FIRST ANNUAL SMOKER'S GIFT TO OUR LOVED ONES FROM "LOVELAND"

On December 3, 2006 we at The Michigan Group lost a member of our family, Vikki Loveland; to lung cancer. Vikki was 53. When she died, three children, eight grandchildren (there's a ninth one coming that she'll never see), and her soul mate of 35 years lost their "anchor". She also left four other "children" that called her "Mom" and twelve other "grandchildren" that called her "Grandma Vikki" behind.

In May of 2007 we named our area at the Brighton, Michigan area Relay For Life "Loveland" in Vikki's memory.

Vikki was a smoker as was her husband. They both quit the day after she was diagnosed. They remained cigarette free for almost four years while she fought her cancer.

In late May of 2006, after two major operations, two separate sessions of chemotherapy, and two separate sessions of radiation treatment; Vikki and her husband knew that it was a matter of time before the battle was over.

Vikki's biggest worry was for her family and their welfare after she was gone. She was always the family "anchor" while her husband was their "rock".

The last six months of her life was spent talking to her husband about what had to be done after she was gone.

During Vikki's final week, she and her husband discussed her fears about her family (and him). She asked him to promise her that he would take care of a number of her worries. Her husband kept every promise he made to her in the days before her death..............except for the one concerning her major worry about him.

In March of 2007, Art started smoking again.

This year on May 16^th, (our local Relay for Life's starting date); Art is going to keep the only promise that he didn't keep to his soul-mate of 35 years while she was on her deathbed.

He is going to donate the money he would have spent for cigarettes (2 packs a day) for the first week he quits to The American Cancer Society. Members of his family are donating smaller amounts as a show of support.

If you smoke.... and have ever thought of quitting.... please join Art in both quitting and raising money for cancer research. Please give the ones that love you a gift from "Loveland" this year. Make the effort to quit smoking and, donate what you can..... up to what smoking would cost you for one week to The American Cancer Society. After one week, keep the money. You've earned it.

I continue to learn something new each day! I am in the process of the writing an offer on a manufactured home and learned that I should ask for an affidavit of affixture. The affidavit is required for mortgages and basically states that the manufactured home is affixed to a permanent structure.

Check out Leasetrader.com I was watching MONEY 911 with Jean Chatzky today and she was chatting about this problem and what a consumer can do. One option is to "sell" your lease and Leasetrader.com does this for a small fee. They hook the car leasee with a qualified car leasor and the lease is actually transferred and the original lease holder is no longer liable for the lease.

Again, I learned something new at a home inspection! Check your hot water heater to see if it has a vacation indicator tab (where the temp gauge is). When you leave for vacation, switch the temp gauge to "vacation." This will save the life of your hot water heater and save you $$$$

This morning I was watching the NBC Morning Show and one of the segments they have a segment called Money 911 moderated by financial guru Jean Chatzky. A viewer wrote in stating that she had tried to get the bank to work with her to put a late mortgage payment on the back end of her mortgage. Over the phone she was told this could be done, but after calling the bank for 4 months unsuccessfully to find out EXACTLY what she needed to do, and getting no response, her home was getting ready for forclosure and her credit had been damaged. The Morning Show moderator was able to help this viewer out, BUT she gave the phone number for other folks to use who are not getting any cooperation from their mortgage lender to call 888-995-HOME.

Prolong The Life Of Your Hot Water Heater

I love real estate! I continue to learn something new every day! I had an inspection on a home Wednesday and learned that to prolong the life of your hot water heater, you should drain it once a year. Your unit needs to be under a year or two to begin doing this if you have never drained the unit before. BUT PLEASE READ your owner's manual on your unit..... By draining the unit yearly (this removes build up of minerals), you can prolong the life by about 10 extra years.

I am not an expert on hot water heaters....I am just passing on info that I learned the other day. So, please be sure to read your owner's manual before draining your unit.

For Those of Us Who Do Not Have Dental Insurance

I am fortunate enough to have health insurance, but I do not have dental insurance. I do get my teeth cleaned twice a year at the LOW LOW price of $25. This includes a thorough exam, x-rays and cleaning. You are probably wondering, where in the heck is the office that I go to for this inexpensive treatment. ... I have been going to Oakland Community College' Dental Hygiene Clinic for the past 5 years. The clinic is at the Highland Campus in Waterford.

You do need to call ahead so that you can get an appointment. Also, since it is a teaching college, your appointment may take a little longer, but I am telling you, your exam will be thorough! A dentist and certified dental hygiene instructor, both review any work done on you.

The current fee schedule is: Adult $25/Senior (over 55) $15/Child $15 (14 years and younger). The pricing is cheaper than going out to dinner.

Ms. Elliott was the 3rd grade teacher who did a study on the blue eye and brown eye discrimination study 20 plus years ago.

New news on the horizon regarding ovarian cancer. According to a team of international researchers, ultrasound exams are better than the tradition blood tests at identifying whether ovarian turmors are benigh or malignant. Holiday in the Park - Opening Festivities December 7th

The "Holiday in the Park" will create magical memories for those who live in our community as we explore and experience our beautiful city park throughout the entire month of December. Opening festivities will take place on Friday, December 7th from 6-9 p.m. with Santa Claus, horse-drawn carriage rides and lots of hot chocolate. The park will be open every Friday, Saturday and Sunday throughout December. Carriage rides will be available at our opening festivities and then only on Sunday's thereafter. Santa will be in his sunroom on the beach from 6:30 - 8 p.m. each evening. We hope you'll make time this season to enjoy the out-of-doors and get into the holiday spirit with us.
