Los Angeles County Water Shortage

As I was watching the news this morning, I had some thoughts that created some concerns. The residents of Los Angeles County will only be able to turn on their sprinklers before 9:00 A.M. and after 4:00 P.M. on Mondays and Thursdays beginning June 1, 2009. We are currently experiencing a spring heat wave, what will our summer be like?

Imagine our local golf courses, you will no longer be hitting your ball on "the green" anymore. We have had our share of wild fires in L.A.  What will be the penalty for using the water? What about our local crops and our plants if we go through a heat wave? How long will this new ordinance stay in effect?

We have witnessed several brown lawns this year. It is depressing. The cities of Palmdale and Lancaster have bought several of these forclosed homes and are creating a desertscape motif  to help solve the problem. It has made a big difference in the appearance of these homes and our community.

As a whole, if we all cut down our water usage by 15%, I believe we could make a huge difference.  Artificial turf is becoming popular these days. It's durable, very manicured and clean. I have seen it, and looks better than most lawns. We all need to take action to save our county from what I believe could be a devastating disaster. Please send us your ideas and suggestions. We would love to hear your thoughts!

Let's all work together to conserve our water. Please view some of these water conservation tip sites:

Quartz Hill was settled in the 1880's. Three families, the Lanes, the Goddes and the Stratmans, were responsible for the settlement of the area. It was first known as Belleview, but the name was changed later to Quartz Hill.

Quartz Hill is known for its small town atmosphere and friendly people. This small community of 10,000 residents derives its name from a small hill located within the town. This hill contains a considerable amount of silicone dioxide, or quartz, which gives Quartz Hill its name. Quartz Hill is located in the High Desert of California north of the Los Angeles area.

As recently as the 1970's the town was largely agricultural, with cash crops of almonds, alfalfa, and turkeys. The almond orchards crippled by disease and the alfalfa growers having to contend with their water rights being diverted (to a growing Los Angeles) caused a significant shift in the local work force. Mainly the shift was toward the nearby aerospace plants of Lockheed Martin and Rockwell International. Their fields long empty Quartz Hill still celebrates an Almond Blossom and Alfalfa Festival every year.

This community offers its residents many advantages. Large and semi-custom homes are established on half to full acre hillside lots in order to fully capture the beautiful views of the valley. Another added feature of the community applies to the zoning ordinances which allows for the maintenance of horses on the property. This advantage to the land merely adds to the character of the community.

Quartz Hill provides quality in location and leisure activity for all of its residents. Through the advantages in the land, this community has a lot to offer.

Quartz Hill schools include Quartz Hill Elementary School, Sundown Elementary, Joe Walker Middle School Parts of the unincorparted city of Quartz Hill go to Del Sur a school in Antelope Acres, and Quartz Hill High School

On 6/21/07, RVHOA board members met with the developer of the commercial plots on Rancho Vista Blvd. and Towncenter. We have lots of news for you besides the actual site plans of what is going in.

First, let's start with the first picture. If you look at the large building going in on the upper left, that will be a grocery store. Wells Fargo has also indicated an interest in one of the small "outbuildings" that you see.

When you look at the large building on the upper right, this will be a three story medical building. It will conform to building height restrictions and will have landscaping in the back to shield it from the homes behind it. The building has also deliberately been put at an angle to protect adjacent homeowners. The other large building in the upper right will be a large drug store.

The center on the bottom will be anchored by a Starbuck's drive-through with an outdoor eating area. You can see a closeup of this center by clicking on the second picture. You will be able to more clearly see the covered area for outdoor dining.

    West Palmdale

West Palmdale is a high desert suburb in Los Angeles County located in the Antelope Valley. West Palmdale has communties such as Rancho Vista and Ana Verde. Palmdale was the first community within the Antelope Valley to incorporate as a city (on August 24, 1962), Palmdale is separated from Los Angeles by the San Gabriel Mountain range. Here is a little interesting history about Palmdale. Palmenthal, (Palmenthal is German for Palms Valley.) the first European settlement within the limits of Palmdale, was established as a village in 1886 by westward travelers from the American Midwest, mostly of German and Swiss descent. According to area folklore, the travelers had been told they would know they were close to the ocean when they saw palm trees. Never actually having seen palm trees before, they mistook the local Joshua trees for palms and so named their settlement after them.

Rancho Vista has much to offer including 2 golf courses. Rancho Vista Golf Course. A gorgeous 18 hole golf course, full range of public facilities including a 10,000 square foot clubhouse, Cascades Restaurant and complete pro shop, banquet facilities available for weddings, parties and special occasions. www.ranchovista.com

It's easy to know where to shop in Palmdale, California: just head for the Antelope Valley Mall! The A.V. mall took on a $23 million renovation. The main indoor mall currently has about 140 stores. It presently has 5 anchor stores. A seventh, Robinsons-May, was planned but did not surface as that chain's parent company was bought out by Macy's. The other anchor stores are JC Penney, Sears, Gottschalks.  Just outside the mall is Restaurant Row, which includes Chili's, Red Lobster, Olive Garden, Outback Steakhouse, El Torito, Johnny Carino's, Dave's Famous BBQ, On the Border Mexican Grill and BJ's Brewery. Outside the mall  you will find the newly designed Cinemark Theatres.
