WEPS (West End Preservation Society) announced a newly proposed area designation as defined by the Landmarks Preservation Commission on September 15, 2010. WEPA has been trying for years to designate West End Avenue a historic landmark district. Through efforts of saving landmark buildings from the wrecking ball and campaigning for a West End Avenue historic district an even larger area is being proposed and considered.

The Upper West Side extends north from 72nd Street up to 96th Street and is bordered by Central Park West and Riverside Park. There are two #2 and #3 express subway stops on the Upper West Side at 72nd Street and 96th Street on Broadway. Both station head houses have have been recently renovated. The 96th Street station  has a futuristic looking glass dome. The new station opened but is expected to be completed next year. Both stations are located in the Broadway median. The 8th Avenue subway B & C trains run along Central Park West.

Construction at 535 West End Avenue at 86th Street                                           Artist rendering of 535 West End Avenue Preservation group Landmark West is calling on the Landmarks Preservation Commission to designate a new historic district on the Upper West Side, including all of West End Avenue between 70th and 107th streets, the New York Times reported.
Landmark West said developers have been seizing individual row houses along the avenue, demolishing them and replacing them with glass apartment buildings.
