az: Arizona Real Estate Roots: Roadside Geology Class - 11/08/09 09:09 AM

They're not making any more real estate.  How many times have you heard that from an agent who's trying to sell you some?
Actually, it's not true.
Planet earth is living, moving, folding in on itself, and constantly re-creating the stuff we call real estate.  (Then again, our lifetime is less than the blink of an eye on that geologic time scale, so you might want to act on that purchase you've been contemplating before someone else snaps it up.)
A dozen of us got together on Saturday morning to take a "roadside geology" trip to Winkleman, Arizona.  Two … (18 comments)

az: Friday's Photo: A Living Statue In My Backyard! - 10/09/09 10:32 PM

My folks lived in Clavarack, New York for three decades.  When I'd go visit them, I got used to seeing concrete statues of deer people had placed in their front yards.
I never understood the desire to do that.  I'd much rather have my back yard graced by the presence of living, breathing statues from time to time.
This lady of the desert graced us with her presence this morning at 6:45 a.m.

az: Value Added For Your Home: Don Ross of Tucson, Arizona is an Artist In Steel - 10/08/09 10:28 PM

Don Ross is the owner of Designs In Steel, a Tucson company that designs, fabricates, and installs some of the coolest functional art you've ever seen.
Quiet, unassuming, and tremendously competent, he's just the kind of person you want to hire to create a blend of beauty and functionality for your home.
REALTORS are often asked what improvements add value to a home, and then the followup question:  "What improvements will bring a return on my investment?"  Don's creations are the answer to that second question.
Look at the double arched doors to the right.  Created from native mesquite, Saguaro … (14 comments)

az: Unusual Wildlife In Tucson, AZ: "A Wonderful Bird Is the Pelican" - 09/20/09 01:31 AM

A pelican in Tucson, Arizona?
I was shooting a video with REALTOR Kevin Wood, Realty Execs just down the street.  Sitting at the kitchen table with the Flip Video camera, I was asking Kevin about the home he had just listed.
"Just down the street, there's a lake" he said.  I had to see for myself.  What I saw took my mind back to my high school english days, with the poet Ogden Nash.
A wonderful bird is the Pelican.
His beak can hold more than his belican.
He can hold in his beak
Enough food for a week,

az: Photo of the Week: Desert Storm Over Tucson's Avra Valley - 09/08/09 06:01 AM

Desert Storm on Labor Day, 2009:  Hiking in the Tucson Mountains, I followed the progression of a desert thunderstorm from its early stage (right) to its maturity (above.)
The remains of Hurricane Jimena have left significant moisture in the air here in Tucson over the past four days.
Combine that moisture with our summer heat in the desert, and we have the makings of some of the world's most spectacular thunderstorms.
Wide open spaces allow us a front-seat view.
The first photo on the right was taken approximately one hour before sunset, and the one above was set afire by … (44 comments)

az: Rainers - I Need Your Help - 3 Office Suite In Central Tucson, AZ Needs A Tenant - 08/24/09 10:27 AM

For two years now, I've turned to my friends on The Active Rain Real Estate Network for help, and I've never been disappointed.
You read my post on 7/11, Unemployed At 60 (But Not In The Least Discouraged).  You rallied around me with the most encouraging comments, phone calls and emails, and I'm so very grateful for all of you.
If that had to happen, the timing couldn't have been better.  I had just renegotiated my lease (on this beautiful office suite to your right) downward by 23%, and the landlord and leasing company couldn't have been more helpful.
Now … (15 comments)

az: What Does It Mean When A Dozen Vultures Show Up to Watch You Tee Off? - 07/01/09 12:16 AM

5:45 a.m. and three of us had a tee time at the Santa Rita Golf Course in Vail, AZ.  We played nine before starting the workday.  I thought I was doing pretty well until we reached the fifth tee.
We were greeted by a sight I'd never seen.  Donte' Ormsby (who lives on the course) told us that these vultures roost in this huge tree every night.  That's Donte' on the right.  (He's the man who created my website mikeintucson.com)
The vultures were catching the day's first rays, stretching and talking amongst themselves, when Kevin Wood (left) stepped up to … (24 comments)

az: Silly Saturday Night Post: Cool! You've Got A Web Browser! - 06/20/09 11:37 PM

She turned 10 three days ago.  This morning my grand daughter and I drove to the Pusch Ridge Stables in Catalina State Park for her first ride.
The drive took 45 minutes, and on the way, she asked to see my Blackberry.  The next ten minutes were a monologue to no one in particular, emanating from the little one in the back seat.
"Cool!  You have a web browser!"  "I wonder if I can get to my email on Verizon.net?"  "Whoa!  That's fast."  "Let's see what other applications you have on this thing..."  "A bunch."  "Grandpa, did you know you … (28 comments)

az: Collecting Moonbeams in the Tucson Mountains - 03/10/09 11:59 PM

I was walking late this evening as the moon rose over Cat Mountain.  At first, it's bright white orb was all I could see.  Then, as the moon climbed higher in the sky, inky black cloud edges caught the silver moonbeams, making the invisible visible.  The beauty of the cloud structure was there all the time; I just couldn't see it.
There are lessons to be learned when we least expect to find them, if only we will stop quietly once in awhile to look up.  (Tuition is free.)

az: Arizona Holds The World Record for Diamondbacks, and It's Not Baseball! - 01/20/09 10:10 AM
I've posted about the Western Diamondback Rattlesnake previously.  The Arizona Sonoran Desert Museum has a program to introduce people to these reptiles, native to Arizona.  We've even had what I thought was a large specimen (between four and five feet long) in our back yard for a summer.  (We knew where he was, and he wasn't a bother.)
Our son in law Fred is an avid outdoorsman and hunter, and he hunts regularly in the west.  Fred keeps an eye out for interesting articles, and sends them our way when he finds them.
Here's his most recent find!

az: Painterly Photos For Localism? A Western Landscape or Two - 01/18/09 11:19 PM
Doreen McPherson commented on one of my posts, saying that the twilight photo looked "painterly."  That's the photo above.  I call it "Nightfall in Tucson Estates II."
I'm not an artist, but my family has a few who are.  My dad, my sister, my cousin, two neices and my late grandfather all are (were) artists, and Doreen's comment struck a chord.
Yesterday I drove down to Sierra Vista with a client from Minnesota to look at some manufactured homes I have on a liquidation list.  On the way back to Tucson, I took a photo of this granite escarpment on the … (17 comments)

az: Accenture Match Play 2009 at the New Ritz-Carlton Golf Club at Dove Mountain in Marana, AZ - 12/11/08 05:15 AM
It's going to sneak up on you if you're not careful.  The dates are February 23 to March 1st.
2009's Accenture World Match Play will be held at the brand new Ritz-Carlton Golf Club at Dove Mountain in Marana, Arizona.  Tickets are already on sale.  Here's a link to get yours.
Tiger Woods won last year's match on a bum knee.  He had surgery in June following his win of the US Open at Torrey Pines, and has been in rehab since then.
As the defending champion, will Woods make his return to competition here at Dove Mountain?
I'm betting he will.

az: Baxter Black Country: Red Tail Hawks Nesting in Benson, AZ - 05/14/08 10:31 PM
The speedometer was pegged at 50 mph, and I was heading down SR 90 towards Karchner Caverns in Benson, AZ.  Talk radio was blaring.  Hannity, I think.  (I'm a right wing nut case, raised in a Latin American country where the Minister of Finance was castrated in public during the 60's.  Wouldn't that change the political mood?!  But I digress.)
Having been a hunter (first with the gun, and now with the camera) since my childhood in the Amazon, I've developed good peripheral vision.  Do you see it in the photo to the right?
Out of the corner of my right eye I saw a … (20 comments)

az: Shotgun Wedding? Bank of America Values Countrywide Between Zero and $2.00 - 05/05/08 12:49 PM
BofA is not my favorite lending institution at the moment.  Not ever, actually.
They inked a deal last year to buy Countrywide.  Today comes news on Bloomberg that the $7 per share that was to have been paid has been reduced to somewhere between Zero and $2.00 a share.  The deal may not go through at all.
It'll be interesting to see how this plays out.  Without Countrywide, BofA has no wholesale lending arm.  Perhaps they've decided that wholesale lending isn't a necessary component for loan origination any more.
If you're a broker, you're aware of Bank of America's stance on your … (21 comments)

az: Be Your Town's Biggest Fan! - 07/28/07 12:06 AM

Don't take this as a commercial.  It's not.  But nearly ten years ago, my company in NJ offered me a position as National Sales Manager.  They said if I accepted, I had to move out West--somewhere near a major airport, west of the Mississippi.  "You choose," the boss said, "and we'll move you there."  My Darlin' chose Arizona.  Together, we chose Tucson, and we've never looked back.  When I told my boss I was separating from the company in 2003 because we didn't want to move back to NJ, he didn't believe me.  He knew we had kids and grandkids in NJ, and … (5 comments)
