local news: Pay as you can at "The Savory Spoon" restaurant ~ Redding CA - 01/30/12 09:18 PM
It's hip, it's delicious and it's different!

When was the last time you ate at a restaurant and was told to "pay as you can"? For me, never.
Until I visited The Savory Spoon that is.
Ann Webber, owner of The Savory Spoon believes in giving back to the community, so she establishes "Community Day Mondays" offering patrons their choice of any item from their limited community day menu (I must say it's far from limited, it's a generous list) and pay as they are able...how's that for having a big heart for the community and how timely!
The Savory Spoon, one of Redding's … (1 comments)

I read with great interest today about the federal funds that our County will be the receipient of as part of the country's economic stimulus package. The goal with these funds is to provide us with assistance in reducing wildfire danger, and if you live in the Northstate you know about the wildfires we've had in recent years! The Shasta-Trinity National forest will be receiving $1 million for fuels reduction projects, as reported by the local newspaper (The Record Searchligh).  According to Sharon Heywood, Shasta-Trinity Forest Supervisor, she's happy with this decision and agrees that this money will provide jobs for the California Conservation Corps and area … (0 comments)

An idea has been brewing for quite some time in the mind of Valerie Ing-Miller of Jefferson Public Radio, she's teamed up with the Cascade Theatre to create a "Dinner and a Movie Night" for every Wednesday in January. The idea here is that people would get out and have fun while putting our beautiful Cascade Theater to use during the week.  The twist? Cooking demonstration on stage at the end of the show! This piece hosted by Doni Greenberg of Food for Thought: A News Cafe!
Each week a food-themed movie will be featured providing the audience a "taste" of the actual movie … (7 comments)

local news: Mt. Shasta Glaciers actually growing - 08/23/08 10:31 PM
One of our clients sent us an article that was truly fascinating. It has to do with global warming and our very own Mt. Shasta. First of all, if you don't know about much about Mt. Shasta it rises over 14,100 ft. above sea level.  Mt. Shasta (located just over 250 miles North of San Francisco) is the second highest volcano in the U.S. and the fifth highest peak in California.
We've known that global warming is shrinking glaciers in several areas such as the Sierra Nevada, the Rocky Mountains and other areas in the Cascades. But for Mt. Shasta, scientist have identified its glaciers to be the only ones in … (3 comments)

local news: Redding CA Local News - 08/20/08 01:58 PM
Look for these daily newsbrief right here on Blogging About Redding:
•  Houses in Redding are becoming more and more affordable.  This is due in part to the high number of foreclosed properties and those in a short-sale (or pre-foreclosure) status.  Last summer the housing affordability in Redding was about 23%, this summer the affordability index rose to 36%.  This is more in line on what we call a "healthy real estate market".  Our local people should be able to afford buying instead of renting.

•  The opening of Trader Joesin Redding CA has been pushed back to 2009. We were anticipating … (0 comments)

local news: What to do when the air quality is almost at "hazardous levels" - 07/26/08 11:42 AM
We read in the newspaper yesterday that the air quality here in Redding is "very unhealthy".  Apparently, the Air Quality Index almost reached hazardous levels, 265 points when any reading above 151 is bad.  Officials advice people with respiratory or heart disease, to avoid all outdoor activity (especially the elderly and children).  For those who like to jog, bike ride or do any outdoor activity, it is probably best you limit your time outdoors.
We noticed the air inside our house was pretty bad when we accidentally left the garage door open for about 10 minutes.
With that said, this … (6 comments)

local news: Local Market Conditions & Local News - 05/22/08 02:16 PM
Local Market Conditions
A return to "affordability" May 2008:
Finally, people can afford to buy a home again! With prices falling in many parts of the country and the number of foreclosures rising, a small yet growing number of bargain-hunting buyers are seeing an upside to the real estate market. From first time home buyers who were priced out of the market between 2001-2005- to investors, and now international buyers.  The decline in the value of the dollar against other currencies and lower prices translate into a discount of up to 30 percent for some foreign buyers.  Many say this could … (0 comments)

local news: Support Our Local Businesses - 04/17/08 11:16 PM
Bridge Bucks Campaign...supporting our community!
It's a headache getting anywhere close to the Cypress Bridge. This is about the only area I try to avoid between the hours of 8am-10am and 4pm-6pm.  But rather than complaining about the traffic and congestion, we need to remember that in the long run this will be a GREAT thing for our city. We will all benefit from this expansion and will be glad once it's over. In the meantime, we can't forget about the local business that are affected by the Cypress Bridge Construction. Our patronage and support is now more than ever necessary.

Once July hits, the activity slows down some. For home owners planning to sell, the spring is the most recommended time to sell by many of us in … (0 comments)

local news: Mortgage Crisis...Republican's or Democrat's fault? - 09/27/07 06:55 PM
Another local mortgage office closed its doors today. The story reads -
National City Mortgage closed its office on Churn Creek Road on Wednesday, branch Manager Lynda Eaton said. National City, which has five employees in Redding, had done business at that location for nine years.
The story continues but what's interesting is the public's response to this article. Naturally, people are always looking to see who to blame.  I got a kick out of some of these comments - how did it turn into a Republican vs. Democrat issue? Ha.
The Democrat said: "Well everyone should have known that Republican leaders always throw … (3 comments)

local news: Trader Joe's ~ Front Page News! - 07/20/07 12:28 PM
Yesterday morning I get a call from a friend who asked "have you seen the paper this morning?" - I'm thinking "oh gosh, maybe I've made the headlines - for who knows what" well that wasn't it.  It turns out, our lovely town is getting a TRADER JOE's and the buzz around here is "FINALLY!", " Yippee!!!!!"OH YEA!" and "Two Buck Chuck, baby!" If you have a Trader Joe's in your area (or several), you know what we're talking about.
