AZ Account Executive Has a Secret Legacy - 07/31/07 10:36 PM
Rick has a secret life.  (If you're just browsing, or if you can't stand the suspense, scroll to the end of the post and leave a comment.)
In real life, Rick is my AE for ComUnity Bank.  Rick's been in the business for a long time, and he knows just about everyone from Tucson to Phoenix.  I'm a one-man shop, so I know my volume isn't paying his mortgage, but Rick stops by just about every week to sit and visit for awhile.  He's become one of my favorite people.
During one of those visits, Rick let it slip that he's a … (7 comments)

CAEDES.net is FREE - 07/30/07 11:18 PM

CNN doesn't do us justice.
Southern Arizona is home to the world's greenest desert.  This time of year the Monsoons paint the mountains and lowlands in a hundred different shades of green.
We have more than 300 days of sunshine here in Tucson, but boy, do we appreciate the seasonal Monsoon rains.  They come like clockwork every summer, and if you have never experienced this natural light-show, you're in for a treat.
I encourage you to search the photo library of Caedes to catch some of the fantastic weather Arizona has to offer at this time of year.
Enjoy!  It's … (4 comments)

BRAND Yourself! - 07/29/07 10:13 PM
My friend Dick Carson and I have been working his cattle each April for more than a decade.  He's the photographer.  That's me with the branding iron.
This post is about YOU, so stick with me.
The brand, GM, represents a whole lot more than the name of the operation, GlenMar Ranch.  It represents the work and accomplishments of three generations of the Powell family on what is today GlenMar Ranch in Southeastern Oklahoma.
Back to the topic of Branding, though.  Cattle rustling isn't something that went away when barbed wire fences closed off the open range and the western cowboy's way … (49 comments)

Wildlife Sells! Coyotes at Old Tucson Studios - 07/29/07 02:39 AM
I grew up in the jungles of Suriname, South America--all the way down to the Brazilian border.  We lived on the Palomeu River with a tribe of Indians who call themselves Tirio.  Once a month a small Cessna flew into our little village with mail, rice, flour, canned goods and other staples.
My brothers and I hunted and fished in the rainforest, and if we weren't successful, there wasn't meat on the table.  We grew up appreciating the natural world and the many species other than our own who make it so interesting.
Fast forward to Tucson, AZ.  I took this … (4 comments)

Be Your Town's Biggest Fan! - 07/28/07 12:06 AM

Don't take this as a commercial.  It's not.  But nearly ten years ago, my company in NJ offered me a position as National Sales Manager.  They said if I accepted, I had to move out West--somewhere near a major airport, west of the Mississippi.  "You choose," the boss said, "and we'll move you there."  My Darlin' chose Arizona.  Together, we chose Tucson, and we've never looked back.  When I told my boss I was separating from the company in 2003 because we didn't want to move back to NJ, he didn't believe me.  He knew we had kids and grandkids in NJ, and … (5 comments)

Make Action Your Legacy - 07/26/07 08:13 AM

"A ship in the harbor is safe, but that's not what ships are made for."
Think of your mind as a boatyard, and yourself as a boat builder.  Think of your business as the vessel you're creating.  Once it's seaworthy, it's going to take you to the places you've dreamed of, perhaps to places you never imagined possible.
I struggle with the pursuit of perfection.  It's a flaw.  Before my boat was launched, I wasted more years than I care to admit making sure it would be sleek and beautiful.  I didn't want it in the water until the paint … (22 comments)

COUNTRYWIDE: SCARE 'EM TO THE TABLE! - 07/25/07 09:07 PM
A survey out this morning says that Mortgage Brokers (and loan officers) are avoiding subprime loan originations.  That's too bad, because the need will not dry up and blow away, even if the product is in short supply.
What the subprime mess needs is Originators who look out more for the interest of the Client than for their own back pocket.
It's called ethics.  If your parents taught it to you, you don't have to ask yourself the question "Gee, is this ethical?"
Countrywide's stock fell to a 52 week low this past week.  A client this morning came in holding a … (0 comments)

John Wayne and Golden Gate - 07/25/07 07:42 AM
I love John Wayne westerns!  If the movie has a saguaro cactus in it, you can bet the movie was shot at Old Tucson Studios.
Now here's the thing to look for--somewhere in the movie, the camera will pan from the action to the background, and there it is!  Golden Gate Mountain.
Even long time Tucsonans have no idea that the movie studio, which is still active, sits at the foot of a mountain named Golden Gate.
Take a ride on Speedway west toward the Tucson Mountains.  It will be good for your soul.  As you leave the city, the … (16 comments)
