Old Library In Franklin Texas - 04/29/09 12:10 AM
Located on Hwy 79 in Franklin , Texas .....the old Carnegie Library certainly is reminiscent of days gone by in small towns across the USA.  This library was built in 1913 and is still serving as a library after all those years. Of 31 Carnegie Libraries built in Texas...only 5 still serve as libraries and this is one of them. The basement of the building however has served in the past  as classrooms for elementary students, a dressing room for sports teams from the local high school, and domicile for the superintendent of schools.

Stressed Wood Floors Are Popular - 04/24/09 01:14 PM
Stressed wood floors are really becoming a hit with new home buyers these days and are a great item to consider when remodeling an existing home . These type wood floors offer an exstremely rich, yet weathered look and  they remind me of floors you might see in a 200 year old home in England or Germany.

Additionally because stressed wood floors  are full of "intentional defects"  like scratches, dings, dents, etc. they don't really show the defects that a glossy waxed wood floor might show.  I have always felt if you added a new scratch by accident you could just touch it up with … (17 comments)

April Showers Bring Flowers And Cash Too! - 04/21/09 10:52 PM
Does money Grow on Trees?  Nope but in a sense it grows on flowers!
Well it finally rained in our part of Texas!! Thank the Lord ! Ibelieve we have had about 5 1/2 inches in the last week or so between the towns of Hearne and Franklin. and it is no understatement to say it was sorely needed. Here's a little taste of all my wife's hours , TLC , and lots of weed pulling.  I don't mind pruning , hauling , fertilizing etc....but just don't like pulling weeds.  We just love it when everything starts to bloom here in Robertson County, Texas. It is … (7 comments)

An F is an F.....Isn't it? - 04/14/09 11:30 AM
When I was growing up we had to contend with the standard grading system in public schools.
  A = Excellent         B = Very Good     C = Average    D = Barely Passing   F = Failing

Recently even in Texas there has been a move to do entirely away with " F  "or for that matter any failing grade at all.  In fact some would like nothing lower than a "C" or "Average."
I  and many others have serious concerns about this "New" methodology of grading and what message it might send to the current generation.   But isn't thisalso symptomatic of a larger move … (20 comments)

Psychic Real Estate Agents - 04/13/09 10:26 PM
Some folks just communicate better than others.  Do you think that they have some kind of special abilities?
Doesn't matter if you are selling homes or peanuts.  I am amazed at the "seemingly" innate ability of some newer agents seem to have and at the same time confounded by others that just don't seem to ever really  "get it"  no matter how much training they may receive.   This innate ability to communicate well and sell well,  in my humble opinion doesn't have anything to do with any special psychic powers either.

I believe insead that  "getting it" really has more to … (15 comments)

Don't Mess With Texas Trash Off - 04/12/09 01:08 AM
Last weekend in an effort to make a dent in our local litter bugs' mess, Keep Brazos Beautiful, a local non- profit organization that focuses on keeping the community clean and beautiful, held a local event as part of the 9th annual "Don't Mess With Texas Trash Off" .  I was invited to help through the Aggieland Rotary Club which I had joined in January this year.
The event seemed to be a big success. Our group concentrated on the area around North Gate area, by Texas A and M University in College Station, near where many of the local taverns and clubs are located.  Surprisingly even though we picked … (6 comments)

The Dog That Caught The Fire Truck - 04/10/09 10:49 PM
That is how a news commentator recently described our President and the way he is  actingnot acting, by remaining silent about the piracy off Somalia, and the taking of the ship's captain.   It seems to me our President should speak out on this.
Does his silence on this incident speak volumes.....or does it simply reflect on his lack of diplomatic  knowledge and experience with foreign affairs and crisis?  This all  raises the question about how he will act when faced with much more serious incidents like say another 9-11,  or perhaps even an accidental missle launch.
This President got what he asked for  when he won the Presidency. He … (5 comments)

Realtors Involved in Government - 04/07/09 11:53 PM
Our local Association of Realtors Governmental affairs committee had a " Meet The Candidates" event tonight at a local hotel in College Station. Two city council positions are open. The format was simple enough with a local Realtor acting as the moderator asking each candidate some very simple but pointed questions. The issues in those questions were focused on city growth and development, and property rights.  There are two incumbents and several opponents at this time.
College Station is currently going through a great deal of growing pains and the local Realtors realize how important this upcoming election is going to be in dealing … (9 comments)

Another Great Texas Courthouse - 04/06/09 10:11 PM
I just love old county courthouses. They have great charm. This handsome building is located on the town square in the heart of Franklin, Texas and  is the Robertson County Courthouse.  It was built in 1883 and is in the Second Empire Style.  It is made of Austin llimestone and is listed on the National register. Franklin, Texas is located on Hwy 79 , and the area is currently experiencing a natural gas boom, which has been a terrific boost to the economy of a sparsely populated, but beautiful county .  It is a short drive to the cities of Hearne  , and Bryan-College Station , … (14 comments)

Forget-Me Nots In Texas - 04/05/09 11:11 PM
In Texas this time of year you can find an abunbdance of wildflowers almost anywhere you travel. In Robertson County there are plenty to enjoy along the roads and highways including the standard bearer Bluebonnets and Paintbrushes.
But one of my favorites are  the Forget-Me -Nots.

Quite a few can be seen along several stretches of FM 2549 between Hwy 6 and Hwy 79, near Franklin and Hearne.   Noted in the past by Texas Monthly Magazine  as one of the prettiest highways in the state, it is well worth the visit to enjoy the flowers and the scenery along this Farm to Market highway.  … (7 comments)
