Just opposite the Arizona Sonoran Desert Museum is the trailhead for the King Canyon Trail. It's one of Tucson's easiest hikes, as the first mile of the upper trail follows an old mining road. The desert wildflowers can be seen in abundance right now.
Who can identify this one? I don't know what it is.

I've been keeping an eye on this number as it moved up, and was guessing that we wouldn't hit this number until Valentine's day.

Spectacular scenery draws visitors from around the globe to the old mining towns of Clarkdale, Jerome and Cottonwood. Look on the map, and you'll find this area is southwest of one Arizona's better known destinations, Sedona.

It's a 2 1/2 hour drive from Tucson to Mesa, and my first REALTOR appointment was at 8:00 a.m. I was up at 4:30 and on the road by 5:30. It was dark when I stopped at Starbucks on Cortaro Road, and dawn was beginning to brighten the edges of the sky when I passed Picacho Peak.
Sunrise in December can be especially beautiful in Arizona when the rains come, as they have this month. It's raining tonight as I write this, and the clouds were already in evidence at dawn.

Mortgages repriced for the worse this morning, and that's not a surprise in light of tomorrow's midterm elections. What you may not know is that this week has more than a little in the way of news that will affect interest rates. Here's what's happening this week in addition to the Midterm Elections:
1. The Federal Open Market Committee meets on Wednesday, the day after the midterm elections. The Committee is expected to announce a second round of Quantitative Easing.

I'll bet you didn't know (until you stumbled across this little blog) that Tucson in 1862 was the western capital of the Confederate Arizona Territory. It was. Google it.
This peak, about 40 minutes northwest of Tucson (along Interstate 10) marks the site of the westerlymost battle of the Civil War. It's called Picacho Peak, and I've stood on the very top of that granite outcropping you see there, snapping photos for you, and just enjoying the view.

What you're looking at is part of the Riparian Corridor at Tucson's Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. I was here to learn about bats~the world's only flying mammals. (Flying squirrels can't really fly; they're just real good at gliding.)
Think of it [the water] as a runway for for airplanes to do "touch-and-go" landings, only in this case, the airplanes are bats skimming the surface of the water to take a drink.
I didn't photograph a bat tonight, but that turtle was very obliging as he made his way across the pond.

Early esterday morning, I was sitting on the ramada drinking coffee, eating breakfast and being quiet so I wouldn't wake my Darlin'. (Our bedroom opens on to the ramada.)
Birds where singing, the day was ahead of me, and all was right with my world.
Backyard concertA male Cardinal was providing a concert, just singing his heart out. I couldn't see a female Cardinal anywhere. Then I zoomed in and found the object of his affection.

After the rain yesterday, today was just perfect for a picnic. My Darlin' and I headed south to Madera Canyon. Just east of the town of Green Valley, AZ, it's part of the Coronado National Forest, and a haven for all sorts of birds, and especially hummingbirds. Right now the red flames (right) on the end of our desert ocotillos provide food for hummers migrating north.
There is a beautiful little gift shop halfway up the canyon, and that's where I captured a photo of this little hummingbird.
Will someone please identify him?

I bought a new camera on Saturday. Sunday evening, west of Three Points, Arizona, and halfway to Ajo, I found some beautiful flowers by the roadside. We've had a lot of rain since the first of the year (over five inches, and we only get 12" for an entire year on average.)
