tucson mountain park: There's No Shortage Of Beauty With Arizona Real Estate - 03/03/11 09:06 AM

~ Hiking Treasure ~
In Arizona, if you see clouds in the western sky half an hour before sunset, you know you're in for a beautiful evening.  Last night's sunset in the Tucson Mountains looked just like this.
If you're a facebooker, check out the photos on my Tucson Mountain Park non-profit page.

tucson mountain park: 'Twas The Day After Christmas... - 12/26/10 09:02 PM

~ The Day After Christmas, 2010 ~
Looking west from Tucson Mountain Park
Looking west at the glow of the setting sun, I couldn't help but admire the yellows and oranges painting our Tucson skies.  This is a magical time of day in Tucson.  While the east coast is hunkering down under blizzard conditions, with more than 1,500 flights cancelled today, it was 60 degrees as the sun faded into the west.
Then I turned toward the south, and instead of orange and yellow, the southern sky was painted deep rose.  I knew you'd need a break from the snow.  … (12 comments)

tucson mountain park: Christmas Eve in Tucson Mountain Park, Tucson, AZ - 12/24/10 02:15 PM

~ December Morning After Rain ~
Golden Gate Mountain in Tucson Mountain Park, Tucson, AZ
December rains set in motion everything the desert needs for a spectacular Spring wildflower show.  Nowhere else in these United States have I seen such an expression of joy at the arrival of the rain.  We love when it rains.
The combination of rain on the desert floor, early morning sunshine and cool temperatures in the 50s set the stage for the photo above, on the perimeter of our little community, Tucson Estates II.
Of course, we sometimes (not very often) do get snow if … (25 comments)

tucson mountain park: Sunset's Afterglow at Gates Pass, Tucson, Arizona - 08/28/10 11:21 PM

Gates Pass Road winds through a forest of Giant Saguaro cacti, and joins Tucson with the Avra Valley.
The structure you see in the photo is built of rock, and has a stone picnic table and benches inside.  Drive west on Speedway, and this is where you'll top out going over the pass.
It's part of Tucson Mountain Park, and there's a ramada just below the structure you see here that's Handicapped Accessable.  Should you need it, you'll find a "necessary" at the parking lot.
This is a magical spot at sunset, and you owe it to yourself to come … (13 comments)

tucson mountain park: Tortoise Eye View: Blooming Cactus in Tucson Mountain Park - 08/11/10 12:01 PM

The perspective from which we view the world changes everything!  The circle of brilliant pink flowers caught my eye as I was hiking in Tucson Mountain Park.  Without the flowers, I might not have noticed the cactus.
From six feet up in the air, this little cactus was a pretty insignificant part of my view of the landscape.  Wondering to myself what this would look like from the perspective of the Desert Tortoise, I got down on my hands and knees, and then laid down full length on the ground.
What had been a tiny cactus suddenly became a fortified … (31 comments)

tucson mountain park: Counting Cacti In Saguaro National Park: The Saguaro Census - 03/09/10 07:24 AM

Just like people, Saguaros within the National Park boundaries are subject to a census every 10 years.
Kurt Repanshek, a modern day John Muir, is a freelance journalist who writes about land use issues, especially in the Rocky Mountain West.  His January 7th post for the National Parks Traveler begins like this:
Much as the bison is to Yellowstone National Park, the saguaro cactus is to Saguaro National Park. Tall, spiny, and handsome, the noble saguaro was the impetus behind the creation of Saguaro National Park, and reigns today as that park's icon. With hopes of ensuring it stays that … (16 comments)

tucson mountain park: Tucson, AZ: Tucson Mountain Sanctuary, Full Moon Setting - 08/08/09 07:18 AM

Tucson Mountain Park's entrance is only a mile or so from the community of Tucson Mountain Sanctuary.
I'm up and out at five thirty in the morning, and dawn's breaking in the east.  In the western sky, the full moon is setting over this canyon wall.  The coolness of the desert night is still with us, especially down on the canyon floor, and the sandy wash where I'm walking is easy on the feet.
By noon, the summer temperature will have soared to 103 degrees, but at 5:30 a.m. this might as well be another world -- a magical … (27 comments)

tucson mountain park: Saguaro National Park West: Monsoon Season Sunset - 07/29/09 06:39 AM

Saguaro National Park (west) is one of my favorite haunts, especially during the monsoon season at the end of the day.  Kinney Road cuts through the southern end of park from east to west.  Where it passes through Tucson Mountain Park and Saguaro National Park (west,) there are many parking areas along the roadside.  Tourist and native alike can stop and admire the spectacular landscape.
Bring a camera!
The saguaro forest is very dense in places, and the park has miles of trails.  King Canyon Trail is one of my favorites.  Constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the … (21 comments)

tucson mountain park: Silly Saturday Night Post: Eyes In The Back of Her Head - 07/04/09 11:40 PM

"Grandma," I asked, "How did you know I did that?"
"I've got eyes in the back of my head."
My Grandma said that to me more than half a century ago in her kitchen on the eastern shore of Virginia.  I was trying to snag a cookie.  I'll bet yours said the same to you when you were knee high to a grasshopper.
So when this Western Screech Owl twisted her head around to keep an eye on me, I burst out laughing.  "Hey, Grandma!" I said, as I clicked the shutter.  "You really do have eyes in the back … (18 comments)

tucson mountain park: Take The Camera On a Night Walk? You Bet! - 04/29/09 12:32 AM

I went for a late walk this evening, and strapped the camera case to my belt.  I considered leaving it home.  What, after all, will warrant a photo after 8:00 p.m.?
Flashlight in hand, I walked the 1 1/2 miles from my home to the entrance to the Tucson Mountain Park.  There's a street lamp there, and its orange light was attracting insects.  The insects in turn were attracting Night Hawks, who were feeding on the wing.  It took five or six tries, but finally I captured this photo just for you.  Thanks for stopping by to read my blog.

tucson mountain park: Entrance Gates Make Me Wonder... (1 of 2) - 03/31/09 07:43 AM

...what's on the other side?
When I noticed the FOR SALE sign go up on a remarkable home in our little community of Tucson Estates II, my interest was piqued.   (Finally, I'm going to get to see what's behind that gate!)
I'll tell you what's behind the gate...  next time.
Tucson Mountain Park
Sunday evening, I climbed to a perch 800 feet above the home to get a sense of perspective on its location.
See that little red arrow?  It's hovering over this particular home.  Come right about 200' and the road you see is the park boundry.  The entrance … (28 comments)

tucson mountain park: Tucson Estates II: The Community and the Mountain Views Sold the House! (LOCALISM FEATURED) - 01/05/09 04:34 PM
My new neighbor Jerry was out in his yard, and I was walking by, camera (as always) in hand.
This particular home had been for sale for nearly a year and a half with no takers.
One day I turned the corner and noticed that there was a sold sign.  A couple of months later, a work crew showed up and started construction on a beautiful southwestern courtyard.
As the courtyard wall went up, the home began to be transformed.  A graceful archway entrance was next, and then a flagstone surface, and finally the Mexican fountain.
I introduced myself.  "Wow," I said, "you … (30 comments)

tucson mountain park: Belt and Suspenders: Pima County, AZ Road Signs - 03/26/08 07:26 AM
I had to stop and take a photo.  The irony of this is downright funny!
I doubt that ice has formed on the roadway known in Tucson, AZ as Gates Pass Road, at least not since the Jurassic era.  Maybe not even then.
But there it is.  A sign (not one that folds closed, either) warning you to Watch For Ice.\
But look down there to the right.  See the fire hydrant?  That's the funny part.
Because of the high summer temperatures, kids have been known to crack the hydrant to soak themselves in a cooling spray of water.
Pima County has a sign for that … (15 comments)

tucson mountain park: Local Expert: Gates Pass at Sunset in Tucson, Arizona - 03/26/08 07:07 AM
People from all over the world converge each evening at sunset to watch the lovely approach of night.
Drive west on Speedway, cross under Interstate 10, and within a few short miles you'll be surrounded by a forest of saguaro cacti, the predominant trees of the Arizona-Sonoran Desert.
Wend your way past ancient granite outcroppings, climbing ever higher, and you'll come to the summit named Gates Pass, in the heart of Tucson Mountain Park.
You'll find plenty of parking if you get there half an hour before sunset.  The parking fills up fast in the last half hour.
I've heard German, French, Icelandic, Swedish, … (8 comments)

tucson mountain park: John Wayne and Golden Gate - 07/25/07 07:42 AM
I love John Wayne westerns!  If the movie has a saguaro cactus in it, you can bet the movie was shot at Old Tucson Studios.
Now here's the thing to look for--somewhere in the movie, the camera will pan from the action to the background, and there it is!  Golden Gate Mountain.
Even long time Tucsonans have no idea that the movie studio, which is still active, sits at the foot of a mountain named Golden Gate.
Take a ride on Speedway west toward the Tucson Mountains.  It will be good for your soul.  As you leave the city, the … (16 comments)
