robertson county texas: "Beeing" Busy On A Wordless Wednesday - 09/01/10 12:34 AM
Recently we had bee hives placed on our land. I was really excited to do this because our veggie garden and flower gardens just haven't had the pollination we desired for a few years now.  These bees came from over a hundred miles away via a good beekeeper that we had referred to us. The bees have been gourging on the pollen in our moonflowers that bloom prolifically at night.  Each morning there are so many bees that it sounds like an airport with all the buzzing going on!  Can't wait for the honey!!

robertson county texas: Everything's Peachy In Robertson County Texas! - 07/08/10 12:49 AM

For the last few years our lonely little Peach tree has been bare.  One year our dog , being a Labrador Retriever, thought the peaches were balls for retrieving ...so she picked them all off as high as she could!  Then a drought hit.....then a late freeze.... Then bugs!  But finally this year the rain timed just right and this 6 foot tall peach tree was so loaded down the branches were almost on the ground. This is about 50 lbs and there are still a few to pick. Anyone for peach preserves or how about hot cobbler with a … (21 comments)

robertson county texas: A White Christmas....... For a Few Minutes Anyway In Robertson County - 12/24/09 10:21 PM
Today out of nowhere, and  for  about 10 minutes we found ourselves surrounded by snow flurries.  You would have thought you were somewhere in northern Alaska instead of Robertson County Texas!   It was almost difficult to even see.  And this little storm left as suddenly as it came in.  This event certainly lived up to all the folklore about Texas weather!
In like a lion...out like a lamb.  In just a matter of an hour you would have never known a snow storm had just passed through the area.

robertson county texas: Finally They Have Started Our Well ! - 07/18/09 11:11 PM
We have been waiting almost 6 months to get our water well started. The decision was made to put in a water well even though we have a community water system here where we live. But as my recent water bill indicated it is now too expensive to keep things alive in our yard so we hope this investment will eventually pay for itself. Somehow I have it in my mind that it would be nice to eventually put in a vineyard and that  action will require some substantial water for sure. Nevertheless we are truly excited about this event coming to fruition. … (10 comments)

robertson county texas: The Swallows Are Back - 06/27/09 10:36 PM
Each year now for the last 4 years our home is visited in the summer by swallows. Now the first time they decided to set up home on my front porch I wasn't real happy. Then I found out they are protected and that they are tremendous insect eaters including mosquitoes as part of their diet. Last year we allowed a nest to hatch and I actually watched all 4 young ones launch and take off.  They all survived. This year there was a repeat with 5 babies and now we have 2 more nests ready to launch. It is slightly … (4 comments)

robertson county texas: Old Library In Franklin Texas - 04/29/09 12:10 AM
Located on Hwy 79 in Franklin , Texas .....the old Carnegie Library certainly is reminiscent of days gone by in small towns across the USA.  This library was built in 1913 and is still serving as a library after all those years. Of 31 Carnegie Libraries built in Texas...only 5 still serve as libraries and this is one of them. The basement of the building however has served in the past  as classrooms for elementary students, a dressing room for sports teams from the local high school, and domicile for the superintendent of schools.

robertson county texas: What It Is...A water Tower - 02/25/09 11:49 PM
I didn't realize what was being built near where we live until a few days ago. I thought it was another oil or gas well being drilled and wondered why it was taking so long. Then suddenly this familiar structure started going up and began taking shape.. Apparently someone is putting up a water tower. We live in a rural area on a high hill and our current water pressure is so low we added a water pump to get water upstairs. Since this new water tower appears to be at a much higher elevation than our current supplier's tower we … (3 comments)

robertson county texas: Don't Forget To take Time To Smell The Roses and Plant Some Too! - 01/13/09 10:10 PM
Right now all my roses are dormant. The last ones to bloom stopped about 6 weeks ago.  We love roses and have planted a variety of them on our property.

The soil in this part of Robertson County is very sandy and requires quite a bit of amendments to get roses to grow and bloom.  But once we get that soil to the right level...watch out!  They bloom with gorgeous blooms. Roses are a fantastic addition to the landscaping in a yard and by planting a variety of them you can be sure of lots of flowers from early spring … (5 comments)

robertson county texas: You Would Never Know It Was In Texas! - 01/07/09 10:44 PM
Our area received a little snow in late 08' and also the year before.
area This is certainly not common for the Robertson county area of Texas!  I mentioned to my wife the other day that I thought we were supposed to be in the midst of a global warming trend....but whenever we turn on the news I am confounded at the amount of cold weather our entire nation has received. There certainly has been a lot of snow in the south!
Hope you enjoy the shots!    Certainly doesn't look like Texas does it?

robertson county texas: Birds of A Feather Like our Kitchen Window View - 08/31/08 11:23 PM
In a recent blog about taking care of animals I mentioned we have plenty of water stations on our property for birds and other domestic and wild creatures. One of the hummingbird feeders is right in front our kitchen sink.....so if you are very still,  these little hummers will land and feed just 2 feet from you. It is truly amazing to watch them fly and dive bomb one another squabbling and chattering over the feeder. These two little Ruby Throat females decided to call it a truce,  and take time out for a few sips from the feeder. They really don't like … (14 comments)

robertson county texas: Wheelock Texas Quick View - 08/05/08 02:27 PM

The Wheelock community in Robertson County, Texas is a great place to call home. The local citizenry is active in the community and care a lot..  Recently a new community center was built along with a much needed new volunteer fire station.

Post office is modern and convenient.

The original community center building is so unique and has a lot of character. Supposedly in the early days it served also as a kind of opre house with a stage and all.

The county seat Franklin, Texas is just minutes away and is experiencing a great deal of growth … (5 comments)

robertson county texas: Please Let It Rain! - 08/02/08 11:15 PM

Texas is setting some records right now . It is hot! Real Hot. Some parts of the state have been as high as 104 degrees. And with very little rain. I am noticing trees turning brown and am certain quite a few will die this year from what we are experiencing.

Also I have noticed many folks are cutting back on watering in the Robertson County  area in order to save on water bill costs. Watering early and late are most effective.  But sometimes a little extra may be required to save a tree or shrub. It sometimes … (15 comments)

robertson county texas: While The Country Debates Drilling, Robertson County Texas Drills - 07/17/08 10:14 PM
While the rest of the world debates drilling,  Robertson County  continues to be a hub of activity for this area  of Texas.   Each day in traveling to and from my office I never cease to be amazed at the numbers of tuck loads of oilfield equipment, drill stem and caseing pipe being hauled to their numerous destinations in the field.

There is substantial real estate activity and commercial construction currently taking place to accomodate both the increase in the population of blue and white collar workers and some  of their families in the county. Several new banks have followed the money to … (5 comments)

robertson county texas: Robertson County Texas Tax Appraisals Up - 06/30/08 09:45 AM
Property values for taxation purposes have really risen this year in Robertson County, Texas. The County Judge indicated however, that this does not absolutely mean that property taxes will be raised the same percentage. She did indicated the actual taxation rate will probably be lowered.  This of course would help ease the pain of the higher appraised values. We will just have to wait and see what really happens.
Actually true real estate values have seen an increase in the county, which corresponds with the high increase of oil and gas exploration and production going on in the area. Lots of employment opportunity has created somewhat of … (2 comments)
