louisiana: Photos from BEFORE DURING AFTER: Louisiana Photographers' Visual Reactions to Hurricane Katrina. - 09/27/10 12:13 PM
A few weeks ago, I wrote a blog with the intent of showcasing the locational advantages of Lake Charles. In that post, I mentioned a day trip to Houston made with a friend to attend a panel discussion and an exhibit of art contained in the new book, BEFORE DURING AFTER: Louisiana Photographers' Visual Reactions to Hurricane Katrina. As I had not sought permission, no photos were included in that first post. Evidently a few readers inquired and/or ordered the book based on the link I provided. The publicist for the book found the post and notified author Elizabeth Kleinfeld.

louisiana: 15 Brown Pelicans Released in Cameron Parish - 08/06/10 11:47 AM
Always nice to spread good news. And the release of 15 Brown Pelicans that were saved from the BP oil spill certainly fits the category of "good news." We can only imagine the emotions of those involved to see these Brown Pelicans released to a terrain similar to their former home, Racoon Island. There have been other releases, of course. What is noteworthy is that this is the first in-state release of the Brown Pelican. This is a video of a release in Texas. There are several others available at YouTube.com. Simply Google, "Pelican Release".This video is set to music and discusses

louisiana: Loving Southwest Louisiana....Crabs and Redfish! - 06/22/10 03:06 PM
I've always found that the social aspect of getting together to enjoy a meal of fresh and personally caught Louisana crabs is as good as the crabs themselves. Last night was such an example during an impromptu, eat-em-over-the-sink-cause-we-can moment. My friend George prepared 5 dozen crabs and cleaned some beautiful redfish, all fresh from a catch earlier in the day by a mutual friend. Like life in Southwest Louisina, the fishing and crabbing is fine and no, we do not have oil on our beaches. (That Pesky Proxy Error has surfaced for the 2nd time this week! ") Anyone else getting

The following are some of my favorite Louisiana websites. These are sites I respect and/or visit often and/or recognize have value to those new to Louisiana. The list is in no particular order. Because some have been forgotten or not discovered yet, more sites will be added periodically. louisiana: Kudos to the Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana - 06/06/10 01:01 PM
Yesterday, while spending a few hours volunteering at a beach cleanup in Cameron, the parish to the immediate South of Calcasieu Parish, I was quite impressed with the Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana. (CRCL) In fact, I was so impressed that today I visited their website, officially joined, and registered to receive their e-newsletter. This is not the first time CRCL has spent time in Cameron Parish. In July, 2009, CRCL coordinated the efforts of 80 volunteers in a 3 day Beach Restoration effort that will help to stabilize and capture sand to help control erosion, create wildlife habitat,

louisiana: We can play the blame game, or we can help clean up the oil spill - 05/01/10 09:24 PM
The National Wildlife Federation's home page offers several ways you can help with the oil spill clean up, including volunteering for the cleanup efforts. As of this evening, over 16,000 people "liked" the National Wildlife Federation's Facebook page. The Facebook page also offers links to various causes which are accepting donatons. Something I learned on the Facebook page is that it takes the following to clean just ONE large bird: Up to 4 People 45 minutes 300 gallons of water With over 400 species of fish, birds and wildlife in jeopardy in what the Wildlife Federation indicated may turn out to

louisiana: Check out CABL and the Leadership Louisiana program - 05/22/08 03:03 PM
Four years ago, it was my pleasure to be a part of Leadership Louisiana, a wonderful learning opportunity offered by the Council for a Better Louisiana (CABL). We, the 2004 class, were and remain, of course, the Best Class Ever. (LELA 2004 BCE!) During the sessions that spanned one year, we learned about our state and built relationships that will last forever. We remain in touch, mostly by e-mail. We've even had a few reunions. We have in common a love affair for Louisiana. Just this week, an e-mail blast went out to congratulate fellow classmate Sue Ann Kleinpeter Cox

louisiana: Wonderful new listing in Louisiana - 03/08/08 03:55 PM
We've all listed homes that we are especially proud to market. And, we've all seen homes that have a "wow" factor. 1000 Michael in DeRidder is such a home. The materials, workmanship, thought and design that went into this 2 year old home are such that this is a home of character and integrity. I've posted a few photos here, but invite you to visit 1000Michael.com, a website I have created specifically about the home, the small town of DeRidder, and the "Crossroad" region of Louisiana. If you are looking for a central location to enjoy the fruits of the Sportsman's Paradise, this
