pets: Meet One Of My Best Friends - 03/13/10 08:56 PM
This Is Mr. Peepers. He is an African Grey Parrot and has made an appearance on Active Rain before. Our day is made brighter fom sun up until bedtime because of this loudmouth chatterbox. His current vocabulary is pushing about `100 words and sentances, with only one for certain bad word. He also is an extraordianary musician. He is a beautiful whistler and can handle Mozart or Hendrix...often times combining them! He is a very happy bird. Each morning he tells my wife " You are soooo cute!" and the frst words I hear are "Do you want a peanut.?" He has an

pets: What Do Old Men and Cats have In Common? - 08/24/09 11:25 PM
Hairy Ears and lots of whiskers of corse! Duh. Mack the cat has always had hairy ears and when we play I like to tickle them which aggravates him just a little. Scottish Fold cats like Mack have very tiny ears, a breed trait...so I suppose the hair seems to stand out a little more than in other breeds. Regardless Mack could care less as long as breakfast is served promptly and he gets a tiny bit of milk at night before retiring. Mack was a great find at our local shelter. Before you spend a lot on a pure bred...go

pets: Meooowmerry Christmas From Mack the Cat - 12/22/08 09:42 PM
Of all the cats we have ever owned I have to say that Mack, our Scottish Fold cat has got to be the most laid back of all. Mack is so accommodating that he actually puts up with his two ridiculous owners that do crazy silly things to him.... like put a wreath around his neck and then ask him to pose for Christmas photographs. (I can only imagine what he was thinking at the time.) Mack puts up with 3 dogs barking at him, and 2 pet birds heckling including our parrot who might call out Mack's name 50 times in

pets: Dump Kitties - 09/01/08 09:11 AM
No we didn't find these kitties at the city dump. They were dumped on us my a non-caring heartless individual who assumes that he or she can just randomly drop off an animal at the driveway of a rural home. If they must do it why do they choose a rural home? A kitten in more likely to become breakfast for a coyote where we live than find happiness. This is not the first time this has happened to us. The saddest part is that the animal when dumped will usually hang tight to the spot where the former idiot owner dumped it. It

pets: Remember Our Wildlife and Pets Get Hot too! Take Care of Them. - 08/08/08 01:00 AM
As I was pondering what to write about on cooling off and beating the heat in Texas...it dawned on me that wildlife and pets really have it tough! We have had some days at 105 degrees already this summer and with high humidity. Not many animals have the luxury of being able to just go inside when they are pooped from the heat like we can. Well at least most can't. I know there are lots of Flluffys and Puffy's out there that never have stepped over the threshold to leave the air conditioned castles they live in, but many pets do stay outside a

pets: Where is all the Cat Food Going? - 07/26/08 11:40 PM
Well, we currently have 4 cats , 3 dogs, and 2 birds...at least at last count. Now you can imagine what the feed bill is around our home. Recently I noticed the cat food bowl has been emptying out quicker than normal and in the past it was due to a stray cat, who finally adopted us . Well I heard a noise at the back door last week and got out of bed and discovered the source of the noise and the disappearing cat food. Sorry for the poor photo. It was taken through glass with a flash at night. Have

pets: Hungry Birds and Hungrier Cats. - 07/05/08 11:52 PM
We have a nest of swallows on our back porch. We finally gave up trying to run them off so we lost again this year. They managed to build it and did so where we can watch the baby birds grow from our bedroom. We can actually lie in bed and observe them growing daily.. Amazing how quickly the grow. There are three altogether and they have gotten so big they have to take turns sitting on top of one another. And all they do is eat all day long. Pretty soon they are going to fall out or try to fly. I have

pets: He Is Finally A Cat - 07/01/08 11:04 PM
We have cats. Four to be precise. And I believe there are 3 things a cat should absolutely be able to do to really be a full fledged cat. Know to run away from dogs. Deal with Mice and other vermin. Climb Trees. My personal cat...Mac came from a shelter. After getting him I soon realized that he had not been taught the above list of cat basics. We pretty well know about the dangers of dogdom and I believe he has the ability to tackle Mickey or Minnie. But this week Mac finally suceeded in climbing a tree. He fell a few

pets: Do Labs Like Water? Duh! - 06/16/08 04:02 PM
Most every evening we like to take our Lab, Honey, for a swim at our little farm pond along with our two Corgi's. Usually after 30 minutes or so of playing heavy duty fetch everybody is worn out and ready to go home. Sometimes if we get home late, and we just don't have time to make the pond, Honey likes to take a dip in her own private dog pool...a converted cattle trough. It doen't matter to her if she gets wet in a pond, a mud hole, or a cattle trough, just as long as it is something wet! Do

pets: Is This Even Possible? That Darn Parrot! - 05/26/08 04:47 PM
It has been a while since I have posted anything about Peepers our African Grey parrot. Anyone who has ever owned an African Grey knows all to well they are real "rascals." Besides having a pretty large vocabulary our Mr. Peepers, is a great musician, and about half prankster too. I know he does a lot of what he does for attention, but what is occurring now has got to take the cake! Now everyone knows parrots mimic. They mimic noise. Peepers mimics everything from our phone conversations to the beep made by the phone when you are dialing a number, to the beeping

pets: The Most Forgiving Mammal Alive. - 04/28/08 10:44 PM
Even though I would never do it, someone once told me that a Labrador Retreiver is so forgiving, that if you popped one in the head with a 2x4, it wouldn't think twice about still loving you to death.. ...Simply put .....Labs could possibly be the most forgiving mammal on the planet. They just love life so much, and usually their owners. I honestly believe that if I streatched my daily routine of throwing 50 or so tennis balls for my lab Honey to retrieive, to say 500 or so tennis balls at a session, well Honey would probably doi it! I think Labs just live for that one

pets: Well We Finnally Found Another Cat - 04/01/08 10:29 PM
Recently an opening came available at the Thurmond household for another cat and when this happens we either go to the local animal shelter or go see the feral cat society. Any way we ended up at the shelter again today for the second time in a week and found a little cat whose breed I have never seen before. He is called a Scottish Fold. They have the funniest little tiny ears and round face...very unusual and a really great temperament. Read about at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scottish_Fold We have never seen one until him.

pets: Remembering the Pound - 03/30/08 11:35 AM
When I was growing up in small town USA we had a Pound, which was short for the Dog Pound. I think the reason they called it the Dog Pound was because the Dog Catcher, (the Animal Control Officer) was really not interested in stray cats or other animals, and exerted most if not all his efforts in rounding up mangy stray dogs. He never responded much to cat calls unless maybe it was a cat that was going in circles and foaming at the mouth. I remember my mother was always afraid of anything "foaming at the mouth" which in those

pets: Our Favorite Kitty is Very Sick - 02/18/08 08:36 PM
Our #1 kitty is real sick. This weekend he became totally lethargic. Out of our 4 cats he is the biggest pig and he refused to eat anything and only sleeps all day. So we took him to the vet today. Bene, is only one year old and the doctor thinks he has some kind of Parvo type illness. His blood count is terrible. Hardly any platelets and no white cells We don't know what is wrong since he has had all his vaccinations! We are really worried about ol Ben. He is one our favorites. Please think of Ben with your prayers.

pets: All our Cats Have A Job. No Slackers Allowed. - 01/30/08 09:00 PM
We live in the country. Therefore our 4 cats (sometimes more) are "Kuntry Kats" and as such, we expect them to earn their keep around our little ranch which is appropriately named KAT Ranch meaning the Khris And Trey Ranch after my wife and yours truly. Now I need to preface by saying we don't raise cats, and our four cats are all "fixed." We have only taken pound kitties or rescue cats and prefer the cross breeds as they seem to be more resilient and better suited to the country life. Simply stated, they survive better, don't expect a lot, even though they are all fat and

pets: Playing Fetch With Labs - 01/13/08 10:36 AM
If you own a Lab, then you already know that playing fetch is just as important to a Lab as eating, sleeping or running. If you don't play fetch.... then your dog most likely is suffering some kind of deprivation syndrome. I have all kinds if things that propel the item we are playing with...my hand , a contraption that propels a dummy using a blank bullet cartridge, and my favorite of all which is called HYPER DOG. It is a giant slingshot that uses tennis balls. You can find it at most major sporting goods stores. Really saves your muscles, and you

pets: Peepers the Parrot thinks it's still Christmas - 01/03/08 10:52 PM
Yep. As I have bloged about before...Mr. Peepers, the African Grey parrot loves the Christmas Season. He has seen and heard a lot this year including listening to Bing Crosby sing Christmas Tunes over and over, two family Christmas events, and this weekend he will experience a third rescheduled late Christmas event at the house. Well Mr. Peepers has shredded his Christmas toys, which is what Parrots do best, and he is still saying "Merry Christmas Ho Ho Ho" daily. But that's ok. We kinda like the Christmas spirit year round! Go Peepers.

pets: A tribute to General Patton - 12/02/07 11:36 PM
General Patton, we called him Pat, passed away this year. Pat was our 14 year old Corgi and the son of a National champion Corgi. He was an only child ...yep from a litter of 1. Corgis are great little dogs that have unbelievable heart and bravery for their size. They resemble a sawed off German Shepard. Pat was a wonderful and faithful dog. When Old Pat left this world, we searched for another dog. By chance I saw a photo and ad for Corgi pups on the counter of a local boot store . We set up a meeting with the owner . Well , we

pets: Parrot Problems - 10/23/07 11:21 PM
We have an African Grey parrot at home that is a joy to have. Every morning he tells me he loves me. When I leave he says goodbye and he seems to know when the seasons are changing. Out of the blue this week he started saying "Merry Christmas ho ho ho" so I guess he knows the holiday is close. When I come home in the evening he says "you want a peanut?" We know he's the one that wants the peanut. He also knows our cats and dogs by name. He's amazing. Any bird lovers out there we need advise. All
