local yokel weather: One More Song While We Wait for the Surprise in the Weather - 02/18/13 01:17 PM
Nothing like a ballad before heading off to dream land.  The weather forecast just informed us that by morning we will have that most vague of descriptions in weather, the famous "wintery mix" visiting us overnight.  It's always a surprise since it can be anything from nothing to blizzard.  I'm pretty sure that when I was a kid the weather forecast would have been for snow, sleet, rain or something else fairly specific sounding.  Wintery mix might actually be more accurate but just sounds wishy-washy.   Guess we'll find out what it is when we wake up!   … (9 comments)

local yokel weather: He's No Angel...Just a Dude on the Driveway - 01/29/13 01:32 PM
There is nothing more pathetic than watching someone try to create a snow angel without snow.  It's just sad.  This stick dude appeared on the driveway, I guess maybe remembering the quantity of snow we had a couple of years ago.  Back then he was able to make a magnificent snow angel and I think he was just trying to hold onto his former glory.  Given the forecast for the high winds and lots of rain tomorrow here in the mountains of Western North Carolina, glory is the last thing the stick dude should worry about holding onto...he'll be lucky … (18 comments)

local yokel weather: Blinded by the Light - 01/18/13 11:13 AM
What a difference a day makes.  After 5 or 6 days of dreary and rainy days, we felt like we were coming out of a cave entering a day of blue skies and glorious brilliant sunlight today.      When we left for the office, the sun lit up the ice on Rosemount Road.  It looked like a crystal fairyland and we were truly blinded by the light.     ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~   … (14 comments)

local yokel weather: Much Ado About Nothing...Nothing Much Anyway - 01/17/13 09:01 PM
So, in our area the winter weather advisory was much ado about nothing...except a bit of a hassle.  Nothing beats days and days of rain followed by snow and an extreme drop in temperature.  Well, unless you add in blizzard strength gusts of wind which aid in plunging the ambient temperature even colder with the wind chill.  I tried the door handle on the car when I walked the dogs past it this morning and as I suspected...frozen shut.  All that rain water met the 20 something temperature and the end result was a given...there will be no dashing out … (19 comments)

local yokel weather: Our Small (so far) Flood in Dillsboro Really Put Things in Perspective - 01/16/13 10:42 AM
You might recall this idyllic scene from a post earlier this year.  This is a portion of Scotts Creek that usually flows gently through the middle of Dillsboro. Nice, huh?           Due to the heavy and extensive rains over the last several days...plus we are predicted to get another 2.67" tonight...Scotts Creek turned into a raging river.  Note how close to the top of the bank the river creek is flowing.  Usually, there is a good 8-10 feet from river creek to the top of the bank.  On the night of the 15th, this river creek … (13 comments)

local yokel weather: We Left the Office Shortly After Midnight...Flooding in Dillsboro, NC - 01/15/13 09:40 PM
It certainly feels like we've gotten the biblical amount of 40 days and 40 nights worth of rain.  If I knew what a cubit was, we'd start drafting plans for an ark!  It really hasn't been 40 days and nights but it has been 4 days or better of non-stop rain.  Some of it, like what I'm looking at right now as I look over the yard has been extremely heavy.   We called our friends at The Golden Carp in Dillsboro to get an idea of how Scotts Creek was doing.  Scotts Creek runs right through Dillsboro and joins … (10 comments)

local yokel weather: Jessamine in January at the Dillsboro Farmhouse - 01/11/13 09:07 AM
Unbelievable...we are having a bit of a warm spell here in the mountains of Western North Carolina.  I needed to run up to the farmhouse property this afternoon...we continue to have great interest in this listing.  I couldn't believe it...Jessamine in bloom...IN JANUARY!!!       I won't deny that the little splash of yellow color was a welcome sight.  Not only was the Jessamine in bloom but there was actually a small bee taking advantage of the blossoms.       We're in for a few more days at least of this warmer than normal weather but I'll bet that … (16 comments)

local yokel weather: The Difference Between 19 and 70 - 12/29/12 10:07 PM
Sure, the obvious answer is 51 but that's not where I was headed with this.  Normally, I welcome our winter months as a time of great change and cleansing of the atmosphere.  The cold air is free of pollen and insects, there's no need to be concerned with stepping on snakes accidentally and mountain views are startlingly clear.  This year though, we had the misfortune to catch the flu and this favorite time of year is more of a struggle than normal.           This morning the temperature was 19 degrees and very windy.  We had a … (18 comments)

local yokel weather: Now, That's Cold! - 12/25/12 09:19 PM
A cold front is blowing in to Western NC from this major winter weather system that hit the rest of the country.  It won't be a surprise, we're used to winter during winter months.  Just last week when I went out on the deck to empty and refill the dog bowls, this is what I found.    Now....that's cold!       ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ … (32 comments)

local yokel weather: Dandy Lion in Winter - 12/11/12 09:45 PM
No, not the incredible movie from the 60s with Katherine Hepburn and Peter O'Toole...I'm talking about dandelions in December here in Dillsboro.  The weather finally turned cold a day ago but last week when the Office Manager and I were walking we spied unbelievably several dandelions, both in bloom and with seed puff.  Our friend April was telling us that she was even shooing away gnats!     Can't say that I didn't find the mild weather to be welcome but there's usually a penalty to pay for unseasonable weather....sort of like Henry and Eleanor's stormy relationship.       … (15 comments)

local yokel weather: The Capricious Nature of Mountain Weather-Election Morning Snow Woes - 11/05/12 09:42 PM
Capricious is a word worth loving yet it doesn't come up in conversation often.   Luckily, the funny thing about mountain weather forecasts is that its all local...and capricious!  Usually the weather of outlying areas in the mountains of Western North Carolina bear no similarities to what the WLOS television station out of Asheville is predicting.  If snow had been on the ballot,  as much as I like it I still would have voted against it for today.  Not only is this one of the most important Presidential elections ever, but we've got a closing, it would have been nice to get the tires checked before … (6 comments)

local yokel weather: Was There Snow At Balsam? - 10/30/12 10:46 PM
Living in Balsam, NC comes with a set of responsibilities...sort of.  When we have "winterish" weather here in Jackson County, NC it isn't unusual to get messages on my cell phone similar to "did you get snow at Balsam?".   Don't ask me why there would be a question of snow being "at" Balsam instead of "in" Balsam, you would never hear someone say "snow at Detroit" or "snow at Denver", but here things occur "at" Balsam, Caney Fork, Greens Creek or occasionally things happen "up Caney Fork" or "up Bradley Branch", etc.  The only thing I can think of is … (9 comments)

local yokel weather: Who Determines How Much Is A Lot? ... Wordless Wednesday - 09/04/12 10:05 PM
Working with the camera close up for some reason often reminds me of a short series of books by Mary Norton that I absolutely loved as a child, "The Borrowers".  Everytime I see a tiny rushing of water anywhere, I wonder which leaf or twig the Clock family would utilize to get them to safety in what to them would appear to be raging whitewater.  It's all in someone's perspective.      I ran across this quote by Edwin Arnold which is also about perspective...“A little rain will fill The lily's cup which hardly moists the field.”     The … (17 comments)

local yokel weather: Hot, Hot, Hot, Except for... - 08/09/12 10:22 PM
At the end of July, I worked with a family looking at old farmhouses. The temperatures were hot, hot, hot! Except on the bridge over John Creek in the Caney Fork community of Cullowhee, NC. The shade from the ancient oak trees and the sound of water tumbling over the smooth rocks felt like the reason that the sudden cool breeze occurred.

For about fifteen minutes the weather was delicious and all thoughts of air conditioned controlled environments vanished…you’ve got to love these mountain areas...

local yokel weather: Perfect for Mushrooms - Speechless Sunday - 07/22/12 12:04 PM
This was the first day in a long time with no rain. The frogs are very happy...it's hard to walk on the driveway in the evening without running into one of them.  The peke-a-poo, Zoe, is convinced that they are some sort of squeeze toy.  So far she hasn't been able to get one and she should be glad about that, I'm feeling certain that she wouldn't like the taste.        Obviously, the conditions have been perfect for mushrooms.  I noticed several clusters while I was out mowing the yard.  The pine cone fell from the spruce tree, that's … (14 comments)

local yokel weather: Local Yokel Weather in Jackson County, NC - 10/08/11 02:34 AM

Wouldn’t I love to give you a really impressive and technical post about weather here in the mountains? Well, I can’t but Preston Jacobsen with Local Yokel Weather sure can. What I can tell you is that for most of the years I’ve lived here, weather forecasts in the mountains can be like tuning into a forecast for a totally different state!

Weather forecasts on television are broadcast from Asheville, NC (40 miles away), Greenville, SC (75 miles away) or Knoxville, TN (90 miles away). Pretty often they bear little resemblance whatsoever to the weather we actually do experience … (10 comments)
