saguaro national park: The Desert's Version of Severe Weather Warning: The Haboob - 11/06/11 10:14 PM

~ Dust Storm Sunset at Saguaro National Park TMD~
They're called Haboobs ~ rolling dust storms that suck the dirt from the face of the earth, throw it high into the atmosphere, and move it miles away before dropping it back down again.
We're not talking a dust devil or two.  A haboob can move hundreds of tons of earth, and when it rolls over you, the sky becomes black as night.
I took the photo on the right last Friday afternoon at 5:00 pm, the end of the day for Saguaro National Park's Red Hills Visitor Center.  You can … (8 comments)

saguaro national park: Sunset Hike on the Hugh Norris Trail, Saguaro National Park West - 10/03/11 02:02 PM

~ Self Portrait of a Hiker ~
The Hugh Norris Trail is one of the premier attractions of Saguaro National Park's Tucson Mountain District.  I didn't hike the entire trail last night; I started at 5:30 and hiked to an elevation where I could capture some of the last rays of sunlight.
The granite steps you see in the photo above were cut and places by men working for the CCC in the 1930s.
One generation's work is a blessing to the next, and I like to think of those men who worked to cut and shape the rock beneath … (13 comments)

saguaro national park: Desert Entrance: Crickethead Inn On Saguaro National Park - 06/16/11 09:53 AM

~ Entrance: Recycled Windmill with Bottles ~
On the edge of Saguaro National Park's Tucson Mountain District is a Bed & Breakfast called Crickethead Inn.
I visited the Inn while hiking one of the trails in the Picture Rocks area recently, and the entrance gate captured my imagination.  Look what can be done with imagination, old bottles and an old windmill!
Guests at the Crickethead Inn enjoy what I'm blessed to experience every day: waking to the sounds of the Sonoran Desert, and watching the sun rise in solitude.
Crickethead Inn abuts Saguaro National Park, one of our country's most … (6 comments)

saguaro national park: Monsoon Flash Floods: Arizona Before The Stupid Motorist Law - 06/14/11 11:31 PM

"Don't worry, Ma.  I think we can make it with this newfangled automobile."

I was hiking in a "wash" near Saguaro National Park.  About a quarter mile down the wash from the paved road, I came upon this old car, half buried in the sand.
Someone thought that the summer monsoon flood running across the road wasn't all that dangerous, and he (don't you think it had to be a man?) gunned the accelerator and made for the other side.  Oops!
Flash flood dangerToday, Arizona has approximately 100 drownings per year, and more than half involve automobiles.  People … (32 comments)

saguaro national park: Counting Cacti In Saguaro National Park: The Saguaro Census - 03/09/10 07:24 AM

Just like people, Saguaros within the National Park boundaries are subject to a census every 10 years.
Kurt Repanshek, a modern day John Muir, is a freelance journalist who writes about land use issues, especially in the Rocky Mountain West.  His January 7th post for the National Parks Traveler begins like this:
Much as the bison is to Yellowstone National Park, the saguaro cactus is to Saguaro National Park. Tall, spiny, and handsome, the noble saguaro was the impetus behind the creation of Saguaro National Park, and reigns today as that park's icon. With hopes of ensuring it stays that … (16 comments)

saguaro national park: Growth In The Rain: Active Rain Is Adding Tortoises! - 12/31/08 05:52 AM

One of Aesop's fables is the story of the Tortoise & the Hare.  (Not familiar? Click the link!  This is a perfect read out loud bedtime story for little ones.)  It's the story of a race between these two.  The tortoise is slow and steady, and wins the race.
Have you noticed that even as the numbers of agents, lenders, and others whose living is tied to real estate have dwindled this year, Active Rain continues to grow in membership?  We're adding tortoises!
We Tortoises are picking up side jobs, … (23 comments)
