Door County North--a unique video look at the "Tip" of the Door Peninsula.  Door County is a peninsula surrounded by water, with very unique climate (especially this year).  We have tons of businesses that are known nationally and internationally:  Al Johnson's Swedish Restaurant and Butik, The Washington Island Ferry Line, our unique commercial fishing heritage, Bea's Ho-Made Products, Seaquist Orchards, and so much more.  All clustered around the tip of the Door, from Sister Bay north.  This past week, Door County was featured on Wisconsin Public Television, and we've included the video.  It's well worth a look!

gills rock: Door County Commercial Fisheries--a Proud Heritage - 12/06/12 12:11 PM
Commercial fishing and Door County, Wisconsin.  I grew up in the thriving Town of Liberty Grove (population 1900), in a home located between Ellison Bay and Gills Rock (where about 290 of the residents of the Town reside).  Gills Rock is a true commercial fishing village.  As such, I am honored to be a part of Door County’s commercial fishing heritage.  As regulations get more stringent and actual species begin to disappear—first herring, then “lawyers” (burbot), then perch, now chubs, it becomes more and more difficult for the local commercial fisherman to survive.

The Gibraltar Area Schools serve the northern Door County, Wisconsin communities of Baileys Harbor, Egg Harbor, Fish Creek, Ephraim, Sister Bay, and Ellison Bay. The elementary school, middle school, high school, and district offices are located on a common campus in Fish Creek.

gills rock: Celebrations today in Gills Rock, Egg Harbor & Baileys Harbor, WI. - 07/04/12 09:02 AM
Celebrations today in Gills Rock and Baileys Harbor, Wisconsin.  Baileys Harbor parade is just winding down, but food, fun, music, crafts, water, beach and much more still oblige prior to the beautiful fireworks display this evening.
Egg Harbor celebrated last night with spectacular fireworks, but will feature Village activities and a parade at 1:30 today.  Don't miss it!!
Finally, the later afternoon events start in Gills Rock, with music, food, a boat regatta, and fireworks display over the Bay of Green Bay.  Not to be missed either!  http://www.shorelineresort.com for more information.

Woke up this morning and got ready for a busy day.  I would love to hear from some of the ActiveRain members who drive "territories" (an entire County) the way we do what their annual mileage is.  I usually do about 60 miles on a showing day like today.  No snow, so it's fantastic.  And I don't have to fight traffic (except in summer and holiday weekends) the way others may have to.  I've always thought it would be a lot of fun to have a "neighborhood" territory.  Here, we have nearly 300 miles of shore and about 15 towns and villages.  We … (0 comments)
