animal welfare: History Mysteries and Happy Birthday Puppies - 01/02/13 08:50 PM
They all have stories that we may never know. Anyone in animal rescue and welfare knows that sometimes the most frustrating part of animal rescue is that the history of the foundling is a mystery. That’s what it was like with Cassidy. Twelve years ago tonight was bitterly cold and snow was beginning to fall. We’d called in the dogs for the night but one continued to bark at something outside the fence. Through the snow in the dark, it looked like our Plott Hound, Pepper. The dog refused to come to his name which was really unusual. Leslie

animal welfare: And...Just Like That, She Was Gone - 11/26/12 04:51 PM
Maybe 12 or 13 years ago, two little beagles were shoved out of a truck and abandoned by some miscreant. The little girl beagle was pregnant...very pregnant. Okay, no problem we thought. Two beautiful beagles should produce beautiful beagle puppies which should be no problem to adopt. Turns out the little girl beagle had obviously had a little affair with someone other than the little boy beagle. Huge puppies with nary a speck of beagle apparent in them. Weave had a limp. X-rays revealed that at some point in her young life she had been shot with a gun and

animal welfare: Say Hello to Gracie...Animal Welfare and Rescue Groups in Western NC - 11/07/12 05:21 AM
It occurred to me the other day as I was photographing our new listing in Sylvan Heights that many of our clients, buyers and sellers, have chosen to share their homes and lives with rescued cats and dogs. Some of their pets were “found” pets but most were deeply intentional decisions to support the good works of local animal welfare/rescue groups. Many others chose to save cats and dogs from their deadly fates by adopting out of a county animal shelter facility. We have so many fine animal rescue groups here in the mountains of Western North Carolina for people

animal welfare: Greenville, SC Zoo...Newborn Giraffe..Just 1.5 hours from Dillsboro,NC - 10/28/12 04:24 PM
Loved this localism post from Sheila Newton in Greenville, SC. Kiko, the baby giraffe must be the cutest giraffe baby in the world. The exciting part for me and for others who live in the Asheville/Waynesville/Sylva area are a very short drive from seeing this miracle. We are such close neighbors in fact that we share the same WLOS news broadcasts...for better or worse. In this case, for better. Thanks Sheila! Via Sheila Newton Team~Anderson & Greenville SC Real Estate/ Foreclosures/Short Sales (RE/MAX Realty Professionals): This past week I was excited to welcome my first granddaughter. I posted a blog with her photo

animal welfare: Animal Welfare Requires Courage of Conviction - 10/25/12 05:58 AM
People have pre-conceived notions of what dedicated souls working in domestic animal welfare are like. There’s no set list of attributes shared by those folks who rescue, care for and try to find home for the dogs and cats who through no fault of their own are homeless, starving or injured. The one trait they DO have in common is that each of these dogs and cats’ lives are precious and we take each one’s welfare to heart. Sheila Anderson posted a thought provoking and heart wrenching paragraph about “Rock” a week or so ago. Since Sheila is not a

animal welfare: Has It Really Been a Year Since... - 10/17/12 04:59 AM
Can it really be a year since those boys came into our lives? It is so hard to believe that a year ago, those two boys wandered onto the deck of Cannon's Corner in Dillsboro. What a sad story. They'd been wandering a month since their human had died. The son who lived with her had drug problems and wasn't taking good care of himself let alone these boys. The evening before the boys wandered onto the deck, the son died of an overdose and the boys were all alone. Thank goodness their human made sure the boys

animal welfare: A Big Mouth Boy - It Isn't Always About Real Estate - 09/28/12 05:37 AM
Real estate is mostly what we do, it's not always who we are and sometimes it isn't what we write about. This morning it's about a Big Mouth Boy named Rambler. Rambler loves, loves, loves to bark and he's great at it. I'll bet he can bark 360 barks per minute...makes us crazy, we don't usually let him get to 20 seconds let alone a full minute. Barking must make him feel good or he might just have a lot to say. He always looks joyful during bark time, tail wagging while he holds court and how often have

animal welfare: The Eyes Have It - Silent Saturday - 09/22/12 05:18 AM
Just like humans, no two dogs are alike. Some dogs have wise old souls from the time they are born. Riddick is like that. He's a thinker. Not much is done impulsively. He studies situations, ponders his options and resolutely makes his decisions. Do you see it too? The eyes have it.

animal welfare: Bear Left on the Road, Daily Walking is Good for the Soul - 08/05/12 06:57 AM
For many years, I walked on our road daily until stumbling in the dark last year on a small rock . The injury took time to heal and changed my morning schedule…AR blogs took precedence. Balance is important for more than just not stumbling on rocks…I loved walking. It kept me centered, focused & in shape. The routine is good for my soul and body. A week ago for whatever reason, I reached for my walking shoes and started up again. All I can say is Ahhhhhh. Our road ranks close to perfect for walking. From a visual perspective, it’s serene

animal welfare: From Cautious to Confidence ~ Charlie and His New Home - 08/03/12 06:22 PM
Charlie has been in his new house with us now since the end of May. As I watched him stretched out to his full glorious length on the floor directly beneath the ceiling fan, I realized just how far he’s come in those couple of months. Charlie used to live in the guest house with his son, Little Monkey. The day came when Little Monkey who had never enjoyed the same robust health as his dad, passed away unexpectedly. Who knows what time of day…he’d seemed fine in the morning when I gave him his breakfast but that evening when

animal welfare: Sometimes It Can Really Wear You Out-sort of Silent Saturday - 07/28/12 06:27 AM
Sometimes a certain behavior by your dog can take as much out of him as it does you. Frosty started licking his feet obsessively and making us stark raving mad. Turned out that he had an allergy…who knows to what and who can afford to go through allergy testing? Dogs apparently react to allergies differently than humans. We are able to have runny noses, watery eyes, sneezing and most importantly can verbalize what’s going on. Not so much with dogs. The allergy runs through the skin of the dog and creates bacterial infections, in Frosty’s case he had yeast in

animal welfare: Disclosure & The Expectation of Privacy ~ For Adults Only ! - 06/20/12 04:59 AM
When REALTORS talk about disclosure and the client’s expectation of privacy, I’m pretty sure these are not the first images that would leap to mind. Yes, this title was a tease and a bit misleading, it really isn’t for adults only ;-D A few weeks ago, one of our local merchants in Dillsboro took responsibility for a Tadpole Sanctuary in a puddle in a parking lot. Adding water so the puddle wouldn’t dry up and with Leslie’s help placed pallets over the puddle to provide additional protection from predators, cars and the sun. Long story short…the neighborhood changed and the

animal welfare: Charlie Seems to Be Relaxed ~ Silent Saturday - 06/16/12 02:24 PM
Well, its been a couple of weeks since Charlie moved into the house. He seems to have relaxed. He's like a little kid though, still doesn't like to be put to bed in his cat condo...a couple of protest meows and then quiet until morning. Ahhhh.

animal welfare: Charlie's Story - Alley Cat, Spay/Neuter on Monday Melodies - 05/29/12 03:04 PM
About ten years ago, Dillsboro was overrun with stray cats. At the time, Leslie and I were active with our own non-profit group, S.M.A.R.T. (Smoky Mountain Animal Resource Team) We raised money to assist people with spaying/neutering of cats and dogs. We’re really proud that through our efforts, several hundred cats and dogs were altered who otherwise might not have been. Statistics have shown that in order for every stray cat and dog to have a home, every human would have to have 7 pets. Spay/neuter is absolutely the only humane way to control stray animal population. I digress, this story

animal welfare: Karen Hawkins, Sheila Newton, Emily Medvec-Fave Pet Project Bloggers - 05/07/12 04:49 AM
Karen Hawkins of Langley, BC, in Canada, Sheila Newton of Anderson, SC and Emily Medvec of Santa Fe, New Mexico are three really good bloggers of localism content and big advocates of animal welfare. They all entered the Pet Project Contest with several really great articles shining a light on their communities and the animal resources available right in their backyards. Karen’s post for people “Moving to Animal Friendly Langley…Fast Facts Faqs” was exactly the sort of posts I was hoping for when I first dreamed up the Pet Project Contest. She beautifully laid out for newcomers to her

animal welfare: And The Winners of the Pet Project Contest Are... - 04/30/12 10:43 PM
Drum Roll Please! The judges and I agree that the Pet Project Contest has been an extraordinary experience. The sense of community and support was overwhelming. We were constantly reminded by participants that they were getting as much out of the contest as they were giving and enjoying getting to know the animal service resources in their own community. The level of concern and commitment for quality animal welfare was just off the charts. Because we all tend to be familiar only with our own backyard, one of the most eye opening elements of this contest was that through localism

animal welfare: What Does the Pet Project Contest Say About Us? - 04/24/12 08:32 PM
The Pet Project Contest judges have been poring over the hundreds of contest entries and are quite impressed with the level of knowledge of, compassion for and commitment to animal rights and welfare issues that the ActiveRain members have exhibited in their writing. Over and over, AR members have expressed enthusiasm for the subject and it shows. What may be as interesting as the posts have been the hundreds of supportive comments made by fellow AR members. The sharing, bonding and networking activity has been a joy to observe. We’ve seen members who’d never “met” other members before this contest and

animal welfare: Nothing Could Have Prepared Me - 04/09/12 10:10 PM
Every once in awhile, ActiveRain members will post about how amazing this community is and I always agree with that opinion. Nothing however, could have prepared me for the open hearted and enthusiastic response we’ve had to the Pet Project Contest so far. We launched the PetProject Group on April 1st and announced the contest on April 2nd. Today is only the 10th of April and we already have 75 Subscribers and over 130 quality localism posts. The wealth of information is nothing short of astounding. Everyone participating has embraced the topic of Animal Welfare with wide open arms. In
