Hurrican Irene Update from the Real Estate Board of New York

The current forecast is that Hurricane Irene will reach the New York metropolitan area as a Category One storm. The ground speed of the storm has accelerated; gale forces winds of 40 miles per hour will reach New York City by 9 pm Saturday. The severe weather is expected to last between 12 and 18 hours. As Hurricane Irene continues on its path, the impact on New York City becomes more clear and additional information and precautions are being advised.

A hurricane watch is in effect for New York City indicating hurricane conditions are possible within 48 hours.  Irene is currently a Category 3 hurricane and is expected to reach the North Carolina coast on Saturday. Irene is the strongest Atlantic storm to threaten the U.S. since 2005.
All residents are advised to take the following steps to prepare themselves and their residences.

From Penn Station to Moynihan Station - 08/21/11 02:43 PM

The original Pennsylvania Station, opened in 1910, was designed by the famed McKim, Mead & White architecture firm. The station's steel and glass concourse pictured below, with its great domed roof, suggests the motion and power of the modern age.

Although a Beaux-Arts architectural masterpiece built of marble to last forever the railroad sold the air rights above the Penn Station. The building was demolished in 1960 and replaced by an office tower and new Madison Square Garden. The new Penn Station would be undergound below Madison Square Garden.

It's been an interesting week. The stock market has been volatile. There is national economic and political uncertainty. New York City rental rates are near record highs. Mortgage rates are near record lows. That’s a good mix for buying property. There is also a lack of inventory in Manhattan.

The founder of a Website "For Sale By Owner" hired a broker for 6% to sell his Chelsea Apartment. The "Do it Yourself" Guru couldn't do it himself. Preaching is always easier than practicing.
The Wall Street Journal reported Colby Sambrotto, a founder of the website ForSaleByOwner.com, a website that charges fees to home owners to sell their own homes themselves couldn't sell his own home himself.
Colby Sambrotto had an apartment of his own—a two bedroom in Chelsea—to sell. He couldn't sell it by himself. He spent six months trying to sell his condominium himself through online listings and classified ads.
