hummingbird: Identify This Red Billed Hummingbird - 04/25/10 12:04 AM

After the rain yesterday, today was just perfect for a picnic.  My Darlin' and I headed south to Madera Canyon.  Just east of the town of Green Valley, AZ, it's part of the Coronado National Forest, and a haven for all sorts of birds, and especially hummingbirds.  Right now the red flames (right) on the end of our desert ocotillos provide food for hummers migrating north.
There is a beautiful little gift shop halfway up the canyon, and that's where I captured a photo of this little hummingbird.
Will someone please identify him?

hummingbird: Silly Saturday Night Post: Painting The Desert Red With Flowers - 04/11/09 09:53 PM

Red is the color of spring across the desert southwest.  Hummingbirds migrating north find nourishment in the nectar of desert flowers like the Ocotillo flame there on the left, and the poppy on the right.
I remember hiking in the desert some ten years ago, wearing a red baseball cap.  An Anna's Hummingbird appeared out of nowhere and hovered directly in front of my face, perhaps 12 inches from the brim of the cap.  She darted left and stopped the same distance from me, getting a different perspective.  Then she darted right.  It was as if she was trying to … (27 comments)

This Western Screech Owl has taken up residence on my back ramada (porch to the snowbirds) much to the consternation of a female Mourning Dove, which had built its nest of sticks on top of the Saguaro "boot."
The boot (usually found inside a Saguaro Cactus) is the owl's preferred nesting site, and she had no trouble driving off the Mourning Dove.
The owl was minding her own business, napping in the opening of the boot, when the hummingbird found her and began to complain.
Mama hummingbird must have a nest somewhere close by, and recognized the owl as a predator.
She's a … (39 comments)

hummingbird: Homebuilding On A Miniature Scale: A Sure Sign of Spring in Tucson, AZ - 04/23/08 12:29 AM
While we Lenders, Real Estate Agents, Appraisers and Title folk are worrying about the housing market and its effects on our individual economies, there's hope on the horizon.
Hummingbirds have returned to Tucson, Arizona.
Oblivious to the humans around them, they court the opposite sex, settle on a mate, and get down to the business of building a home.
The gossamer nest protects the tiny eggs from wind and weather.  Chittering defiantly at my camera, the mother refuses to budge, and after two or three photos, I retreat.
