I find it odd when I get a call from an agent from out of the area asking for showing instructions for a house or property in my area, on San Juan Island--even worse if it's a house or land on a non-ferry serviced island! A string of questions automatically jump to mind:  Have they ever shown acreage? Do they know how to discuss the well situation? Septic possibilities? Find the corners? Real Estate is Local!

I strongly believe that one of the most important aspects of my job and my title as a REALTOR, is to give my client the best representation possible. I do not belive this can be accomplished by representig them in an area in which I am not familiar. Why do so many agents shy away from referring a client to a more qualified agent? Yes, I get it, it's money. But I don't agree with it.

I think referring is a great way to take care of a client. I am always looking for good agents to help my clients in other markets. Any thoughts?
