"MOVE OVER LAW" Adding Tow Trucks & Other Vehicles January 1, 2012 - 12/31/11 06:43 PM
Effective tonight in New York State the amended "Move Over Law" goes into effect. This same requirement now applies to snowplows, tow trucks, emergency vehicles, highway crews and their vehicles and any vehicles flashing amber lights. If you can't safely move over YOU MUST slow down. This law is a direct move to try and save the lives of emergency personnel while on our highwways. Only time will tell how effective this law will be but it is definitely a step in the right direction to protect these dedicated workers.

NEST - The Learning Thermostat - 12/24/11 11:55 AM
Technology never ceases to amaze me these days. Here is a new thermostat that will learn your daily rhythms and begin adjusting itself. The Nest Learning Thermostat will sense when you leave the house and go into energy conservation mode. The best part? You will be able to control it from your laptop or smart phone. This was created by a team of ex-Apple employees. Packed with technology it has a color LCD display and WI-FI support. This thermostat learns your preferences and habits and adjusts to them. It will also factor in the outside temperature and weather to make your

Hugo The Movie - 12/22/11 03:13 PM
On my birthday this month I went to see the new movie "Hugo." It is in 3D and I always love to see a 3D movie. This is a story set in 1930s Paris about an orphan who lives in the walls of a train station. He takes care of winding all the clocks in this particular train station while he is trying to figure out something his father was working on at the time of his death. The child is played by Asa Butterfield (whom I have never seen before) and I thought he did an amazing job. I

Real or Fake Trees for Christmas? Making Your Holiday EcoFriendly - 12/21/11 06:53 PM
As a kid I always loved having a live Christmas tree - I loved the look and smell of the tree. It was such fun to go out and pick out a tree each year, whether we went to a place and cut it down or even just to buy one off the Christmas tree lots. As I got older and had to take care of it myself it was kind of messy after Christmas to try and remove the tree and and the needles as they fell off etc... so I became less opposed to the fake trees. Friday Foto's - I Saw My First Eagle This Week! - 12/16/11 04:49 PM
I was coming from an appointment this week when way off in the distance I saw a huge bird in the top of a tree. It was bigger than any other bird I have ever seen in my area; even the Turkey Buzzards. Anyone who has seen a Turkey Buzzard knows how big they are and this was no comparison. As I made my turn onto the next road I stopped my car so I was parallel to it but I was still extremely far away. Thank goodness for zoom lenses! The pictures are not very clear but clear

Middle Class Tax Cuts for New York State! - 12/13/11 12:00 PM
Last week in Albany, Governor Andrew Cuomo called the Legislature back into “Extraordinary Session” to deal with the impact on New York of the slow national economy and the political gridlock in Washington. Working with the legislative leaders he put forth a comprehensive economic plan that includes tax cuts for middle class New Yorkers who earn up to $300,000 a year. The changes will reduce middle class tax rates to the lowest level since 1953.The plan brings fairness to our tax code and will provide an economic stimulus to New York State. The plan also eliminated the MTA payroll tax for

In New Construction, This Is Not A Good Sign - 12/08/11 02:34 PM
This is a post from home inspector Jay Markanich about the problem of seeing water in the basement of a new construction home and the future problems this will bring about if not corrected immediately. Via Jay Markanich - Northern VA Home Inspector (Jay Markanich Real Estate Inspections, LLC): When you see water in the basement in new construction, this is not a good sign. It is very, very important that on new construction water is not encouraged into the house. Proper placement and grading of soil should encourage water AWAY from the house. Obviously this water is not coming in

Urgent Help Needed for December Holidays - Washingtonville District - 12/01/11 01:38 PM
The "Seniors for Holiday Wishes" program is in desperate need of assistance and is in danger of not being able to provide help to needy local families this holiday season. The Seniors program has been providing gifts to needy children in the Washingtonville School District for many years. Under the leadership of Stella Bianco, this program grew through the years to providing gifts to over 100 local families and over 200 children. Generous donations by local residents and businesses over the years have made this a very successful program affording needy children an opportunity to enjoy Christmas that they may otherwise have not
