  our favorite places to spend a day or two and just escape the rat race, is at our family place on Lake Limestone in central Texas. The lake is a Brazos River Authority goverened lake, and all of the property on the lake is private, except for a few public accesses and  small parks. The lake is fed by the Navasota River.  In about 1978 our firm developed a subdivision on the lake known as Summerplace, and we built a weekend home for the entire family to enjoy in about 1984.

Since that time, we  have had many fun days … (14 comments)

Best BBQ in Texas! - 05/15/08 11:59 PM
Martin's BBQ,   in Bryan,  ......... Texas a Texas Tradition since 1925!    Now A Historical landmark.

I don't know what is the oldest BBQ business in Texas ,  but I do know one of the oldest, best tasting,  and most charming BBQ restaurants has definitely definitely got to be Martin's in Bryan , Texas.  It represents a  totally different era . When you enter the restaurant  you know you are crossing a time and space configuration.  I can't tell you when the first time I went to Martin's but I believe it was in the 1960's when we took a turkey in … (35 comments)

The Corn Culture, Gas Prices, and Going Naked - 05/14/08 09:29 PM
In our geograpical area of Texas, Cotton has been King since the mid 1800's.  The Brazos River valley soils are so rich and suited for cotton, that many say they closely compare to those in the Nile River Valley in Egypt, home of course to the famous Egyptian cotton.   Typically this time of year the farmers here have planted  thousands of acres in cotton......... well up until now.  If you take a ride through what usually is cotton fields you will soon discover that much space is now taken up by Corn.
The Corn Culture has crept into our little valley and I am concerned where it all may … (14 comments)

Is This Centerfold Material or What? - 05/13/08 11:44 PM

A while back I did a post about the "Scottish Fold" Cat I  discovered and adopted from the local shelter and how he was really different. Well he as been here for about a month and is adapting well and made friends with our other cats.  He is haveing to learn cat basics like fear of dogs, climbing trees, and other typical things well rounded cats do in the country, but Mac the Scottish cat is coming along just fine. We do allow him lots of house privaledges and he has been pretty well behaved in that regard.

Investing in College Station Texas Real Estate - 05/12/08 10:25 PM
Our real estate statistics for the month of March in this area indicate a continued stable market. Basically the numbers  were about the same as last year's month of March. Investors like that.  We are seeing an increase in the number of contacts from investors in other states which are currently in severe downturns. I assume they are simply pulling out of those areas and seeking stability.
Will our communities remain relatively stable? I certainly hope so. I don't feel we are overbuilt to any extreme in any category, as many of the local home builders put self induced constraints on themselves beginning last … (5 comments)

Help The Walls Are Shaking! - 05/12/08 10:00 PM
This week the seismic survery crews have been doing what they get paid to do in the local area around our home. They have been setting off charges and taking their seismic readings, all a necessary part in the exploration of domestic oil and gas. Lord knows I am for  focusing  our primary efforts domestically in this search..  But this exploration in our neighborhood is getting a little close for comfort. Last Friday my wife called and all the somoke detectors where going off in the house, without the presence of smoke and they came on and went off all day long. … (2 comments)

Floortime is Important Also - 05/11/08 08:27 AM
I guess because I am a broker-owner, I have a little bit different view of floortime than a lot of agents, but It may be because owners are a little like shopkeepers, they have to man the store whenever the folks that work there don't show up.   I can't tell you all the excuses I have heard through out the years as to why an individual didn't show for floortime. Those excuses rival those received from students who failed to do their homework. Now please know it is not mandantory in our office, but  rather is on a volunteer basis.  However, if an agent agrees to … (11 comments)

Love Those City Council Meetings - 05/09/08 11:38 PM
Well... I really enjoy going to city council meetings in our area from time to time.   As a member of our Realtors Association's governmental affairs  committee, I find that it goes with the job description to attend a few of these meetings.    Both  the cities of Bryan and College Station and their politics have become increasingly interesting over the last few years. These meetings can now  be tuned into on local TV...but nothing compares to ringside seats when the  verbal punches begin to get thrown by either the members of council, their staff, or the citizenry.  Sometimes it can get really interesting... paticularly if any knock … (2 comments)

Helicopters Aren't Cheap! Neither is Gas. - 05/07/08 11:20 PM
All week long we have had helicopters flying back and forth over our home. They are hauling large bags of cable for seismographic surveys being conducted in the neighborhood for petroleum and natural gas. Many of these surveys are in densely wooded areas and apparently it is much easier to haul them with choppers as opposed to 4 wheelers.
Today I asked someone about the cost and if they charged by the hour or miles traveled and he just laughed and said "oh no." I said "well how then?" He replied it is by the trip. and then said $1,000 per trip. Now … (3 comments)

Citizen Journalist Reports on Bush Library Famous Guest - 05/06/08 10:54 PM
My wife and I are pretty average people. Well I am average. She is way better looking than me. But when I say average I mean socially. We are in a University town and enjoy many benefits including the privilege of attending the different lecture series held at the Bush Presidential Library. I guess we really enjoy these events even though we may appear to be slightly out of place. There are lots of silver headed, retired alumni and a few professors and students that show up. And the speakers are diverse . A couple of weeks ago we heard Bobby Knight the basketball … (4 comments)

Vote For Reason in College Station Texas! - 05/05/08 10:30 PM
The elections for council positions in College Stataion Texas are so critical this year. If you are a citizen...please vote and please use reason when selecting the candidates you wish to vote on. The future of College Station Texas is at stake. If you are for less governmental control, and wish to see College Station continue to prosper and be a magnet for business......you must go with Scoti, Dictson, and Gay. These cadidates are pro-property rights and will all work to push for continued cooperation with builders, developers, and agents. The alternative candidates paint a bleak picture for continued progressive growth … (3 comments)

First Friday in Downtown Bryan - 05/03/08 04:06 PM
The first Friday of every month is a festive time in downtown Bryan, Texas. We haven't been to it in a while, and decided to go last night and catch some Mexican food with another couple and then ejoy "First Friday." The food was great and then we hit the streets. Every First Friday the retail shops stay open late for shoppers and sometimes offer snacks or other treats.  A new art shop was celebrating last night and had a live jazz band along with several artists, patrons of the arts and ordinary folks like us. The best thing we enjoy is … (4 comments)
