Even in the face of multi month highs in the stock market, bonds are holding their own.  Yesterday's 200+ stock market gain should have resulted in bonds going down and rates going up, instead bonds rose nicely yesterday with apparent gains again this morning.

Personal Spending and Personal Income both fell again not only below analyst expectations but below the previous quarter.  The monthly comparison in index format as well as for annual comparisons both came in even. "Economy Falls More Than Expected" - You have got to be kidding.  Last quarter the GDP fell 6.1%, not nearly as bad as the previous quarter but "worse than analyst expectations".  Considering the economy might be bottoming out and possibly even coming a bit out of the doldrums, the bit of news is just bad reporting.

Don't you love the way the news media explains why the stock market is opening lower - ripped from the pages of CNN - "Flu weighs on Wall Street".  Maybe - perhaps more it's GM laying off 23,000 workers or economists still don't think we are at bottom yet.  Either way, stocks are going to be off this morning and bonds are making a … (0 comments)

Jobless claims came in lower than expected as well as lower than last month.  Is this due to jobs being created? hemorrhaging of jobs being stopped? or folk falling off the rolls due to being on them for so long?  In any of these cases - the stock market likes this and the market is rallying, at the expense of the bond market.

How about that? Jobless claims actually came in lower than last month AND lower than analyst expectations.  Is this the start of the turn around?  or just a blip?  Balance of trade was also lower - always a good sign.  Either way bonds are off from yesterday's closing.

With continued fear of how earnings being released for last quarter stocks are taking a continued beating.  This is helping bond prices increase.
Technically speaking - the FNMA 4.0% 30 year bond levels nicely broke through the 25 day moving average yesterday and is now sitting just below the 10 day moving average.  The bond has fallen nicely off overbought levels.
