I have had a lot of critters in my life--horses, dogs, cats, gerbils, goats, fish (I still miss my big pleco) and, working as an emergency rescue and shelter person and dog trainer, am not easily afraid of them.  But, I beg my client sellers to make sure animals at their property are securely kept away during showings.  Now, if there's a herd of 60 Holsteins, the fence will have to do, but cats, likely to bolt the open door and dogs, who may terrify the folks who aren't used to them and may take umbrage at strangers coming in without the family being there, should be crated or penned for the duration--or, in the case of dogs, great excuse for a walk for all of you.  I have had little dogs, guaranteed to be "no problem" cling tightly to my shoe or pants leg guarding their domain.  Your clients need to know that the liability in case of scratch or bite will be all theirs.  And do have them pick up the "land mines" or scoop the litter box.  One can have many critters AND a clean fresh-smelling home.
