dogs: The Veterinarian Will Make a House Call Tuesday - 10/10/15 10:33 PM
Traditionally, mornings have always been my time to work on this blog.  I honestly love it. Sitting by the huge deck windows, looking out over the morning mountain views and sipping tea or coffee.  When I recently entered back into the ActiveRain community, I wouldn't say it was like riding a bike but it was like moving back into a familiar and favorite neighborhood.  Life takes odd twists all the time though and over the last few weeks I've slipped back into another familiar though not favorite role, that of a canine geriatric and hospice worker.  Mornings are precious and lately … (4 comments)

dogs: I Have a New Girlfriend and She's a Redhead! - 12/08/13 09:42 PM
Yes, that's right. I have a new girlfriend and she is a redhead. She already belongs to someone else though and they've been in a committed relationship for seven years. You know how these things go though, I'll just have to be happy to see her whenever I can! We often luck out with our clients. They usually have more in common with us than not and we end up having a great time while helping them buy their new homes. These buyers live in Roanoke right now and can only look at houses when they can get away from their … (15 comments)

dogs: Who Eases Frustration? - 12/01/13 09:16 PM
What can I say? Today seemed like a real hard rock song and The Who always satisfies for hard rock and I choose "Baba O'Reilly" as carefully as I'd choose the right pain medication to ease an ache. This seems like the friendliest way to vent a little frustration out. I listened to it three times this morning and have things ordered in my brain a little better.
Frustration isn't necessarily anger, usually anger is easier to deal with. We have a dog in kidney failure, one we watched being born.  She was part of an 11 puppy litter from a … (9 comments)

dogs: The Rewards of Stepping Outside Your Comfort Zone! - 11/08/13 08:20 PM
It isn't easy to never give up learning how to do something new. For many, if it doesn't come easily they just don't bother and return to their comfort zones. For me, learning new things is always a little uncomfortable at first but then before I know it, the challenge is so exciting that I forget the discomfort because the goal is so enticing to learn a new skill, meet a new person or accomplish something different.
This little puppy is going to have to live with someone who isn't afraid to try new things because this doglette is not … (16 comments)

dogs: A Familiar Tail at the Vet's Office - 06/29/13 09:56 PM
For anyone with pets, this is a familiar tail tale. The Office Manager of MoonDancer Realty has routine bloodwork done at her vet, The Animal Hospital of Waynesville. She doesn't love the experience. When the vet isn't actually examining her, this is The Office Manager's usual position.         One of the Office Manager's companions, Zoey, also needed to see the vet so we took them both. Somehow I don't think that the Office Manager had to teach Zoey this lookout position.       After the visit to the vet, we ate lunch in the car and then … (9 comments)

dogs: The Canine Conscience...OMG, This is So Funny :-))))) - 06/14/13 10:21 PM
There are people who have dogs and then there are people who consider dogs to be part of their family. All dogs have "tells" and even though their sense of conscience may be a little different from ours, they do have one.   The man who made this video is a genius!   This had me laughing out loud because it is so familiar! How about you, can you tell if one of your dogs is the guilty party?   Have a good weekend.       ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ … (7 comments)

dogs: Most Photogenic Guy at the Dillsboro Easter Hat Parade, Dillsboro, NC - 03/31/13 02:33 AM
Some folks didn't need an Easter Bonnet to be a standout in the Easter Parade in Dillsboro yesterday.  A group of antique car owners always lead off the procession in their classy vintage rides.    Our friend, Marion Jones had his companion "Major" as his co-pilot in his beautiful 1977 green Ford pick up truck.  This truck looked like it could be in a magazine ad for 1977 Ford pick up trucks. Marion told me that everything on the truck was original, including the paint!  While "Major" hasn't been a part of the truck since 1977, he definitely is an original … (7 comments)

dogs: Don't Try to Tell Him He's Challenged...An Amazing Dog - 03/23/13 12:29 PM
Animal behavior can be bewildering, frustrating, amusing and inspiring.  The way dogs and cats deal with illnesses, injuries and infirmities has no correlation at all to the way humans deal with suffering.  Anyone who has a furry companion in their lives knows that their pet can be sick for days before they allow us to see that something is wrong.  Animals who've had limbs amputated get right back to the job of living their day to day lives instead of feeling sorry or inadequate.  They take the hand paw they're dealt and incoporate it into their lives, never missing a … (14 comments)

dogs: It's looking like Spring In Bits and Pieces - 03/10/13 04:46 AM
There are all kinds of ways to tell that Spring is on the way here in Dillsboro, NC.  The sunlight hours last longer, flowers start blooming and the greenery returns to decorate the trees.  Clothing fashions take on lighter colors and accessories like straw hats are designed to match the outfit and reflect the season.       … (13 comments)

dogs: And...Just Like That, She Was Gone - 11/26/12 08:51 AM
Maybe 12 or 13 years ago, two little beagles were shoved out of a truck and abandoned by some miscreant.  The little girl beagle was pregnant...very pregnant.  Okay, no problem we thought.  Two beautiful beagles should produce beautiful beagle puppies which should be no problem to adopt.  Turns out the little girl beagle had obviously had a little affair with someone other than the little boy beagle.  Huge puppies with nary a speck of beagle apparent in them.   Weave had a limp.  X-rays revealed that at some point in her young life she had been shot with a gun and … (21 comments)

dogs: Say Hello to Gracie...Animal Welfare and Rescue Groups in Western NC - 11/06/12 09:21 PM
It occurred to me the other day as I was photographing our new listing in Sylvan Heights that many of our clients, buyers and sellers, have chosen to share their homes and lives with rescued cats and dogs. Some of their pets were “found” pets but most were deeply intentional decisions to support the good works of local animal welfare/rescue groups. Many others chose to save cats and dogs from their deadly fates by adopting out of a county animal shelter facility. We have so many fine animal rescue groups here in the mountains of Western North Carolina for people … (15 comments)

dogs: Has It Really Been a Year Since... - 10/16/12 09:59 PM
Can it really be a year since those boys came into our lives?  It is so hard to believe that a year ago, those two boys wandered onto the deck of Cannon's Corner in Dillsboro.  What a sad story.  They'd been wandering a month since their human had died.  The son who lived with her had drug problems and wasn't taking good care of himself let alone these boys.  The evening before the boys wandered onto the deck, the son died of an overdose and the boys were all alone.     Thank goodness their human made sure the boys … (12 comments)

dogs: A Big Mouth Boy - It Isn't Always About Real Estate - 09/27/12 10:37 PM
Real estate is mostly what we do, it's not always who we are and sometimes it isn't what we write about.  This morning it's about a Big Mouth Boy named Rambler.   Rambler loves, loves, loves to bark and he's great at it.  I'll bet he can bark 360 barks per minute...makes us crazy, we don't usually let him get to 20 seconds let alone a full minute.  Barking must make him feel good or he might just have a lot to say.  He always looks joyful during bark time, tail wagging while he holds court and how often have … (20 comments)

dogs: The Eyes Have It - Silent Saturday - 09/21/12 10:18 PM
Just like humans, no two dogs are alike.  Some dogs have wise old souls from the time they are born.  Riddick is like that.  He's a thinker.  Not much is done impulsively.  He studies situations, ponders his options and resolutely makes his decisions.   Do you see it too?           The eyes have it.     … (26 comments)

dogs: RE-BLOGGING! ~ Buyers Ask - Can I Put Up a Fence for My Dogs? - 06/10/12 08:19 AM
People often make the mistake of not paying attention to reading the Restrictive Covenants before their Due Diligence period is up.  Truth be told, they really need to examine them BEFORE they make the offer.  You never know what might be hidden in there.  Toni points out a really important issue of fences for our beloved dogs but there could also be restrictions against parking your boat, an RV or allowing guests to stay longer than a weekend, etc.
With pleasure, I re-blog this important post!

dogs: Riders & Readers at the Friends of the Library Bookstore-Wordless Wed - 05/16/12 12:21 PM
A favorite past-time of my family is to visit used bookstores. My mother loves to go to Franklin, NC when she visits here because of the Macon County Friends of the Library Used Bookstore. It’s located in the Shops of Riverwalk on the road to Highlands.
Every penny earned from the bookstore is contributed to Macon County’s Public Library. The books are mostly 50 cents and one dollar. How can you go wrong? The books are all organized just like in a library, so they’re incredibly easy to browse. Guess what? If you make it easy to browse the books … (20 comments)

dogs: Copenhagen in Montgomery-Hounding the RiverWalk - 05/14/12 10:22 PM
Actually, I did get some photos of the historic Riverwalk in Montgomery, AL and I will be sharing them eventually but in the meantime…meet Copenhagen. Mom and I first saw Copenhagen in downtown Montgomery along with his owner Matt. Matt is a soldier stationed somewhere around Montgomery for special training. He adopted Copenhagen from the animal shelter about 8 months ago. Copenhagen has the most polished manners I’ve ever seen in a hound dog. He’s sweet and personable. Matt had Copenhagen down on the Riverwalk to continue socializing him. He seems pretty comfortable to me and there were hundreds of … (19 comments)

dogs: And The Winners of the Pet Project Contest Are... - 04/30/12 03:43 PM

Drum Roll Please! The judges and I agree that the Pet Project Contest has been an extraordinary experience. The sense of community and support was overwhelming. We were constantly reminded by participants that they were getting as much out of the contest as they were giving and enjoying getting to know the animal service resources in their own community. The level of concern and commitment for quality animal welfare was just off the charts.
Because we all tend to be familiar only with our own backyard, one of the most eye opening elements of this contest was that through localism … (51 comments)

dogs: What Does the Pet Project Contest Say About Us? - 04/24/12 01:32 PM
The Pet Project Contest judges have been poring over the hundreds of contest entries and are quite impressed with the level of knowledge of, compassion for and commitment to animal rights and welfare issues that the ActiveRain members have exhibited in their writing.
Over and over, AR members have expressed enthusiasm for the subject and it shows. What may be as interesting as the posts have been the hundreds of supportive comments made by fellow AR members. The sharing, bonding and networking activity has been a joy to observe. We’ve seen members who’d never “met” other members before this contest and … (17 comments)

dogs: Deadline Tomorrow, midnight E.S.T., Monday 4/23/12 for Pet Project Contest - 04/22/12 11:50 AM

Yes, please get it right.  The judges and I just wanted to remind you that you have until midnight Eastern Standard Time tomorrow...Monday, April 23rd, to complete your four post entry for the Pet Project Contest.  Remember to provide us with links to each post and put them in the comment section of the I've Completed the Pet Project Contest!! post.   You should all be pleased with yourselves.  Over the last three weeks, the ActiveRain members have added a tremendous amount of good, relevant localism content designed to provide the best information about animal resources in your communities.   While, … (11 comments)
