nar: Diversity and multi-culturalism foster sensitivity and good business practices - 01/14/12 04:09 PM
Pacita Dimacali has contributed an excellent post on the topic of diversity and multiculturalism in the practice of real estate. This is a subject which is too often shrugged off as "politically correct" or "just another fair housing pitch". Pacita does a commendable job of explaining the value of diversity and the fact that attention to diversity issues is good business practice. I teach the NAR "At Home With Diversity" course and I'll add that AHWD is a top-notch way to learn more about diversity issues and how to incorporate them into your business. Statistics from RealTrends (compiled mostly from NAR data) show that twenty-six per cent of real estate agents closed zero sales in 2010. And if you look at agents closing five or fewer transactions in 2010, the number jumps to 62%. The RealTrends study draws the conclusion that the top forty per cent of agents were responsible for eighty per cent of sales in 2010. In other words, 60% of real estate agents in the U.S. were responsible for only one-fifth of closed sales last year. Ignoring for a moment the fact that this (13 comments)
Today's meeting of the National Association of Realtors Equal Opportunity - Cultural Diversity Committee took place at the Convention Center Mariott Hotel in Anaheim, California. The meeting was chaired by Danette O'Neal and NAR Executive Fred Underwood. Among the highlights of this meeting was an address to the committee by member Eric Kodner, representing the National Association of Gay & Lesbian Real Estate Professionals (NAGLREP). Kodner is also Chair of the Wisconsin Realtors Association (WRA) Diversity in Housing Committee.
Today (my first full day in Anaheim for NAR Convention), we had our Instructor Re-certification sessions for both the "At Home With Diversity" course and for other REBAC courses. The workshops took place at the Grand Californian Hotel in Anaheim. Coordinators Lindsay Green and Carol Kairis (with REBAC) were in charge of registration for the event. Dwayne Carte was our instructor for the At Home With Diversity "Train the Trainer" session. We had a small group of fifteen instructors (from all over the (0 comments)
I noticed this announcement in my email this morning. Apparently, the National Association of Realtors and Chrysler have decided to team up and offer Realtor members a special deal. Buy or lease one of a number of "select new Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram model vehicles" and you'll receive a $500 cash allowance. They'll also throw in a two-year "service agreement" under which you receive eight free oil changes. What if I want to buy something other than (2 comments)
The upcoming National Association of Realtors Annual Convention in Anaheim, California begins on November 11. But NAR Conference Meetings begin on the 9th of November, including lots of CRS meetings. You'll find the event schedule at the NAR Conference Live website. There's also a NAR Conference Facebook page. I know there will be at least a few fellow ActiveRain members there, like friend and CRS colleague Jeff Dowler. I'll be staying at the CRS official hotel (the Hyatt Regency Orange County) and I hope to run into as many fellow Rainers (2 comments)
On Thursday, October 13, we had eighteen forward-thinking Realtors in attendance at the Minnesota Association of Realtors building in Edina, for the NAR "At Home With Diversity" class. Not only was the course well-attended, but class participation was among the best I've ever encountered for this course. We were delighted to see attendees from as far away as Hutchinson, Minnesota in class last Thursday. And it was an honor to see my friend Nobu Hata in attendance as well. (2 comments)
I was excited to learn today that the Minnesota Department of Commerce has approved the National Association of Realtors "At Home With Diversity" course for 7.5 CE credits in Minnesota. I was also proud to be part of the team which undertook the effort to secure continuing education credit, along with Minnesota Association of Realtors Senior Vice President Linda Modlinski, Val Brones and Peg Anderson of MNAR, and Minnesota CRS Chapter President Linda Johnson. The "At Home With Diversity" course is a great one-day blueprint for incorporating diversity into your real estate (3 comments)

nar: TAKE THIS OPINION POLL - NAR is contemplating a $40 Dues Increase to fund Political Campaigns - What's Your Opinion? - 03/23/11 12:58 AM
NEWS FLASH - NAR IS CONTEMPLATING $40 DUES INCREASE TO HELP FUND POLITICAL CAMPAIGNS- WHAT'S YOUR OPINION? Your NAR dues may be going up. An increase in dues of forty bucks a year may be on the horizon. Inman News reported today that NAR is considering the idea of a Realtor member dues hike of $40 per year during 2012-2013. NAR hopes to raise as much as eighty million dollars in so-called "soft money" for influencing election outcomes in state and national campaign races. Some are concerned that the proposed dues increase could cost NAR the loss of a significant number of members. Others feel that NAR must do this in (6 comments)
nar: NAR Convention in November is Over, and It's Already Time to Start Planning for NAR Midyear Meetings - 11/19/10 01:09 PM
The NAR Convention in New Orleans just ended on November 8th and now it's time to start planning for the NAR Legislative Meetings in the spring of 2011. Committee schedules are already out and CRS events are scheduled. Looks like the Midyear Meetings in Washington, D.C. are going to be every bit as hectic as they were last spring. NAR has come up with a preliminary schedule for Midyear which you'll find online here: http://www.realtor.org/convhome.nsf/pages/midyearsms Owing to the usual difficulties of finding hotel rooms (especially at good rates) in Washington, DC, it isn't too early to begin planning for Midyear. Today, the National Association of Realtors made history. At a meeting of the NAR Delegate Body, composed of members and executives of local and state Boards of Realtors and Realtor Associations, the voting delegates approved an Amendment to Article 10 of the Realtor Code of Ethics. Effective January 1, 2011, Article 10 of the Realtor Code of Ethics will read, "REALTORS® shall not deny equal professional services to any person for reasons of race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, national origin or sexual (42 comments)
nar: "Heroes Welcome Home" Program Makes Accessible Housing a Reality for Returning War Veterans - 11/08/10 12:00 AM
At Friday's NAR Equal Opportunity - Cultural Diversity Forum, attendees learned about the Heroes Welcome Home program and its mission of helping tens of thousands of wounded war veterans to achieve the dream of owning a home which accomodates their needs. The two-hour presentation was hosted by our National Association of Realtors Equal Opportunity - Cultural Diversity Forum and was ably-moderated by Chair Sandra Butler. Unfortunately there were only about forty in attendance at this meeting. The numbers should have been ten times that. Heroes Welcome Home was first created as a project by the Chicago Association of Realtors® in 2009. The program won (2 comments)
On Saturday, I opened the mail at my Madeline Island real estate office, as I would any other day. To my surprise, I had received an anonymous, one-page typewritten letter from California. The sender had printed "Winchester, CA" in the upper-left corner of the envelope, but the postmark was from San Bernardino. My address was printed exactly as it appears on my ActiveRain profile. This was no ordinary letter. It was hate mail.

nar: Real Estate Webinars - Which Do You Like? Have You Found any Particularly Helpful? - 09/21/10 08:01 PM
It seems like the real estate industry is flooded with Webinars lately. NAR has gotten in on the act. So is the Council of Residential Specialists. RealBird and TourFactory offer their own product webinars. There are webinars on social networking and searh engine optimization and real estate photography. There are others that are product-specific, like the TourFactory webinars. And still others that are about growing your business or staying positive in a negative economy. I receive solicitations to attend real estate webinars every day in my inbox. Some of these webinars are free. Others charge for the privilege. My experience has been that some of the best webinars (6 comments)
nar: How Do You Refer to Your Fellow Real Estate Professionals? What Steps Do You Take to Help Protect the REALTOR® Trademark? - 09/27/07 03:52 PM
We have all read posts from time to time which appear to refer to all real estate license holders as "Realtors". Without naming names or singling out any particular post, I wanted to address the issue of how we refer to our colleagues in a manner that does not jeaopardize the REALTOR® trademark. In a search of related posts about this topic, I have noticed that many reasons were stated for the need to "promote" or "protect" the REALTOR® registered mark. But there is an issue behind the need that goes beyond differentiating ourselves from those who do not belong to the National (21 comments)
