Kindergarten Memories - 08/31/11 08:41 PM
The start of a new school year brings back many memories.  I remember my kindergarten "Dad's day" when your father visits your class room and you get to show off all of your artwork and other stuff you have been working on.  One of the projects we were given was to draw a picture of our Dad which would also show what he did for a living.

All of the Dads went around the room and had to pick out their picture made by their little darlings.  My Dad was the last one to pick out a picture, and the … (2 comments)

I just got back from a 3 day weekend at Hamilton Cove in Catalina and I am amazed by the number of my friends who have never stayed on Catalina.  My husband has been going to Catalina for 40 years and used to do a lot of scuba diving, and he and I have been going for weekend get aways for many years as well.  We especially like to stay at Hamilton Cove which feels like you are on a Greek Island.

RPV Dog Beach below Trump National Golf Course - 08/29/11 05:07 PM
Last week,  the Los Angeles Times published the following article on the proposed dog beach below Trump National golf course that quoted my husband Bruce who has been leading the effort to establish a dog park on the Palos Verdes Peninsula:
By Tony Barboza, Los Angeles Times
August 25, 2011
The Los Angeles County coastline stretches 75 miles, but only a few blocks are for the dogs. With a three-acre "dog zone" in Long Beach the only place where canines can legally run off-leash, many local dog lovers drive outside the county to take their pets for a romp on the sand. … (1 comments)

Support your local Lunada Bay Plaza Merchants !!! - 08/29/11 04:57 PM

With the recent closing of the Lunada Bay Market,  it just underscores how important it is that we Lunada Bay residents support our local businesses.  For me, I think it is particularly important for us to support Larry and the Lunada Bay Hardware store.  Larry told me the other day that it has been very slow.  I think it would be just a tragedy if the hardware store closed down.  I know that I would dread having to drive down to Home Depot, Loews, etc. to fix a sprinkler or to get some plant food.

Staging Your Home - 08/23/11 11:28 PM
Staging your home to sell is one of the most important things that you can do to effectively market your home for sale. Staging is simply the process of putting the "best foot forward" in presenting your property for sale.

Dining Room before

Dining Room after new paint and removing outdated draperies and staging

Where did the Peacocks in Palos Verdes come from? - 08/23/11 11:15 PM
Mr. Frank Vanderlip Sr. was an enthusiastic bird lover, maintaining an extensive collection of exotic birds in an aviary below his home in the Portuguese Bend area of Rancho Palos Verdes, The Cottage built in 1916.  He even had a small structure built as a bird hospital and had a resident bird doctor.   The origin of the peacocks that inhabit the Palos Verdes Peninsula is somewhat disputed.  Frank Vanderlip Jr. , in an interview, stated that the peacocks were a gift from Lucky Baldwin, a prominant investor and businessman and a friend of Frank Vanderlip Sr. around 1924. In this version, … (0 comments)

The following is an excerpt from my website regarding secrets and little know facts about the Palos Verdes Peninsula (see http://maureenmegowan.com/PageManager/Default.aspx/PageID=1824011&NF=1 ): "A section of 1,000 acres was originally set aside by the planners of the Palos Verdes Project for a University campus, which ultimately was proposed, in 1925, for the new southern branch of the University of California, which later became UCLA. This land was in the center of the Palos Verdes Peninsula where Peninsula High School, the Peninsula Shopping Center, and the Avenue of the Peninsula Shopping Center is located. History of the Palos Verdes Landfill Site - 08/23/11 10:59 PM
Before the former Palos Verdes Landfill was created, and before the construction of the Botanical Gardens and Ernie Howlett Park in Rolling Hills Estates,  the land under these areas was a large open pit mine.
During the early 1900's the Dicalite Company began mining diatomaceous earth in the area now occupied by the South Coasrt Botanical Gardens off of Crenshaw Blvd, the former Palos Verdes Landfill site between Hawthorne and Crenshaw, and Ernie Howlett Park off of Hawthorne Blvd, , but at this time it was mostly surface mining. By 1929, open-pit mining was being pursued. In 1944 the mine was … (0 comments)

The Vanderlip Estate is Not Haunted - 08/23/11 10:55 PM
Despite persistent rumors that the Vanderlip estate is haunted., there is absolutely nothing factual about these rumors. The home was built by Frank Vanderlip Sr., the original developer of the Palos Verdes Peninsula who, with an investment group, purchased the entire Palos Verdes Peninsula in 1913.  Two completely untrue stories have circulated on the internet that the wife of Frank Vanderlip went crazy there, or that a daughter of Frank Vanderlip had an illicit  affair and was put into an insane asylum across the street. These stories are ridiculous but the stories still appear on several websites devoted to haunted places. Mr. Vanderlip built … (0 comments)

Rancho Palos Verdes History - What really happened when they closed Marineland? - 08/23/11 10:49 PM
When Marineland closed in December1986,Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, which owned Sea World in San Diego, purchased Marineland, ostensibly to continue to operate it. Their intent, however, was to purchase Marineland solely to acquire Corky and Orky, a successful breeding pair of killer whales. Harcourt was in the process of rapidly expanding the Sea World enterprise throughout the nation, and was in desperate need of proven, successful breeding pairs of killer whales in order to supply their new Sea World locations with their headline act, "Shamu, the killer whale".   Orky, the larger male, at Marineland showHarcourt had been denied a permit to capture … (0 comments)

The following is one of a series of history articles I have written for the South Bay Digs Magazine

Portuguese Bend Landmarks

Portuguese Bend Gatehouse:  The Gatehouse at the entrance gate to the Portuguese Bend community was built by Mr. Vanderlip and was modeled after an Italian roadside chapel used by Michelangelo when he painted the Sistine Chapel.  It has one bedroom, two courtyards, one with a rose garden with a fountain and a high ceilinged living room. It is currently occupied and is being beautifully restored by the current owners.

" Sales of existing homes faltered in July, easing to an annualized 4.67 million rate of sale. Mortgage Interest Rate Update - 08/12/11 09:21 PM
Interest rates dropped at the end of the week as investors continued to react negatively to the debt limit increase legislation. The stock market today ended up about 125 points, after alternating days of dramatic swings in the market up and down a minimum of 400 points each day. The extreme volatility in the market caused investors to continue to move money into bonds, thus driving their prices up and yields down. Interest rates moved down by up to 3/8 of a point for many mortgages. Interest rates are quickly approaching historical lows again.
The perceived risk in investing in bonds due to potential increases in … (2 comments)

Adding a Skylight can make a world of difference - 08/10/11 11:19 PM
