guthrie theater: Pawlenty Budget Proposal Threatens to Decimate the Arts in Minnesota - 02/07/09 03:32 PM
Govenor Tim Pawlenty's latest budget-balancing idea is sure to appeal to folks who are bad at math.
The Governor has proposed phasing out funding of the Minnesota State Arts Board by 2011 to zero.  The ten million reduction under his proposal won't do a thing to balance Minnesota's five billion dollar deficit, but the Governor wants to dismantle the State Arts Board anyway, turning it into a "privatized" nonprofit organization.
Not only artists suffer from the plan (yes, artists pay income taxes too).  Here's a partial list of who gets hurt by Governor Pawlenty's not-too-bright idea:
The State and Orpheum theaters, the Guthrie … (7 comments)

guthrie theater: Super MeMe barrage - Enough already, here's my reply! - 05/29/08 12:41 PM
First I got tagged by Rebecca Levinson.  Then Stewart Penn tagged me.  And Anthony Clark tagged me on my Wisconsin blog.
Okay, I give up.  It's MeMe time.
1. Who is your favorite musical artist?
I don't listen to music for relaxation.  I worked in symphony orchestras for twenty-five years before getting into real estate.
Ever meet a blacksmith who loved his anvil?
My favorite opera singer is Kiri Te Kanawa.
I listen to Garth Brooks, Kenny G and Prince now & then. My favorite Prince tune is the first song on his "Gold Album"

guthrie theater: Idle Chatter About "American Idol" - 04/24/08 06:44 AM
I watched "American Idol" on the evening when Brooke White decided to start over on her song.  Some viewers may have been shocked by what she did.  A few even referred to her performance as a "train wreck".
I've been in the music business for over thirty years.  At the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, I remember being part of a panel of three (alongside Artistic Director Garland Wright and Music Director David Bishop) who auditioned singers for the musical "Candide".  And I've performed in numerous back-up orchestras behind pop music vocalists.
On a couple of rare occasions over the years, I've seen professionals start a song … (12 comments)

guthrie theater: Minnesota Monthly Releases its 2008 Salary Survey - Who Earns What? - 01/05/08 12:55 PM
There's some great information among the pages of the January, 2008 issue of Minnesota Monthly.  The magazine has just released its annual "Who Makes What" survey of Minnesota income information.
The juicy salary information includes some very important statistics about the Minneapolis and Saint Paul economy.  For example, the article reveals that a dollar goes a lot farther in the Twin Cities than it does elsewhere, comparing prices for various commodities compare with cities such as New York, Seattle and Omaha, Nebraska.
The Minnesota economy is apparently alive and well, despite the ups and downs of the national economic scene.  Healthy … (2 comments)

guthrie theater: Minneapolis Guthrie Theater Alumni Can be Seen All Over Television & Movies - 12/11/07 05:05 AM
I tuned into FOX TV's new cop thriller, "K-ville" yesterday evening, and I was delighted to see an old friend, John Carroll Lynch, starring in a lead role (Captain James Embry).  John is a Guthrie Theater alumnus and colleague of mine from the 1990s and we worked together at the old Guthrie when the late Garland Wright was Artistic Director.  I was Music Director at the time I worked with John on Peter Weiss' Marat/Sade at the Guthrie in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

You'll see a great many Guthrie alumni on television and in movies.  John appeared in the movie "Fargo", along with former … (10 comments)
