My bias to restaurants in the Margaret Place and Downtown area is not a secret. However, I do venture out, especially when one of my favorite clients come to town.  Such was the case today for lunch.

We were greeted at an open door by none other than Nick Hunter, the ever competent owner of The Harlequin. Nick has an absolute knack for making customers feel welcome.  Combine this friendly and welcoming atmosphere with a menu that delivers tremendous quality and you'll quickly discover why The Harlequin is one of the most popular restaurants in Southwest Louisiana.

I'm also aware that The Harlequin has agreed to purchase vegetables from the new Garden of Hope, an effort by the Potter's House. Of course, this is only one of many community projects endorsed by The Harlequin.

Great food, great service, and a civic minded owner! Doesn't get much better than Nick Hunter and The Harlequin Restaurant.

A NAR Benevolent Foundation is proposed, but needs our help to see it become a reality.  Please read this post and take action so that we REALTORS can truly do our part to take care of each other by relieving some of the pain and suffering caused by tragedies described in this post.

Via Joeann Fossland, Master Certified Coach (Advantage Solutions Group):

Never doubt that a small group of committed people can change the world.

Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” -Margaret Mead

Think about this....

"Coma…a medically induced coma…  Pat was in a coma… Put yourself in Pat’s Place… You are Pat.

You fall.  You are paralyzed, lying on the floor all night  until being found by your neighbor’s son who has come to walk your Labrador Retriever.

At the hospital, a coma is medically induced.  The coma continues for over a month.  It is impossible for  you to do anything…  make decisions, conduct business, pay bills and perform daily functions.  Your creditors, unfortunately, want their money even while you are in a coma and require long time recovery.

You fell in March, 2009, your paralysis, painful rehabilitation, living in assisted living and surgery continue until the writing of Pat’s Story in September, 2010….19 months….and will continue."

Read the rest of this story at www.ForPatsSake.com

What would you do? Do you have the means or resources to take care of yourself if something were to happen?

Pat's friends want to create an NAR Benevolent Foundation that would relieve some of the pain and suffering of tragedies that all Pats endure. You never know when you could be a Pat.  Think about it.
REALTORS® are compassionate, generous and caring. As a group we have donated over $20,000,000 to others through The REALTORS® Relief Foundation that was established after 9/11. The Relief Foundation is a wonderful and powerful humanitarian relief fund of which we can all be proud, but it is not designed to support the REALTOR® member.  It is designed to support persons outside of the REALTOR® family who experience disaster.  It is for outreach-for others; not in-reach for the REALTOR® family in trouble.

Your help is needed. The folks working on this need 100,000 signatures before the NAR Convention.

Let's extend that care and those humanitarian efforts by closing the circle of compassion and expending some funds for fellow members of the REALTOR Family…who have experienced their own personal Katrina’s, 9/11’s, Haiti’s.

That is why we need an NAR Benevolent Foundation…. join the Campaign… SIGN THE PETITION NOW

Here are a few other ways to help as well:

  • Print the flyer on the site and share with others or post in your office.
  • Share on your social media sites: Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn
  • "Like" the Facebook Page (http://www.facebook.com/pages/For-Pats-Sake/112513308810231 ) and then click the share button.

Monday is not a regular night for me to visit my favorite dining establishment, DeAngelos.  After meeting the new bartender, Jacob Trevino, that may change.

Jacob Trevino at DeAngelos

First of all, let me say that I adore each and every one of the current bartenders who cater so well to the regulars as well as those new to one of the finest restaurants in Lake Charles.

So, why blog about Jacob?  Like his counterparts, he is friendly and at ease with the customers.  The difference is... Jacob is entertaining.  He's one of those who can juggle (literally) the bottles and conduct  other theatrics to delight his clientele without skipping a service-beat.

Tonight, Jacob enthusiastically suggested I consider one of his "100 drinks you must drink before you die" offerings. I can't remember the name of the concoction, but I do remember it has 19 different ingredients! To his credit, once Jacob understood that I was  going easy on the booze in my weight-loss effort, he quickly moved on to my next choice and helped me with my decision as to which red wine I would enjoy with my meal.

So, local friends, fellow Margaret Place fans of DeAngelos and/or those who may visit Lake Charles.  Feel free to join me next Monday to watch Jacob at work at DeAngelos!

Tish Lloyd is a broker in Wrightsville Beach, NC and one of my favorite bloggers.  This morning, she has issued a challenge that is worth noting/taking.

Her "Charity begins at home" message is one most of us adopt, but it begs the question...can we do more?

Of course we can.  Some of our giving/doing is private, but the nature of some programs is that we need to help spread the word.

I'm going to take her challenge and will write a separate blog about a few of the organizations in the Lake Charles area that I respect and support.

Via Tish Lloyd Real Estate Agent Wrightsville Beach, NC (Prudential Laney Real Estate 910.547.1446):

I was raised, and raised my children, with the credo "Charity begins at home."  For my family, HOME is not just the 4 walls with an address, where we sleep -- It's our Homeentire community.  Even if they live 20 miles from our house, if they are in our vicinity, they are our neighbors and a part of our "home".  I don't have to know your name, I just have to know that you live in my community; that alone makes you a part of my definition of "home".

Like many communities today, my community of New Hanover County, NC has been hit by the poor economy.  We certainly haven't been hit as hard as some, but we've felt the effects.  More are in need, and fewer are helping.  Many people think they need to do something big to help, and if they aren't in a postion to do that, they do nothing.  But it's all the little things we do that add up.  The little things DO make a difference.

To this end, I am challenging my AR friends to find a way to contribute to their "home" in a way that is meaningful to them.  This could be:canned food

  • Volunteering at the animal shelter or donating food, blankets or toys for the residents
  • Donating canned goods to a local food bank -- how about at your next Broker Open you ask agents to bring a non-perishable food item?
  • Reading to residents of a nursing home (take along some hard candy)
  • Donate blood or host a blood drive through your local REALTOR® Association
  • Donating clothing or toiletries to a homeless shelter
  • Rake up the leaves in your elderly neighbors yard
  • Donate a few school supplies to the school closest to you -- they can always use them!
  • Help clean up a local park or beachBeach clean-up
  • Have your office host a food drive -- the need is great just about everywhere, and your local food pantry will be eternally grateful for the donations!

There are so many ways to do something for your community, you are really only limited by your imagination.  As a local real estate leader you probably already have an idea where the help is most needed in your community.

I'd love to hear about what you've done.  I think it would be great to share with one another how we are able to make a difference in our communities, so I am going to make this a Public Post.  Please leave your comments with a link to your favorite charity or even a blog you wrote about how you are making a difference in your community.  I want the word to get out -- so tell us all about it!  This is one of the charities I am donating my time and $$ to.  I am hoping that together we can encourage a Spirit of Giving in our hearts and "homes", wherever, or whatever you deem them to be.

In my opinion we should all do for others whenever we can because it's the right thing to do and giving of ourselves builds a strong community.  But if you want another reason?  Stronger communities will go a long way in helping our local real estate markets.  Now, can you think of any reason that wouldn't be a good thing?

Let's do what we can, when we can, where we can, because Charity Begins at Home!  Tag, you're it!!!

Having attended last night's well attended opening of Elliot Erwitt: Dog Dogs exhibit at Historic City Hall, I'm thrilled to report that the exhibit exceeded my already-high expectations.

Frankly,I encourage even non-dog lovers to take advantage of the opportunity to enjoy Erwitt's work!  His photos capture canines from many countries and in a wide variety of situations.

You can get a sampling by visiting this website, but there are so many more to see and, of course, they are much better up close and personal.

Besides the Erwitt exhibit, local school children and adults submitted photos of their dogs in a photo contest.  The winners were announced last night and ribbons posted next to the winning entries. The quality and quantity was such that the judges surely had a difficult time.

A ten minute video produced by local students is a third element of the exhibit.  The production shows off dogs from the Calcasieu Animal Shelter.

Those with enough time could also enjoy two other exhibits last night.  The Almost Alice exhibit remains as does the 1910 Historic Fire Exhibit.

The Dog Dogs exhibit at Historic City Hall is open Monday through Friday through Jan 1th, 2011. The hours are 10-5 Monday through Friday and 10-2 on Saturdays.

Most of my colleagues accept the fact that, for the most part, I'm a stay-in-the-office-broker.  I receive the mass mails for agent open houses, but generally only attend those in the Shell Beach Drive and/or Charpentier or Margaret Place areas.

But, when Tony Cornner left me a personal voice mail with an invitation to three open houses yesterday, I knew I would travel to The Providence Subdivision in South Lake Charles.

In his voice mail, Tony enthusiastically described that each house was being staged by a different furniture company and were show-ready. Sadly, staging is not the "norm" in our area, so I wanted to see and support his efforts and the results of furnishings by 505 Imports, Household Furniture, and Howell Furniture.

Tony did everything right. Served a great Casa Manana, lunch complete with deserts, had plenty of help, marketed via personal invitation, e-mails, signage, and news coverage. The amount of work and coordination to make this happen reminds me of the Lucille Ball quote that goes something like, "If you want something done, ask a busy person."

Kudos to all!  The staging was beautiful and I was quite impressed to see artwork by local talent Vicki Singletary.

This issue of Jambalya Magazine provides details and photos of the staging efforts as well as several quotes by Tony.

I arrived early and was as impressed with the initial turnout as I was with the office support exhibited by Tony's fellow CENTURY 21, Mike D. Bono agents. In fact, one of the first people I noticed was fellow broker Mike Bono.  As a member of the Louisiana Real Estate Commission, I suspect Mike is quite busy, but not to busy to take time to personally visit each of the Providence open houses.

I enjoyed meeting some new agents and visiting with several agents that I've known for more years than any of us care to admit.

Members of the public can experience what the real estate community public enjoyed yestereday as all three homes will be open this Sunday from 1-3:00.

Last night around 6:15, three of us from Margaret Place rode our bikes through Downtown Lake Charles, then east on Kirby Street through a portion of the Charpentier District.  Minimal traffic, beautiful historic homes, and a fall evening made for quite an enjoyable and peaceful bike ride with friends.Lake Charles Farmers Market Logo

Our destination? The Cash and Carry Farmer's Market on the corner of Enterprise Blvd and Broad Street. A 4th friend, forced to drive due to a broken arm, was to meet us in order to utilize her car for that which could not fit in our baskets.

Turns out, we missed the memo about the change in hours for Tuesday's Farmer's Market. Once we were alerted by our advance "driver" that the hours, effective yesterday, are now 4-6:00 PM, we modified our route to enjoy even more of the Charpentier district.

We took a break and stopped for a salad and tea on the Patio at Luna's on Ryan. Then, back to Margaret Place.

No fresh produce, but some exercise and time with friends. Two out of three's not bad!

Hopefully, next Tuesday will include all three.

A few weeks ago, I wrote a blog with the intent of showcasing the locational advantages of Lake Charles.  In that post, I mentioned a day trip to Houston made with a friend to attend a panel discussion and an exhibit of art contained in the new book, BEFORE DURING AFTER: Louisiana Photographers' Visual Reactions to Hurricane Katrina.

As I had not sought permission, no photos were included in that first post. Evidently a few readers inquired and/or ordered the book based on the link I provided.

The publicist for the book found the post and notified author Elizabeth Kleinfeld.

Elizabeth remembered me from that day trip to Diverse Works in Houston and thanked me for the plug via Active Rain's e-mail. system.

I responded with an invitation for her to send me photos from BEFORE DURING AFTER along with permission to post them here.

The first set of photos are three of Elizabeth Kleinfeld's submissions.

The second set are those featured in the book from photographer Rowan Metzner.

I was unable to attend the installation of the state association's leadership for 2011, but want to take this opportunity to recognize Lake Charles REALTOR and fellow Active Rainer, Derenda Grubb.

Derenda receiving a copy of a proclamaton by the City of Lake CharlesDerenda was installed last week as the PRESIDENT of our state association, Louisiana REALTORS.

Very few from Lake Charles have served as President of the state association so a huge CONGRATULATIONS and THANKS to Derenda for this significant accomplishment AND commitment.

See photos of Derenda on swlar.org as well as other Lake Charles REALTORS in attendance at banquet which was held at the beautiful Camelot Club in Baton Rouge.
