That doesn't look like a desert creature to me! Since ancient times, a natural hotwater spring has existed in the foothills of the Santa Catalina Mountains. (If you're visiting Tucson, you can see how to get there on the map.)
The property today is a gem ~ an unusual find in the desert southwest, with it's ponds, palms and very old Mesquite trees. I need to do some more research, but I believe the ranch house was built in 1900 or thereabouts. Today, it houses a Tucson Audubon Society gift shop and a gallery. I'm always looking for ways to illustrate my topic with visual images. The reason? We think visually ~ in images, and an image conveys immediate understanding in a way that words alone cannot.
This morning, I'm hiking in Agua Caliente Park. It's an hours' drive across Tucson from my home in the Tucson Mountains. I'll be photoblogging about it later, and I'll want my readers to have a sense of the physical and ecological context of the photos.
